DVDBeaver review of the Disney US disc. Sadly not the same insane 40Mbps encode that was on the Disney JP Blu-ray, but at least it doesn't look as DNR'd as the UK version.

From what I have heard about the Hong Kong version, it is better than the U.K. version. I haven't seen any screen shots comparing them, but that is the general consensus over at Blu-ray.com

I was going to import the Hong Kong one, but seeing how the U.S. release looks now, and that it has the Japanese Track, I'll probably just order that one.

The Optimum Blu-ray looks wonderful in motion. Yes, screenshots are a good indicator of what to expect - but it never reveals the whole story which is another affair in playback. So it is too harsh to bash this release the way it is in (some of) the forums...

For anybody that has the bootleg dvds from china, or maybe the japanese dvd, did you guys recall there being another set of voice actors that dubbed it into english or am I just crazy? Not the bad "Warriors of the Wind" dub - I heard they even changed her name in that one, but in this dub it was her correct name. I definitely recall hearing it in english but I cannot get details on it - I tried watching the new ones dubbed by Alison Lohman but they just didnt sound right! Is that a separate soundtrack that will be in this BR release?

TIA!

You're just crazy. I'm pretty sure there have only been two official English dubs for Nausicaa, the Warriors of the Wind one and the one by Disney.

Disappointing that this is selling for around $30 at retail today. Anyone pick this up yet?

Some of the Ghibli movies have old dubs and new dubs (Porco Rosso, My Neighbor Totoro, etc). But I don't think Nausicaa was one of them.

I got it at Target today since it was $28 before applying the Disney coupon. I'll just wait to see if it goes lower anywhere else.

Hi, everyone! Like many of you, I picked up the US Nausicaa Blu-Ray and just finished watching on my Sony crt hdtv. To my eyes, the Disney version has the film grain removed and the color temperature is reduced, leading to a slightly less reddish picture (Japan just sets their color temp higher, as I understand). I think the movie looks very good, everything is crisp and sharp, but it's not as "warm" as the Japanese version.

I don't know if the Disney disc is different from the UK version. The technical data suggests the US version is unique; the video has the smallest file size of the three, to make room for the Nausicaa featurette and "World of Ghibli" extras.

What I need are some screenshots that I could use on The Ghibli Blog. I may just use the photos from the DVD Beaver page for now, but if anyone could help out, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm also eager to hear everyone's impressions and opinions. I'm sure you're more experienced with the technical side than me.

Picked up the Nausicaa Blu-Ray and watched it for the first time ever (not a big Miyazaki fan...) and have to say I really enjoyed Nausicaa. Beautiful artwork with a very good story. I'm actually thinking about maybe picking up the Japanese release.

If I used a tripod these screenshots would have been better, but you can still "see" the grain is present (I kind of like the look):

I don't have the Japanese BD for comparison, but the image on this Disney release appeared very natural. There was a consistent layer of grain throughout with some scenes showing much more. It was quite a beautiful image IMO. I'd be shocked to find out that Disney tampered with it. I own every Disney animated release thus far, and while I love most of those, Nausicaa definitely does not show any signs of Disneys infamous restoration work. Even the colors seemed to be more subdued and had less "pop" than the usual Disney release. Alice In Wonderland being the worst offender IMO with the boosted gamma and color. I didn't see any of that in Nausicaa. But again, I don't have the Japanese BD to compare, so who knows. But if Disney did do something, then I think they showed restraint and did a splendid job.

Very happy with the PQ on the Disney BR. One small disappointment... apparently no way to lose the English titles on the opening title sequence, even choosing Japanese language track and no subtitles. I love the artwork of that sequence, so it's a shame to have the names of the English dub cast burned over it, especially when you're not going to be listening to them.

Anyone have an extra Disney Rewards coupon they could send my way? I was thinking about picking this up tonight but the coupon is no longer available.

Picked this up from Target and watched it today. I really enjoyed it as I have all of the other Miyazaki films I've seen. Makes me really want to see them get Kiki's Delivery Service on blu-ray.

Kiki should come out after Laputa (already out in Japan) and Totoro if the pattern holds.

Picked up Tales from Earthsea at the same time as Nausicaä (only available on DVD for now).

Adaptation of Ursula K LeGuin's books (or at least a couple of the series). Directed by Miyazaki's son. Decent film, had similar thematic elements to a lot of Ghibli films including Nausicaä, and of course, beautiful animation.

Worth checking out.

Very disappointed that they only included the video angle with English credits. I don't know why they insist on messing things up. With Ponyo it was lossy audio, now they fix that but instead decide to create another issue that was never a problem before (on Blu-ray or DVD.)

It looks extremely similar to the encode on the Japanese disc though. I would be impressed if anyone could tell them apart in motion.

Has anyone seen the Hong Kong version for comparison? Does it too have the burnt English credits?

I remember when that came out but due to copyright issues involving the name it was never released, I wound up getting a HK bootleg several years ago of it with the eng dub and really enjoyed it. Of course, now that it has an official US release I will buy it, but I am going to hold out for the Blu-Ray release...

The lack of Blu-ray for Earthsea is disappointing. And I'm wondering if it'll ever happen since it just came out as a new release as DVD-only.

Nausicaa was released in Japan last July, and was just released in the states two weeks ago, so... Laputa and the Yamadas were released in Japan in December, so expect those sometime during the next six months I suppose.
