OK...I remember reading about this being released some time ago. I promptly lost track of it. Seems there's been a lot of confusion about who is releasing what when where and various delays have added to the bewilderment.

Short version: I found the Blu-ray this morning here in Winnipeg Canada. I don't know what the story is in the U.S. or elsewhere.

I haven't watched it and can't tell you a thing about it...except that it's real. I'm busy as a sonofagun right now and I don't know when I can review it. In the meantime though, I did take a couple of pictures for you:

Yeah, I'll have to look around but the studio's website is selling this for $35 shipped via PayPal, which is way too much unless the transfer is immaculate.

It's in stock at amazon.ca for $17.49 CDN* but I don't recall where you are so shipping cost may be an issue.

I was fortunate to pick it up for $14.99.

*Canadian and U.S dollars are essentially at par value right now.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I've seen this a dozen times from small studios. They use the template from their DVD release and add some Blu-ray references for the BD release. It's sloppy but common.

I just looked at the backs of the Roger Corman Blu-rays from Shout Factory.

They all say "NTSC Anamorphic Widescreen".

Does it look good?

Sound and video is not magic, it is pure physics. Physics that can be magical

I moved this up on the viewing schedule so I could do a quick review.

I have to say, I think I've learned some very interesting things.

The first thing that caught my eye was that the disc opens with the standard FBI warning. That immediately struck me as a bit odd because discs which are intended for only the Canadian market don't start with an FBI warning (i.e. you don't see the FBI screen on Alliance discs). More on this later.

When the movie itself began, I checked the sound and was again surprised that it was Dolby TrueHD. It's 2 channel mono. I wasn't expecting TrueHD.

Now, to the movie itself. Seen in the grand context of Canuxploitation. It looks very good. That is to say, compared to things like Screwballs and Loose Screws, it looks good. I would generally equate it with most of the Corman Classics from Shout Factory. Considering that this film is somewhat older than the aforementioned flicks, that is a stroke of luck.

The first 5 or 10 minutes of the film display some significant print wear and damage. It's a bit scary to think that some of those pernicious scratches along with dirt, specs and fleck might be part of the whole movie. Fortunately, the damage subsides significantly after the opening few minutes. After that, we see wear mainly in the form of intermittent flecks and specks. So, after the first few minutes, the damage is quite minor and not distracting.

I thought the color reproduction was excellent. Colors are vibrant and well saturated. Flesh tones are perfect. Whites are clean. Blacks are a weak point in some scenes with lack of shadow detail and often (but not always) a slightly brownish cast. Weak blacks seem to be mainly an issue with interior shots as the outdoor shots look fine.

There is very little indication of overt, digital manipulation of the image. You could find some minor EE if you looked hard in high contrast scenes but, for the most part you couldn't really detect an issue. I couldn't clearly identify DNR but it's hard to tell what this almost 40 year old, low budget film should look like. Some of the intense reds look to display some artifacting. All things considered, I'm pleased with the way this film looks and I can say that it exceeded my (fairly low) expectations. Oh, it's a VC-1 transfer.

While I listened to the standard, default soundtrack, I briefly checked out th alternate "Warning Bell" track and I can tell you that it's also Dolby TrueHD.

I also watched the interview with Ivan Reitman and Daniel Goldberg. Defintely required viewing. It's a great story.

Now, back full circle to that FBI warning. When the Reitman/Goldbery interview ended, I let the segment play through the full credits. At the end of the credits the Shout Factory! logo appeared. Hmmm...I have to believe that this is basically a Shout Factory Blu-ray of their just released DVD. It may be disguised as a Canadian disc but there are American fingerprints all over it .

That usually means people took a look at the first reel over the years while it was in storage and never bothered to watch the rest of the movie.

NOW: my post on AVS Forum.
NEXT: someone else's post on AVS Forum.

Geez, I remember seeing ads in the paper for this when I was a kid. "The warning bell tells you when to look away if you're squeamish!"

Too funny.
