Thanks msgohan! While I still believe the new Warner bluray is a big jump from the 12 year old dvd they need to leave the damn DNR to minimal if at all instead of cranked up to max. Yes it appears to me by the screenshots the Alliance disc definitely has more detail. I prefer the look of the new Warner disc in all areas except for the excessive DNR softening the picture.
Armchair Expert™ Time: I believe that the technical term for it is a 'low pass filter'. Basically the entire image has been softened. You can still see the grain in the backgrounds, right, only it looks much more clumpy and coarse in comparison to the Alliance. This is because the softened Warners encode cannot resolve the grain any finer than that, and the colour/contrast tweaks won't have helped either.
I've never bought in to the anti-Warners stance that a lot of folks have around here, but this really is graphic evidence that they're rolling off the high frequency detail.
I cancelled my pre-order for the Warners version and was about to order the old Alliance, but I'm really caught up on the 60i vs 24p issue. Extra detail vs. authentic judder? Which is better? There's only one way to find out......FIGHT!!!
I think I'd still go for the Warner version. I could deal with the edginess and boosted gamma of the Alliance original, but it also has temporal DNR throughout.
The Warner version only has the temporal version during the CGI monkey shots. One of the VFX guys on the secondary commentary track laments how disappointed they were with the work of the effects house that did all of those shots, because the way they scanned and printed them made them look like old optical comps. He also noted how fake it looks besides that.
I was kinda surprised how much he was allowed to moan about iffy effects considering the tracks were recorded only a few months after theatrical release. I didn't listen to the other track with the director and writer; did they admit their failures too?
I watch this tonight for the first tme.Not bad.Fun movie.Dr Smith was good.Special effects were excellent.Look great on my 110 screen and epson 8100.It had all the charm of the original.Goofy' dum' fun some scary parts and adventure.I give it a B
If I had to choose I would still easily pick the Warner as I prefer the tone to the cold, harsh, digital look of the Alliance transfer, and if that one has antiquated temporal DNR then it's useless anyway. But yes, it's pretty clear there's detail missing on the Warner.
Gary Oldman is m much underrated actor (IMO). If you like period and classical music get Immortal Beloved . He does a fantastic job in a fantastic film.
Exactly and he should have at least been nominated for Imortal Beloved or Count Dracula or JFK or Leon or The Dark Night or..... That is underrated.
