First a word of warning make sure you have the volume of your audio system at lower level. I have to jump up and reach over for my remote to mute my system because I tought the elevated bass (LFE) level on this disc is going to damage my drywall. There are more LFE energy on the opening credits than the whole of 2012 I like "bassy" movies but this is just ridiculous Please studios I warned you No Jagr while mastering blu-ray transfers!

The fine details are obviously better than DVD. But the color timings and brightness and contrast is way overdone. A majority of the movie is tinted with orange and yellow hues that sucked out the rest of the colors visible on the DVD. Some dark scenes that has some elements barely seen or even invisible compared to DVD. The Dutch release however did not suffer any of these anomalies, but the transfer is very dirty. If you can lets all just wait for the remastered version with the director involved. Assuming he is not going to William Friedkin on us.

Warner has been doing great so far with catalog titles recently but this one is botched job.

That's some pretty severe color grading.. I'm guess it's intentional, a sort of "special edition" kind of thing, tweaking things to look different.

I've never seen this film, does it actually have anything to offer to an adult viewer?

Aside from the color changes that's about as good as I would reasonably expect an 80s anamorphic movie to look.

Apparently WB decided that the colors needed to be changed for BD. Meanwhile, they didn't even bother letting the director know that the BD was coming.

I never saw it in the theater, but it's worth noting that the US BD looks different from every previous video release. It's the odd man out.

They, and other highlights, were eliminated by unnecessary contrast boosting, along with lots of shadow detail.

What the hell is this abomination? They could've given us a nice decent transfer like Labyrinth or The Dark Crystal but they had to pull a Dracula and get creative with the color timing. Just dreadful.

From the article Jason One linked:

Quote:
Sometimes the studios areit's just unbelievable, Petersen said. I would have loved to get involved and work on the colors a little bit, let's do this and let's do that. They didn't tell me. It's strange.

Nearly thirty years later, the director still retains an intense love for the film. And he'll be enjoying the high-definition offering as much as the rest of usas soon as he picks up a copy.

I just told my assistant to get me the Blu-ray, he exclaimed. I have a beautiful theater at home and I can screen it there. I have not seen it yet in Blu-ray, and I have family here from Germany, [so] we really are looking forward to seeing it again. It's been a long time since I've seen it. I'm so anxious to see how it looks on Blu-ray.

Poor guy is going to have a heart attack when he sees this.

Xylon, any chance you could compare some shots to the ones I posted of the Dutch blu-ray?

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...9#post18229239

I'd like to see how it holds up to the American version and dvd.

It depends on how much you like children's fantasies. I was 35 when I first saw it and immediately fell in love with it, and have watched it many times since. Parts of it are astonishingly moving. The book is good too, if one is a reader of the Potter books, and the film only covers the first half.

Remember this is way before CGI. Lots of matte paintings.

Apparently this Blu-ray is a disaster. Just because the DVD is a bargain-basement item doesn't mean that there isn't a large audience anticipating a high-definition transfer.

Plus there's a German version that is slightly different, discussed at length on page 5 of this other thread:

That daylight shot seems pretty overcooked, but I wonder why WB would apply a strong orange tint to some scenes for no reason at all. It's worth noting that the director himself isn't the only reference the studios have for theatrically "correct" colors.

I confess I did not see this in the theater, but I have an early beta copy, and it looks like the DVD as far as contrast and color balance.

WTF, so Peterson had no input into this? That is insane! I am stunned. Well, I'm not, but come on! The is a film that has long been loved and Peterson is a big name director.

Cant say my memory is that good, but as far as I can remember the DVD didnt look right. To bright and to desaturated.

But I cant say for certain that the BD is accurate, but the orange tint do work better with my fading memory of the theatrical visit.

Good movies are as rare as an on topic discussion.

Dang, I had a thought about something this was reminding me of but it's gone now. Oh well, maybe it will come to me later.

OHhhhhhh, that's right (heh, I could go back and erase but this is more fun!), this is kinda reminding me of the differences between the dvd/oldbd of Stargate and the new bd. The only thing is that in this situation, the new bd is the odd one out whereas with Stargate it was the dvd that was the odd one out.

Jesus cristo, being a blu Ray owner is an emotional rollercoaster....extreme highs and really bad lows....in 2 screenshots I can't even make out the picture at all!

"How long were you in Mexico?"
" uh...a week, no, no, a day..."
"Well, which is it a week or a day?
"uh...a weekday?"

All I can say is, the studios are going to save me a lot of money on replacing my favorite movies if they keep making my favorite movies look and sound like crap on Blu-ray...

The other thing that's sad is that most people are unaware of this sort of thing. They'll just see the film in the store or in a promotional flyer or something, and just go buy it. And because of the industry's insistence that Blu-ray is "better", they'll probably assume this is the way the film's supposed to look.

If the director's reaction is anything like ours, heads will roll at the studio and we'll get a new release in a year or so.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mister Anderson.

Here's a thought: if Petersen's never seen the US Blu-Ray, and he saw the previous home video releases, maybe he assumed the colors are the same as the previous releases, hence wanting to "work on them", but unbeknown to him, Warner has already fixed them
