Wow, yeah, MI: GP is truly amazing in every way. Great PQ; one of the best tracks I've ever heard. The sandstorm sequence must have had some serious wattage because it knocked my sound out a few times with what I can only imagine was some sort of protection kicking in so that my entire system wouldn't shut down. First time I've experienced that with any track at any sound level. Wow.

Why isn't MI-4 encoded using DTS-HD MA? Why TrueHD? Don't flame me (FilmMixer) but there should be some reason for Paramount / DreamWorks to handpick TrueHD and give a special treatment.

Yes. Just take a look at the 5.1 / 7.1 TrueHD titles especially from DreamWorks / Paramount and how they are rated in the tier thread. Generally they tend to get a better rating than the ones encoded using DTS-HD MA. Transformers 1 (5.1 though), TF3, Kung Fu Panda 1 (5.1) & 2, How to Train Your Dragon, MI4 to name a few.

Because someone chose to use TrueHD.

Maybe they like the way Dolby handles 7.1.

Maybe they understand that it will sound the same regardless of what lossless codec they use and want to keep continuity at their authoring house by using Dolby products for streaming, SD DVD, VOD, PPV, and BluRay.

Does DTS still require/suggest a relative to a Dolby track to be 10db hotter? I thought I heard somewhere and was corroborated discs that featured both Dolby and DTS tracks but the latter was louder so folks assumed it was better.

Which has always been a bit of a concern for me on whether that actually reduces dynamic range or increases the likelihood of clipping or more peak limiting?

As far as I understand if all is being equal the only thing that matters and dictates sound quality is the mix which is irrespective of the audio codec used.

MI4 I really enjoyed that mix, excellent balance in levels and great dynamic range.

The usual difference is 4db and because of the typical value of the dialnorm being used on Dolby tracks. If you have THX certified preamp/receiver it will compensate for that and you won't detect any level differences. I don't know of any examples of 10 db difference between DTS and Dolby on the same title.

DTS has DialNorm too. Theirs defaults to -0dB where Dolby defaults to -4dB. THX also recommends a -4dB offset to compensate for the difference between a theater and the home.

Yes I know DTS has the dialnorm feature but as you point it out it being left at it's default -31 setting versus Dolby's typical -27 hence the difference in overall volume differences . Like Fimmixer never heard THX's recommendation but it sure lowers DTS tracks by 4db in average for the typical encoding differences.

Oops. Fixed the -27/31 thing. They do recommend the -27 for home theaters, along with the 75dB home reference rather than the 85dB theatrical reference. I was talking about the combination of the two levels and how the receivers will be calibrated for that.

They are exactly the same thing.

Since films are mixed with the 85 reference, when you play it back at reference 0 you will get the same SPL. You don't lose 10db since you've changed the level of tone you've used to set SPL by 10db.

If I go on my dub stage and do the same thing there is no net gain/loss.

What's important is what level the film.was mixed at...

There is not a 10db difference in THX home at 0 reference and theatrical playback at 7.....

Maybe, if it is not done properly when it should have been. My question simply stems from the pattern of choosing TrueHD over DTS-HD MA (20 DTS-HD MA titles followed by 1 TrueHD title that gets reference votes), nothing else. There should be some reason behind breaking from the trend and picking TrueHD on exemplary mixes.

I used to be a fan of DTS but not anymore as I fully understood that it is down to the mixing.

This soundtrack is simply outstanding. The use of surrounds is excellent. There's things whirling, whizzing and going on all around you. A few times I turned my head and looked behind me. Gotta make sure there wasn't a Lycan or two standing there. And if that wasn't enough, then you have the LFE. One word... mind blowing! My pants were literally moving during certain scenes and I'm pretty sure I caused some structural damage to my house. Then add Kate in latex and you have one helluva good time in the ol' HT. There are so many slap yo' mama LFE moments your hand will be bruised. Get this movie and turn it up. You will be giddy from LFE intoxication.

100% agree!!!!

Watched the film last night, very impressed with the sound. Indeed reference (though the bitrate seemed a little lower than the typical 24bit mix?) I don't know if they downrezzed to 16 or 20bit, but it sounded great and the 7.1 mix was just spectacular!! I'd say this is the best 7.1 mix I've heard after TRON: LEGACY.
