Forecast: Cloudy with a 60% chance of...frogs.

Paul Thomas Anderson's 1999 opus Magnolia (Blu-ray) streets on January 19, 2010.

At least one site has its review up. Anyone have the disc in-hand to give us a user review?

I have it right here. Sounds and looks good. Won't be able to give it a 100% watch until the weekend, though. Been enjoying Aimee Mann in lossless

My favorite P.T. Anderson Picture. I can't wait to get it! Let us know more about it, once you've watched it, please.

How'd you get it early, b.t.w.?

This film is a mess, but it's a great mess. I'll be picking it up.

It even won an Oscar for best picture (under the name Crash)...

That's the most insulting comment I've ever seen directed at this film.

I actually more interpreted that comment as a slam against Crash...Magnolia came first, but Crash rode its coattails to an Oscar win.

I'm more disappointed that this new release doesn't seem significant enough to B&M stores to warrant any kind of Tuesday sales when it comes out. I haven't seen it in any of the Sunday ads.

You could argue Robert Altman's Short Cuts was the real deal before either Magnolia and Crash.

Amazing film, but I am scared about this release with it coming from New Line. Please no DNR. Please please please.

When I watched Crash, I was stupefied. Not just by how awful it was, but by how blatantly and poorly it ripped off Magnolia. The Academy chose to award that piece of crap Best Picture, while Magnolia couldn't even get a Best Picture nomination?

Can't wait for the Blu-ray.

P.T. Anderson has made no secret of his love of Altman. He was even the "stand-by" director on A Prairie Home Companion in case the ailing director could not finish the film.

I'm a fan of both Altman & P.T. Anderson. Think Anderson's 2007 There Will Be Blood is his best yet. Can't wait to see what else he has up his sleeve.

Absolutely. Perhaps the all-around worst movie I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing.

Movie math:

Crash = Magnolia + faux racism - amphibian-based coincidence metaphysics - honest human emotions.

Or,

SAT movie analogy:

Magnolia:Crash as
Star Wars:The Last Starfighter

I also agree that Short Cuts was the original of this LA trilogy...

Looks pretty good: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare2/magnolia.htm

Funny comment in the review though: the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 at 1559 kbps certainly sounds more robust than the previous DVDs but I suspect it could have gone further with a DTS-HD Master with even more depth and range in both bass and higher end.
sad how some "pro" reviewers still have no idea how lossless compression works

A rare DVDBeaver page with non-ruined captures. I strongly recommend not taking their caps as an indication of the actual BD image (mostly they are overly bright, filled with artefacts not present in the transfer, taken from an analogue source... e.g. Jennifer's Body, The Hangover, Once Upon a Time in China 2, Blood: The Last Vampire, The Invention of Lying, Whiteout, Sunsine, etc., etc.)

How did it rip off Magnolia? Are you saying any movie that has separate stories that barely intertwine at some point is "ripping off" Magnolia (which many have pointed out, wasn't the first movie to do this)? There are plenty of movies that share that same kind of narrative (including "Traffic"). The actual stories in Magnolia and Crash were totally different.

Thematically, Crash was much more shallow (racism is bad, mmmkay?), whereas Magnolia's themes of guilt and forgiveness (what can we forgive?), of expectations and disappointments, run a lot deeper.

Also, stylistically Magnolia runs circles around Crash. From the use of the old Pathé camera to the long tracking shots to the ballsy "Wise Up" song scene, there are a lot of memorable scenes. There is nothing of the sort in Crash.

BTW, I also absolutely love Short Cuts. Here's hoping it gets a BD release as well.

Wow, no love for this film? I'll be picking this up tomorrow with Boogie Nights and am very excited to see it again.

Anyone seen it already and have comments?

there's actually plenty of love for the film. unfortunately the trend lately on AVS has been to emulate AICN where 1/2 the time when a new disc is listed, the people who DISLIKE the film for some strange reason feel compelled to come in and tell everyone why they DON'T like it. Basically threadcrapping and initiating unproductive arguments, (look at the Paranormal Activity thread as an example) If members here would just focus on what they DO like instead of boring, wasting everyone else's time with what they DON't like, it'd be a much more pleasureable experience.

I for one, LOVED the film. Am psyched for the Blu Ray and couldn't give a rat's ass about the reasons some people DON'T like it.

Just watched the whole movie, great disc. Grain is completely natural and film-like start to finish. Sharpness is consistently excellent throughout too (unlike Boogie Nights which had some great looking scenes and some much poorer). Sound is nice too. Pretty impressive for a New Line catalog.

Haha, definitely agree there. I actually do not know many people that like the film as much as I do, but I really do not care as I thought it was great and am very excited to see it on Blu.

C'mon Rob. You know better than that. Of course, everyone's entitled to their opinion but this is a thread for the disc itself. Even if done in fun, what's the point in coming in to the thread just to say how much you don't like the film or think it's overrated? That's a threadcrap and one of yours here was already removed by a mod. How would you like it if in a thread for Lawrence Of Arabia someone did the same? It serves NO purpose and often derails the thread. That's why some Forums like DVDTalk ban threadcraps.
