I found a 720p .mkv file on the net and watched it using my WDTV Live and the sound on that file matches my memory (and LaserDisc). Very full bodied and impressive. Rendering my blu-ray completely useless and a waste of money

I don't know, definitely not the Blu-ray because the abrupt tape-hiss fade-out (most probably the hiss was cut using noise-gate at the studio) at the end of The Circle of Life opening scene is not there and instead the tape-hiss is just lowered.

The soundtrack is also nowhere as rear-heavy as the Blu-ray (the shout in the beginning of the song comes equally from all five speakers, the Blu-ray version it's rear-heavy).

The synth bass line in the opening scene is also can be clearly heard unlike the blu-ray version.

Guys,
I'll jump in. I did not notice the audio difference at first due to the fact that we never really listenend to the DVD with the 5.1 theater mix at reference levels. This thread sparked my interest. ...YES, the DVD is superior to the bluray in fullness and impact. I bought the basic blu/dvd combo so if Disney re-releases I wont feel too gouged by upgrading. The blu is not bad but once you go back and crank that dvd it is evident.

Love for all things Hi-def...Losing count; 200 plus bluray, 500 plus dvd, 30 plus HDdvd and a rapidly growing 50 plus in the cloud.

New coloring, new Disney logos, new title cards, new(?) letterboxed end credits. I'll post some 3D shots later but from what I checked it's like the 2D BD + floating window framing + focus differences to accommodate the planes. (EDIT: added them.)

very weird, a few of them appear to be 16-235 not expanded and yet others clearly have been, kinda odd looking those blu-ray frames

Just posted my opinion on the Audio Tier thread. I would encourage others here to do the same.

If that's the case, I wish so very much that they had included it...

Yes Disney is very good to make their theatrical mixes even better with their enhanced HT mix, I wonder what had happened here, or why they didn't use that for the English track.

Good question. Usually with Disney I can count on great PQ and AQ, but they really dropped the ball on this one.

I finally got a chance to compare the original DVD release to the current BD release. On the DVD, I listened to the original DD 5.1 mix and the Home Theater DD mix. On the BD, I listened to the English DTS MA mix (*see below). I listened to the opening sequence and the stampede scene.

*I should note that my Anthem AVM20 processor can only decode lossy codecs, so the DTS MA mix is processed as DTS core at full bit rate. However, while there may be some differences in SQ between DTS MA and full bitrate DTS core, I don't believe for a second that this would explain the big differences I heard between the different mixes.

I found it interesting the the bass levels in the original DD mix and the DTS MA mix were similar (the DD mix had a wee bit more at times). The Home Theater mix definitely has much more bass impact which adds excitement to the scenes mentioned above that the DD and DTS MA mixes lack.

In terms of use of the surrounds, the Home Theater mix and the DTS MA mix are much more aggressive than the DD mix. The DD mix sounds a bit flat and less exciting than the others.

IMO, of the three mixes, the Home Theater mix sounds the best by a good margin. It has the exciting use of surrounds like the DTS MA mix, doesn't sound as sterile/brittle and has much better bass levels.

I really wish Disney would have included the English Home Theater mix on the BD. It's a real shame that PQ is first rate but AQ is quite a step backwards.

What the heck happened to Timons arms in the end of his hula dance? theyre gone.

Has it always been like this or was this a screwup with the blu ray?

I imagine they had to port the CAPS data to Toonboom in restoring it... maybe some cels got lost in that process.

This fine wine is really good - it tastes like it was bottled yesterday!

Has anyone contacted Disney about all of this, and gotten their side of the story? I mean, it's not like they are Warner...

I did contact Disney regarding my complaints about AQ, but only received a generic response saying they received my email.

Hehehe....going through it frame by frame, you can see in the preceding frames he is putting his hands behind his head, so I think his hands/forearms are suppose to be behind his head, but it does look like they are missing.

BTW, it appears exactly the same way on the original DVD release.
