I just bought the BD of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and watched the Director's Cut last night. It's been a long time since I'd seen it, and I rather enjoyed it for the most part.
Tonight I put in the disc to watch the "Richard Dreyfuss enters the spaceship" sequence that is in the Special Edition rerelease version (and was subsequently cut from the Director's Cut). All 3 versions - Theatrical, Special, and DC - are on the one BD.
Zounds!! As soon as he enters the mother ship, he's lost nearly all his whiskers (he is quite unshaven up till that point in this part of the movie) and his sideburns and hair are a bit shorter, too. What a blooper of a continuity error. That alone would be reason to cut it from the Director's Cut. Maybe Spielberg did that on purpose so he could have reason to excise it later.
