XylonHD, YouTube Channel, @XylonHD

Won Seven Academy awards including Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Picture.

This blu-ray transfer did not resemble that film whatsover. To Universal if you don't have the money to do decent transfers please don't bother releasing them. Its just a waste of time.

Uh-oh. That screenshot with Meryl on Blu-ray looked very DNR:ed. Very little grain in the background.

I dont know if it is the directors intent, but whats up with the cyan colorscheme on HD..?

Always nice to see your screenshot, xylon.

Transfer is garbage and belongs in the dumpster. Should never have been released.

If I'm seeing this right the church steeple has edge-enhanced chromatic aberration. Good grief.

Looks like a piece of crap, can't speak for the quality of the movie itself.

Many Bluray releases seem to be pushed to Teal lately: it's an artistic flavour-of-the-month revisionism and whilst maybe being a directors current intent, does not honour the original film.

They've even cropped the Bluray slightly compared to the other releases and so removed picture information along with detail.

I've boycotted this release, along with way too many others because of these travesties.

Some of the worst EE since the Phantom Menace DVD. Then look at the tin roof in the yard pics for some serious DNR. Just wow!!

This is why I refused to buy this title. Really bad transfer. Might rank up there as one of the worst.

Vudu's version doesn't appear to be hit with the EE stick. Same master as the broadcast I spose.

Don't know that I feel like spending 5 bucks to watch it beyond the preview though.

Ugh. It really would be better if they just didn't release stuff like this. So sick of what Universal does to catalog titles.

Ugh. I have this Blu-Ray and have mean meaning to watch it recently. It's been known for a while it's a low-quality transfer but what bothers me most in the screen-caps is the color change. All that warmth in the image that says "Africa," which I've always loved in the film, seems drained out. A true bummer. What the hell goes through the minds of people who do this?

I think they took a dvd master of a few years back, and uprezed it to blu-ray.
I don't know how they made it but that is my guess.

Whatever they did, they made it unwatchable, although everyone is an angel in the blu-ray, because the actors all have these beautiful halos around them........

While the screen caps do not show it very well, but my opp-83 does a better job of uprezing the older dvd of a number of years back and making it a better "viewing experience" than one can get from the blu-ray.

I have always loved the music combined with the photographic art of the movie.
This was first movie my wife and I saw together on our first date back many years ago. She cried a ton of tears at the end.

I got the BD for her birthday.

This time she cried a bunch of tears from the beginning until she said, "turn it off...where is the old dvd??"

Thanks Xylon for the screen shot comparisions--but what does H264 come from? Was this a master that was used or??

What a bitter disappointment this is for one of my all-time faves.

I would dearly love to have a pristine transfer of this film. I have visited the area where this was filmed several times, and always had the wonderful soundtrack playing in my mind during the trip.

I wish this botched transfer would compel enough people to complain to the studio to warrant a new disc, but I'm afraid it won't happen. Perhaps Criterion...

how bad is the blu-ray?

Well, if you watch the beginning, you will see that they are in front of a blue screen when they portrayed the bird hunting scenes in Europe before she goes to Africa.
Or so some BD reviewers reasonably thought.......
However, they are wrong, completely.

The best transfer is my old laser disc, and it is clearly not blue screen.....and i remember an interview with Meryl Streep about an incident with one of the guns.......

How bad is the blu-ray transfer?
It is so bad that Ralph Potts has not done a review....too much of a gentleman with class

Pure rubbish. What a shame. It's such a great movie.

A definite no-buy. Universal Home Video you truly do suck.

And unfortunately if Comcast buys NBC/Universal you can expect things to get even worse.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

Agreed that this appears to be shiite.

But on the specific question of "blue screen," there are indeed a few shots in that hunting sequence of Meryl and Klaus next to a tree that are clearly an effect of some kind (rear-screen projection?).

I remember seeing those shots in the theater when the movie was released and being surprised that such a big-budget, big-name picture had such a cheesy effect in it. My guess is that those shots contained overlooked but necessary clarifying dialogue and thus had to be hastily shot. In any case, it's definitely an effect.

Perhaps, but the big problem was they were trying to shoot on location in the winter. The light there during winter that far north, most of the time is very diffuse and gives everything a very gray color, and destroys or reduces depth perception that one would otherwise have. I am talking about actual vision, not film, but it has a similar effect on film. In some scenes they add lighting on the subjects, which causes a contrast between subject and background, that if one is not careful, gives the background a cheap blue screen type of effect.

If I had the ability I would post some photos taken with a flash that produces the effect.

The LD does not have much of this enhancement effect, but when they did the DVD, because everything was muted, they "enhanced" colors and contrast. The problem was that most of the background was grayish from the natural lighting, and so the more they enhanced, the more it became a cheap looking effect, as the clothes and faces being more "lighted" than the surroundings. These lighted subjects had their colors "enhanced" but the grayish, dull colors in the background remained the same as they responded far differently....

Bingo. Most of those scenes took on this blue screen effect.
Add in all the other 'enhancements" on the BD, and the effect.....is really bad

DNR, edge enhancement, contrast boosting, artificial sharpening. What a combination.
