This ought to be interesting. Think this is the first time I've seen one of your threads open but with no pictures in it yet, Xylon.

EDIT: If that 20th Century Fox logo is anything to go by, we're screwed!

It reminds me of the logo at the start of Futurama.

Suggestion: only use I-frames from the original release to take compression issues out of the equation as much as possible.

The second screenshot from the new disc just made me laugh out loud!

Unbelievable!

I'll just have to buy this now, to see how bad this looks in motion.

I once bought the Gulliver's Travels Blu (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...lliver+travels) just to have "The worst BD in existence" in my collection. This new release is a major contender in that department.

The funny thing is that Fox could use Xylon's screenshot comparisons as marketing materials to sell this release. The scary thing about this release is I have a feeling the studio is going to get plenty of positive reinforcement about what they did. Some of those shots look worse than others, but all look like it was shot in HD video. J6P would not be complaining about this one. The original release would drive them crazy.

The shot from the new BD with Arnold holding the binoculars and the one with Elpidia Carrillo don't look too bad.

Look at me! I'm a wax dummy!!

PREDATOR is a grainy film. They used a film stock that did not require a lot of light, but the trade-off was it was grainy as heck. That is how the film is supposed to look.

They have performed a full on Grain-Rape and it is deplorable. Someone should be fired for this.

Well, that shot isn't that offensive to me. He doesn't look as bad as Arnold does in the 4th shot.

But, someone should only be fired over it if it wasn't exactly what they were supposed to do. I have to wonder if they could DNR this back in 1987 (or could they?) for the theatrical release, would they have? If the studios think grain is so bad for the home, shouldn't they think the same of the theatrical exhibition?

LMFAO!!! If there ever was a contender for proof that grain reduction is just plain awful, that one picture above surely proves it!!!

Just AWFUL!

Can we get a ban on the use of the word "rape" for anything but the physical crime itself, please? It's extremely offensive to use it to when talking about what is in essence a hobby in the first place, and much more so for those who know someone who's gone through the ordeal or have had it happen to them.

Contrast changes and cooler temp, oh yea love that 'Dynamic' BS. -See Pics 5 & 6. Although I am not seeing any EE just pronounced edges due to the film stock.

Arnold now in glorious "Wax Action Hero" clarity.

Pic 3 and 4 clearly illustrate the tug of war between those who want accuracy vs misguided revisionism.

In Pic 3 the shot was very well lit resulting in less pronounced grain so when the DNR steamroller passed through its affects are not as visibly detrimental as it is in lower lit grainer sections. Thus the DNR folks proclaim that only some parts are negatively impacted by the filter but with further examination even the better parts are softer and lose finer detail just not as extreme waxiness.

Now with Pic 4 it is much lower lit and the grain structure is far more apparent and pronounced, when the roller steams along it causes waxy-fication.

Remember folks DNR does not add detail it averages an approximation and in places pixels of color it interprets as similar. Its affect is less evident with much finer grain film stocks, or well lit scenes, but DNR filters remove fine details along with its 'cleansing' powers.

Best Regards
KvE

Thank the lord I still have the first disc. Even though it's an old MPEG2 encode, it's very watchable. Wax World is not.

Dillon: My men were in that chopper when it got hit! Hopper's orders were to go in and remove grain and the detail just disappeared.
Dutch: It didn't disappear. It was scrubbed alive!

That is just... an abomination.

Movies look their best when they look like movies. More Patton-esque remasters!

Also, on Picture 5, you now can really see the matte painting to the left of the shot.

it's amazing that there's actually a decent sized group, (especially elsewhere) that genuinely prefer the new disc.

The worst part of this is lately I'd been thinking how much better Fox had been doing with some of their old films ever since the Patton 'incident'. Now they've just gone and undone all my good will towards them in one single stroke. 'Remastered', my arse. They've spent sod all to remaster this film, just run it through their $10 grain filtering software set to 'max reduction'.

I can only hope John McTiernan did not authorise or even know about this transfer, because this is a dire, shocking treatment of his film. Die Hard 1+3 turned out FAR better than this!

I second a previous poster's thoughts on the Alien Quadrilogy. I am NOT looking forward to how those turn out. Hopefully at least Ridley Scott and James Cameron will have final approval over the transfers of their two films and rout these bastards at Fox who even attempt to DNR their films. Though not convinced Ridley Scott will have much of a say based on how Gladiator turned out.

I couldn't be happier with how the Die Hard films turned out. Those BDs are an ideal example of how releases ought to be handled.

I am already thinking of some especially grainy scenes in the SE version of Aliens... I am afraid, though, that grain is going to be synonymous with poor PQ to the vast majority.

And, really, if you look at what they were trying to achieve with this disc (and I'm not saying it's right), they did an amazing job of turning film into HD video. Some think whoever did this should be fired - I see them getting a promotion. They may be public enemy #1 at AVS, but, unfortunately, they totally accomplished their mission...

Cameron may care more than Scott, but, at the same time, Cameron is the guy who used to prefer full frame transfers of his super 35 films. Maybe his attitude has changed with the increased number of 16:9 screens, although I get the impression (based on Avatar's home video aspect ratio) that he is not a fan of "black bars" no matter what. I don't know if he's ever said anything about it, but I could see him thinking grain interferes with the viewing experience...

Only on 4:3 TV and only because he despised pan-and-scan.
