I don't own any of these yet. Even on Amazon's UK site these aren't cheap, especially if I have to buy the Christmas release separately. So I am going to wait for Series 3 to be released, and hopefully they will have a big set of them all for a decent price.

The Amazon UK price for the Series 1 BDs was reasonable but is much higher for Series 2. I saved a little money on Series 2 by buying it at Amazon.com.

As others have already pointed out, it appears that Amazon UK's dreaded "We are not able to dispatch this item to your default delivery address" warning is not being enforced. Although the warning appeared on the page for the Region B Locked version of the Kind Hearts and Coronets BD, I ordered it anyway and Amazon UK confirmed my order. Time will tell whether it really ships or not.

From what you say, though, it appears that it won't play Region B and C BDs without a hardware hack. That sounds like a big mess to have to undertake with a $500 BD player. I was hoping for a simpler solution.

The hardware hack for the BDP-93 is ridiculously easy to install:

As much as I admire the Oppo BDP-93, I didn't think spending in the neighborhood of $400 extra over what I am paying for the LG from World Import to get one would be justified. I am optimistic that the LG will satisfy my modest needs.

The Downton Abbey Series 3 BDs are now available for preorder from amazon.uk. They are to be released on 11/5. I ordered them this morning and they are scheduled to arrive between 11/8 and 11/12. Can hardly wait!

On another issue, my cheap LG BD player, which I bought with the all region chip installed by World Import, continues to perform flawlessly.

They'll almost certainly be region free, but whether they're encoded as 24p or 50i is another matter. If I'm not mistaken, the first 2 seasons were encoded at 24p, but the Christmas special was 50i for some reason. Some US players will handle 50i with no problem, but others won't (most noticable are Sony players, including the PS3).

I couldn't tell whether they were region free or not by looking at the amazon.uk page for the series. Fortunately, though, I didn't have to worry about it because I have an all regions BD player.

Looks like someone reviewing on amazon uk bluray series 3 has confirmed the bluray edition is NOT region free. Regardless, will I be able to play this on my ps3 with the lv2patcher or should I just spring for the dvd?

I received the season 3 import today. It is indeed region B.

I'll be able to check for 50hz content later tonight.

I got my copy of the Downton Abbey Series 3 BDs from Amazon UK yesterday and, like you, confirmed that the discs are Region B. Although I have an all regions BD player, I just got it back from the repair facility but the rocket scientists there forget to send back my remote. Unfortunately, the remote is required to set the player for Region B BDs. World Import represents that my remote is now on its way back to me so with any luck, I'll be able to watch my Downton Abbey Series 3 BDs sometime next week.
