The Hurt Locker (DTS-HD MA 5.1) Tier 0

Not to paraphrase ballen420 a few posts back but what this track did, it did perfectly. I just wanted more of it! When the action heated up, this track kicked into full gear. Very bombastic, huge dynamics, everything you would ever want. Unfortunately when the action toned down, I got a bit disappointed. Ambient noise not what it should have been. 360 degree soundstage not there during the dialogue scenes like it was when the action lit up the screen.
I must say though that I don't believe my SVS Ultra sub has ever went down so low or sounded so loud as it did at the end of the opening scene. Prepare yourself if you haven't seen it yet. If you have, you know what I mean.

A Perfect Getaway (DTS-HD MA) Tier 2

As a good part of this movie took place in a Hawaiian jungle, I expected better immersion into the sounds of the jungle. Surrounds were pretty quiet except during a big foot chase or when a helicopter zoomed by. A couple of nice sound moments to throw you off guard and heighten the suspense. (wink, wink FilmMixer )
Dialogue always intelligible and the limited score sounded nice.
Knowing that this only had a week to put the sound design together, a pretty good job all in all.

Spoilers please. I was planning on watching this one soon and had no idea big foot shows up in it. Thanks.

Tough to place this flick. Everything it did, it did perfectly - but there just wasn't much of it. This was a mostly dialogue driven movie in which the dialog was perfectly crisp and intelligible throughout. The score absolutely shined - my speakers were singing, and they sounded beautiful. There were only a couple instances of LFE usage, but the low rumble of the doors shutting early in the movie were amazing. Aside from the score, surrounds were mostly inactive throughout. I would say the track is perfect for the film, but given the nature of this thread, it would be tough to rank any higher then tier 1.

Those who have never heard of this movie, I highly recommend giving it a shot. Sam Rockwell's performance was amazing.

+1. I completely agree. I loved the score.

Thanks FilmMixer for reiterating. My comments were in J6P's line. As you are aware, I am no sound expert.

+1, I wasn't impressed with the LFE in D9.

Have to agree with the comments on the last few pages for this one, I was sucked in from start to finish. Can't put it in better words than Toe.

I also agree, 9 (DTS-MA) Reference.

The LFEs were amazing and everything else about the track seemed to be a perfect fit to the movie.

Why didn't this movie show up in the last OP update? (either as Ref or unfinished business)

Because the last update was a little over two months ago. It'll be on there today.

Almost done!

I agree with all of this and could not have said it better. The end of that opening scene.............Seemed like my eyeballs were rattling in my head, the room was falling apart and my vision blurred severely.......amazing LFE moment. LFE use was fantastic throughout the film besides this moment...........there was one other scene which I cant recall right now where you could hardly hear any bass at all, but you could just feel these intense waves hitting your body and the room was incredibly pressurized........very cool.

Action scenes were top notch overall as far as sound. Awesome surround use with a couple of amazing helicopter pans across the back of the sound stage (are helicopters just the perfect thing to use in a film for great surround panning effects or what).

Dialog was perfect.

Dynamics were amazing.

Ambient more quiet type moments unfortunately collapsed to the front sound stage more than they should have and more times than not. This is really my only complaint, but it was noticeable.

The Hurt Locker (DTS-MA) tier 0

I have completed a thorough cataloging of every audio tier vote cast since this thread began in October 2007. I did this for several reasons:

1. To level the playing field with respect to the rules for tier placement we as a community established several months ago (e.g., 75% Reference votes for Reference placement, two votes required for any tier placement). It's only fair.
2. To ensure that every person's vote is counted. After I took responsibility for the thread, I began to see that the previous OP missed several votes when updating the thread. I wanted to rectify this, and just decided to go all the way back to the beginning.
3. To quickly settle debates over the placement of certain films. "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" are just a few that come to mind. I don't trust the AVS search function to give me all the results I need, so that was another reason to go back to the beginning.

This project turned out to be a lot bigger than I envisioned, which is why it's been two months since the last update. I've been devoting a bit of free time here and there to it, so don't anyone think I've been staying up nights to put this together!

I have compiled information on 1,678 ratings for 684 movies. For each recommendation, I have recorded the recommender's AVS handle, the thread number (this is now the third iteration of the Audio Tier thread), and the post number for easy reference. After completing data entry, I carefully removed erroneous duplicate entries and accounted for changed recommendations (like Toe's reappraisal of "The Matrix," for example). This not only makes it easy for me to "prove" every tier placement you see, it also helps me keep track of all changes and updates to this thread going forward.

That said, you may want to prepare yourselves for a bit of a shock. Several Reference titles just didn't make the 75% cutoff. You may disagree with what you see (for instance, "Ratatouille" and "Live Free or Die Hard" are now in Tier 0). Keep in mind that it's never too late for vote for an "oldie" or reconsider a recommendation you made in the past. Nothing you see here is fixed in stone - and besides which, the matter of Blu-ray audio isn't really all that important in the grand scheme of things.

If anyone would like to challenge what they see, I'll be happy to provide a complete breakdown of the votes I have recorded (and their source) for any title on request. I don't mind being shown the error of my ways - plus the community involvement will only make this list better.

So, here comes an avalanche of data. The first post already contains all the changes you see below. Thanks everyone for your patience!

I agree. 75% may seem like a reasonable bar to hurdle, but with the low vote counts these titles receive (typically fewer than 10), it just takes a few Tier 0 votes to pull the percentages down considerably.

I'm going strictly by the numbers here, but it makes it hard when your favorites get knocked down a notch. Since I have yet to formally rate most of the once-Reference titles, I plan on doing just that in the near future!

Bryan keep in mind that at the very beginning we had Tier 0 as the highest rating, then we added Tier reference without formally nominating many titles again, other then maybe like: "I agree with the reference with that one" stuff like that. But then again you might be ahaed of this curve as well.

BTW if you could check if I gave a formal vote for Master& Commander, if not it is Reference from me.

Thanks again for your continued effort.

Thank for all that work. Although I was surprised to see some of my favorites in reference knocked down, in the overall scheme of things it isn't earth shattering. Everyone has their opinion, it's just the way it is.

Yes, I actually didn't go all the way back to the beginning because of that very issue. I stopped at around post #124 in the first thread, which was around the point where the OP suggested "bolding" certain titles in Tier 0, which was the precursor to the Reference category. In my cataloging I equated Tier 0 Bold with Reference in our current parlance, but I haven't completely figured out how to deal with the first 100 posts. Most of those posts are in the vein of "Wow, what a great thread idea!", but there are quite a few Tier 0 rankings in there for titles we would consider Reference today. Without contacting each of the authors of those posts, I really have no certain idea what they meant.

As it so happens, I don't have a formal vote from you on Master and Commander, so I'll mark you down as "Reference" now.

BTW, having a complete catalog of tier recommendations is great for trivia purposes.

For example, the most overwhelming Reference recommendation was for Star Trek, with 18 Reference recommendations and 1 Tier 0 recommendation.

Runners-up:

The Incredible Hulk: 18 Reference, 3 Tier 0
Terminator Salvation: 14 Reference 3 Tier 0
Hellboy II: 12 Reference, 1 Tier 0
Transformers 2: 12 Reference, 4 Tier 0, 2 Tier 1 (still doesn't make the 75% cutoff!)
Cloverfield: 11 Reference, 1 Tier 0
A Bug's Life: 10 Reference

I agree. Surprised that they were bumped off. Master & Commander, Max Payne, and Wanted are 3 of the best sounding blu-rays I own. I haven't watched Ratatouille on blu-ray yet, but I finally bought it last week. I will vote when I've seen it.

The Strangers (DTS-MA 5.1) - Reference

Absolutely terrifying soundtrack. Great use of surrounds, clear-as-day dialogue, and powerful when it needs to be. From the crackling of the fire to the car crash to the pounding on the door, The Strangers is an outstanding release in AQ. The chilling atmosphere made the movie so realistic.

The Unborn (DTS-MA 5.1) - Tier 0

Very impressive AQ. LFE and surrounds are used well to create an immersive experience.

Bryan, why was Eastern Promises moved from Tier 3 to Unfinished Business? How did it go from ranked to unranked? Just curious... I'm about to watch it tonight.

Also, for Blood: The Last Vampire, which is new to Unfinished Business, would you be able to label it (2009) because there are two versions (animated and live-action). Thanks!

I've only been able to find one vote for it so far. That's the main reason the Unfinished Business list swelled up so much.

Thanks for all the work, Bryan. That's an impressive amount of it.

I actually agree with several of your new placements, and I also think your criteria for placement is quite good, with the possibility of perhaps a little tweaking to it.

Stephen.

Chances are very good that I was drinking when I posted the above.
