One more time: The version of TOS shown on CBS Action fills the 16:9 screen with no borders. Just like the Jap version, then. Maybe I should've just typed that instead.

No, you shouldn't have typed that. Perhaps you should've typed "Japanese version", but you certainly shouldn't have typed that.

Or you could stop being so overly sensitive as you knew exactly what he meant.

Knowing what he meant is exactly why it's important to point out the discrepancy between that and what he said.

Individual experiences determine how sensitive it's 'appropriate' for one to be. Calling someone "overly" sensitive is just an indication of insensitivity.

Can we get back on topic, please?

What exactly do you consider on topic? This thread has drifted a lot from the beginning. I'm expecting a "Who's a better First Officer - Spock or Riker?" fight to develop next!

tough decision but, have to go with Spock, he was the science officer as well

Yep. Spock was way better

...and Spok had the nerve pinch, mind meld and a uniform that fit properly without having to yank on it every time he stood up.

You also have to admire anyone that can concentrate on work in the presence of playboy Kirk while himself waiting 7 years between the chance for sex. Plus, I'm pretty sure he picks up XM with those pointing ears.

I am so hoping this project is a big success and it leads to DS9 maybe getting done.

I'm pretty sure if you're going that long between events, your marriage has more problems than just lack of love making. That low a frequency would indicate other underlying issues.

Reserving it for your birthday is one thing...reserving it for only when the cicadas come out means your next step is separate bedrooms.

But, the point is, he had the self control to stay true to his wife across the galaxy who would never know if he wasn't. I'm not sure Kirk could have done that. I know Shatner wouldn't have.

That's why it is a trick question!

Riker is no doubt the better 2nd in command... but Spock is a genius.

IF you don't have another genius on the ship, then Spock is invaluable... but TNG has Data... so Spock is not needed...

Conversely... Spock proved time and again to not be good at leading. He was better at following Kirk's lead than when he was left in charge himself.

Riker, however, proved more than once to be a capable leader when Picard was unavailable.

Except that whole getting the Enterprise blown up while Picard was gone thing. Then again he did introduce us to the Enterprise joystick so he can't be all that bad.

Relevant to the discussion at the top of the page. That counts as on topic, right?

TOS 4:3 HD on Netflix vs the cropped 16:9 HD versions shown on TV in some countries. These are from Canada's "SPACE" channel specifically.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

A few things:
1. There are burned-in Japanese subtitles for the "Love Mankind" scrawl, even though this was recorded from a Canadian channel by myself. So this must be the same as Japan got on TV...
2. The big effects shots fill out the screen instead of being cropped, of course.
3. They always cropped with a straight center cut, even when it would make much more sense to reframe downwards.
4. What's up with the noise on the Netflix encode that looks like vertical lines?

You just can't win.

Sign me up for the OAR release. That's the proper version, and anything else is taking liberties unless they're going back and working with the directors and people behind the cameras on every episode (not to mention the people involved in set design and possibly costume design, or even visual effects).

I want the best release of what I saw in the late 80's and early 90's. Not some ridiculous revisionism just because people have issues with pillarboxing.

If you want that kind of garbage, go give away your money to DirecTV/Dish/Comcast/etc. They've got you covered in spades.

PS: I was about to suggest maybe accepting it being opened up slightly, but then I remembered the kind of slippery slope that starts you down (read: George Lucas). I'll have none of that, thank you very much.

I've seen that as well recently.

They also did that to a broadcast of the alan smithee version of Dune.

It's a zoom in.

Exactly...

It isn't a 1.66 taken from exposing more of the original film... but rather a zoom (and thus a crop) of the 4:3 original broadcast.

So I hope people don't really like it done that way... though IF they do, then it's no surprise they wouldn't mind a different kind of crop to 16x9.

As I posted further up, the sad thing is that there are a lot of people out there that "just want to fill the screen" even if it means cropping or stretching 4:3 or 2.35 content to fit and losing part of the image.

But you do accept new VFX? New VFX alone is a slippery slope (er... SW special editions anyone?). To say that one change is ok but another is not (when talking in theory - none of us have actually seen anything yet), is a double standard.

Older TV shows that were shot on film but edited and produced on video tape have no clear path to HD. Compromises will have to be made.

The original effects were done at SD resolution, so our choices are either TNG in HD with new effects or no TNG in HD. New effects aren't an alteration, they're a requirement.

Changing the aspect ratio after the fact is an unnecessary alteration to the original content. I'd probably be fine with it myself, particularly if they went with 1.66:1, but if the creators didn't shoot with anything other than 4:3 in mind and they don't buy into the change, it shouldn't be done.

Well in that case even putting the show on Blu-ray in the first place is a slippery slope!

Maybe the purists should stick with their DVDs on this one

The doc is talking to Picard, his face partly cut off, then he responds while still in that position and finally turns around to fit into the frame.
