Just picked up this Dutch release. The new transfer is a massive improvement over the horrible Sapphire-series release. There are some slight compression issues - and perhaps the tiniest bit of source related filtering and ringing, but overall a very pleasing and stunning film-like image.

If you plan on importing this version, please make sure you buy the right version. The packaging is entirely similar to the white EU-steelbook, with the exception of a blue 10th Anniversary sticker on the back.

*Contains both the theatrical and extended cut through seamless branching*

Enjoy:

This should make most of us happy.

1. We can get the studio to rerelease a movie because of quality issue.
2. We got a proper remaster of Gladiator

Good movies are as rare as an on topic discussion.

Thanks for the caps, BsRoz. Any idea where those of us outside the Netherlands could order a copy?

If you plan on importing it by way of a Dutch webshop, I'd suggest you wait a couple of a days.
There is a lot of confusion surrounding the packaging of this release and it has not been confirmed yet if some of the bigger online shops (bol.com, frs.nl) are actually shipping out the right version.

Oh and those with the old version, please feel free to match some of these shots for a comparison.

No more forcefields and it looks like actual HD, not upconverted garbage. Fine detail everywhere.

Looks even better than I hoped for. Deliciously fine grain and detail galore. Sharp without sharpening. Another title that proves pretty much any big Hollywood movie made in the last 10-15 years can look as good as one made yesterday if give a proper transfer.

Unbelievable. I never thought this would happen. Looks so much better than I could have hoped. This and Braveheart really show how good modern remastering technology can truly save a catalog film, given that time, effort and care are put into them. No more excuses for "good enough" with DNR and EE. Thank you Universal/Paramount.

Whiggles summed it up well on his site:
Quote:

This is vindication for all those of us who stamped out feet and complained about the previous release, who did what we could to spread the word, who refused to listen to the naysayers who claimed this film would never look any better (including one supposed industry insider who shall remain nameless who told us to stop complaining and either sit further away from our screens or find a new hobby).

The funny thing is that it looks less grainy as well. Look at the sky with the arrows in it.

Although this is one of my most favorite films I also avoided buying Gladiator in Blu-ray like the plague after all of the terrible AVS and other reviews. Given the comparison pics between the crummy "Saphire" print and the glorious new remasterd print it is a good thing I did, what a total piece of garbage (my DVD print looks better, at least it has flaming arrows ) That said, the new print is beautiful and I will be purchasing the remasted disk the day it is released. Let this be a lesson to the movie studios; when you release a film in Blu-ray, DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME SO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN!

The main difference is a proper HD transfer versus a completely oudated and overprocessed piece of s*h*i*t*. And yes, the color grading has been improved as well.

well you would think they learned that with the original Fifth Element.....but the screen shots show a movie that now looks worth having, and so I wonder if they will be doing any trade ins.

Is the Dutch version, region locked??

best move for Universal-Stop transferring, mastering.If not for the sake of the films, do it for our planet.-Harris;

It is very likely to be region free since...
1. It's a Universal title, and their discs are always region free.
2. The disc contains two region A languages (Português (Brasil) and Español (Latino America)) and one region C language (Chinese).
3. The previous release was region free.

They do it on purpose. Intentionally withholding special features and decent transfers ensures that they can easier get someone to buy the same movie multiple times through incremental upgrades.

Probably a dumb question but is it in English?
