Watched 'Focus' last night, some great street scenes/music and one scene in particular sounded great in 7.1, a conversation between two characters in a cool bar beside an F1 track. They had the decency to stop talking when the F1 test cars were driving past, real 'around the room' sound. Not a bad film either.

Sound & Vision magazine gave a nice review to the sound quality in "The Gunman". Anyone here see the movie?

It's difficult for me to get psyched to watch a movie just for the picture and sound quality when the story is generally not liked. "The Gunman" has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 17%.

Easily the best soundtrack I heard in 2015 from Blu-ray was Roger Waters The Wall concert film. The mix is incredible with an absolutely smooth sound and dynamic presentation.

I would be happy to hand off this thread to you or anyone else willing to undertake the effort to keep it updated. I've become so busy with work and family that I hardly have time for my favorite hobby anymore.

Just let me know and I'll send you the Excel file I was using to tabulate votes and rank the films into their appropriate tiers.

Terminator Genesis is a great sounding Atmos BD. Watched it on my 7.2.4 systems and it's one serious ride.Throughout the movie you just feel completely surrounded by all the sounds.

Sully: Dolby TrueHD 5.2 - Tier 0 : There a very few movies that I watch where I appreciate the film as much as the sound and this is one of them. The sound truly adds to the overall experience of this movie. The use of surrounds are great as well as center channel clarity. The bass is very impressive as well!

P.S. - I hope this thread gets going again...was great back in the day

The latest Resident Evil film has an excellent soundtrack, dynamic swings are borderline dangerous, makes the mix of Rouge One rather flat.
If someone resurrects the thread a new immersive category should be added.

It a couple of years old now and I just got around to seeing it and it's not reviewed in this thread. John wick has a great Atmos soundtrack with some great bass in the club scene and when he's pounding concrete with the sledge hammer. Bass is also a nice impact whenever someone gets punched or kicked. The surrounds and ceiling speakers are used really well for atmosphere, rain and of course bullets. Not sure how to rate it compared to regular DD or DTS tracks though due to it being Atmos and that takes it to another level.

Rogue One DTS HD MA 7.1 Tier 0 Technically this is a reference track, but artistically it's not quiet there. The biggest issue for me is the lackluster music score, there are TV shows these days that have better score. Second not one scene that really stands out and the sound design followed suit there. There was really nothing that you wanna replay as demo. I'm guessing the director really wanted the narrative to have all the spotlight and didn't want a flashy and possibly distracting soundtrack, but rather a one that just cruising along supporting the picture. Of course there is nothing wrong with that, but for us and for the purpose of this thread won't win much accolades at least IMO. Yes great deep bass, dynamics, and decent separation, with natural sounding dialog, and good sense of space afforded by the surrounds, but not enough to take to the top, or being excited about. YMMV.

I wonder if they were trying to recreate the feeling of the original SW with the music score and it just didn't work. I mean gong for a more dated feeling to it..

Williams could always produce at least a few memorable cuts in each film, can you recall one from this film? I can't. The funny thing is Giacchino has many great scores under his belt, but not this one for sure.

blu rays that use rear channels well in 7.1 system

What blu rays do a great job of using rear channels in a 7.1 system?

Any worthy demo scenes for rears in a 7.1 would be appreciated too?

hi frank, I like the Disney WOW 2 disc set for 7.1 on my system as a demo for sound.
it does so good it is like walking in a room full of audio and nothing heard from any
individual speaker fully surrounding you. the sound with my system even carries
down a 20 foot hallway off the HT room. two disc set one for tuning and one is a
demo with several scenes.

I'm not Frank, but thanks for posting. I've had WOW for a long time, but never checked out the demos. I've moved from 7.2 to 7.2.4 Atmos so I'll have to give the demo scenes a try. If they are good in 7.x then with the Dolby up-mixer they should be even better in 7.2.4.

I have the Disney WOW disk and tried some of those demo tracks and although they had some good side effects the rears seem not to really kick in. I was not really that impressed. Perhaps I should give it a second chance. Where they all good for your or is there one that really stands out for you? Also most of those demo tracks on that disk are only 5.1 encoded I believe.

two of the demos were 5.1 yes. first I used the demo to test speaker wiring then ran the set up on my unit, it is a sony 7.1 system.
some of the demos were ok the 5.1 but the 7.1 demo, one was really outstanding.
I might have to get back to you which one it was as it has been a while since listening to it.
if I remember right even the lead in part before choosing the demo was good too.

I loved Rogue One.. but thought the Blu-ray DTS MA track sounds lifeless... good bass and music score.. but not much going on in the mix.. at first, I thought there was something wrong with my system.. !! LOL ... I would give it a tier 3.5.. kind of disappointed... because I love SW films!!!
