I am familiar with such methods, if someone could pm some search terms, I will get back on point by saying it sure would be nice to have any Fincher info at all.

Would dig a Pm about that too...

I dig The Game - one of my favourite films - but no way I could afford the LD + a player.

You can get players cheap on ebay, and discs cheap at laserdiscvault.com.

Considering how much noise there was on laserdisc, I couldn't watch it again. The Japanese discs were the only ones that don't still look like crap.

As far as The Game is concerned, there's a legit Region 1 version of the DVD on Ebay right now.

Looks like the Criterion release is still at least six months away.

Interview with Fincher:
Quote:
Well next thing. I as a fan want The Game on Blu-ray. There's rumors that it's coming to Criterion. Is it true?

Fincher: Uh yes.

Do you know when?

Fincher: I don't, because I haven't had time to look at it. Here's what I knowI've seen two reels of it or the first three reels and it looked good but I think it's a question of - because Gramercy was purchased by Universal, I think it's gone under the Universal home video banner and that they have released very limited funds to finish. And I think that Criterion is having to cobble togetherand they're lovely people and they do amazing work. So I think they're having to pull every favor that they can in order to be able to make the number work so, I don't know when that is and I should.

So it's in the future thoughit is coming?

Fincher: I thought it was first quarter of next year, but I'm sure that it won't happen if I don't look at the stuff

I would say that you're probably involved in it in some way

Fincher: No, I saw some stuff that lookedyou know, again I don't like revisiting stuff. That's why I like to put as much effort into finishing it the right way the first time so that you don't have to go back cuz when you go back it's like oh my God.

Maybe he has as much of a problem with The Game as some of the people on the internet forums.

Woohoo!!!

Updates. September 25th release. Criterion. New transfer. Two 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio tracks (theatrical and new home mix).

From HighDefDigest:
Quote:
The 1997 thriller starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn is finally getting the Criterion Blu-ray treatment in September!

In an early announcement to retailers, the Criterion Collection will proudly present 'The Game' on Blu-ray on September 25.

This multilayered, noirish descent into one man’s personal hell is also a surreal, metacinematic journey that, two years after the phenomenon 'Se7en,' further demonstrated that director David Fincher was one of Hollywood’s true contemporary visionaries.

The Blu-ray will feature a new 1080p digital transfer, Two English DTS-HD 5.1 surround mixes (the original theatrical and a new one optimized for home theater viewing supervised by sound designer Ren Klyce and Fincher), and supplements include: Audio commentary by Fincher, Savides, actor Michael Douglas, screenwriters John Brancato and Michael Ferris, digital animation supervisor Richard "Dr." Baily, production designer Jeffrey Beecroft, visual effects supervisor Kevin Haug, and visual effects producer Robyn D'Arcy; an hour's worth of exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and film-to-storyboard comparisons for four of the film's major set pieces, with commentary; alternate ending; trailer and teaser trailer, with commentary; a booklet featuring an essay by film critic David Sterritt.

I'll believe it's actually a new transfer when it's been proven. Criterion tends to just release the master they've been given, with the only improvements over the existing releases being the lack of additional filtering or contrast boosting that has appeared on the original releases.

It is a new transfer. Fincher himself confirmed it years ago.

Criterion also have new transfer listed for the other Universal titles so shots or nothing on this for me, I have the LD and the DVD with the extras and the UK Blu.
This 100% deserves to look better than se7en and have the silver retention look.

If this looks as good as Se7en, I'll be absolutely thrilled. It'll turn it from a half-off sale purchase to a day one buy for me.

The way it was shot and the process used it SHOULD look better, or like every other Criterion/Universal title it will look the same as the Universal disc.

The ones that were advertised as new transfers were the ones that, from all the evidence so far, had new transfers -- Design for Living, Island of Lost Souls, Monsoon Wedding, Being John Malkovich, Ride With the Devil. The recycled transfers -- Dazed and Confused, Traffic, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Topsy-Turvy, Videodrome, The Last Temptation of Christ, La haine -- were not advertised as new. For a while, the pattern seemed to be be that anything with an existing HD transfer would use it, but Malkovich appears to have broken that pattern (though I'm waiting on a comparison with the HD DVD).

This is fantastic news. I haven't been disappointed in any Fincher movies on Blu-ray yet (not a stickler for the silver retention look), so I have high hopes. The only problem will be paying that Criterion price premium, but it'll be worth it for The Game.

Movies look their best when they look like movies. More Patton-esque remasters!
