So I just found out Alliance has already released Terry Gilliam's "Time Bandits" on Blu-ray. It's 1080i and reportedly underwhelming.

Image Entertainment is supposed to release it on August 24, so time will tell if their disc is any different. They have certainly been known to release 1080i films previously.

I'm starting the thread as a heads-up to any Canadians or potential importers to wait it out. I've got a rental coming so I'll take screenshots of that when it shows up, but it won't be until next week.

This is a boring comparison, so I won't even bother with many shots.

The Canadian disc uses the same dusty, dirty, scratched transfer as the previous Blu-ray releases (plus boosted gamma), but the encode is just plainly bad. And the UK encode wipes the floor with it.

The upcoming Image release in the US is going to have to be a different disc and encode, as there is no FBI warning (only INTERPOL), the disc opens with all sorts of Alliance logos, the menus are bilingual, and the movie encode itself begins with an Alliance logo.

It will no doubt use the same old transfer, but it remains to be seen whether they will attempt to "clean" it up.

Yeesh. So it looks like I was half-wrong and Image authored a new disc but used the same encode, even though it starts with an Alliance logo.

I emailed Gary Tooze and he confirmed that his disc is the Image Entertainment version.

Quotes from the press release, with my emphasis:
Quote:

'IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES THE PREMIERE OF FOUR ACCLAIMED TITLES FROM HANDMADE FILMS ON BLU-RAY

Time Bandits, Long Good Friday, Mona Lisa, and Withnail and I remastered for HD premiere!'

'On August 24, Image Entertainment celebrates HandMade's three-decade heritage with the Blu-ray debut of four HandMade Films classics: The Long Good Friday, Time Bandits, Mona Lisa and Withnail and I. These are examples of British drama and humor at their finest: illuminating the human condition with sympathy, intelligenceand time travel! Fully remastered, all-new 1080p high-definition transfers have been created for the HD debut of these incomparable titles, and they will be available for an SRP of $17.97 each.'

'And, newly remastered on Blu-ray, with lossless DTS-HD Master Audio, these classics shine with a clarity never seen before!'

Don't they have laws against this?

They made their own master from the already struck master, they added the DNR and other mess.
This is their master to use as they will

Oh well, I only paid $12 for my preorder- it will still be better than the DVD.

XBOX Live: Wagmman
PSN: Wagg
BFBC2: Wagman
Steam: Wag

My Second Life character looks and acts exactly like me except he can fly.

This might be one I'll have to get anyway. The only DVD I have is non-anamorphic (is that the only one?), so this will be an improvement in any event. And it's such a niche title, I can't really see the studio going to extremes to make a shiny new HD master.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mister Anderson.

Bleah! After seeing those gawd awful dvdbeaver screen shots, I'm even considering pulling it from my Netflix rental queue.

Movies look their best when they look like movies. More Patton-esque remasters!

Thanks for the tip about the DVDBeaver review. It looks horrible. I cancelled my preorder.

I imported the German BD and just flipped through Image's BD (which I received for review). Sadly those screenshots are dead on in terms of conveying the differences -- even though this has been sourced from the same master (they have the MGM logo at the start), it's got visible compression issues as others have mentioned throughout.

Just bizarre...I wonder why this happened?

Cry. Just to confirm -- got the US version yesterday, and it does indeed show 1080i on the back of the box. Not going to bother opening it -- just going to return it.

Blu-ray.com review is up also confirming all that has been said.

That first shot on DVDBeaver showing all the garbled interlacing isn't actually like that on the disc, by the way. Just their PC deinterlacer going haywire, in case that wasn't obvious. That shot still looks bad just because of compression though.

I have a suspicion Image will eventually hand this (and Mona Lisa et al.) to Criterion and didn't feel obliged to put any effort into the current release. It's not excusable but at least there's a decent chance we'll get an improved version god-knows-when.

Honestly, I think this movie is borderline awful and this comes from a Terry Gilliam maniac.

It certainly isn't one of his best.

I was able to pick it up for $4 during a Black Friday sale.
I guess it was worth it.

I remember really enjoying it in the theater when I saw it.
Not so much this last time around.

I remember seeing this when it first came out, when I was but a wee lad of 10 or 11 years. Some of it went over my head then, and I never quite understood the ending even to this day, but I hardly think it's that bad. Indeed, this comes from the period before Gilliam went totally overboard, with things like Baron Munchausen, and that unfinished Don Quixote project that became Lost in La Mancha.

In 1981 my folks built the garden in the back yard and I had my red tricycle. I'm finding allot of outdoor activities also so I have no idea if I had found the time to see this then. I was three, but I don't think that I would place this in the over my head category.

I don't think that I actually saw this until 1982. The ending reminds me of Coraline.

I think it's easily one of his best and most consistent works. Also one of the most commercially successful films he ever made on top of it (one of the only ones).

Truly awful is FEAR AND LOATHING or TIDELAND, which are both borderline unwatchable.

WHAT!?!? Someone who doesn't like F&L? I'd argue with you but the bats will get you soon enough

With the exception of Tideland (which I haven't seen) there has not been a Terry Gilliam film I have not appreciated (that being said very few are perfect).
