It would be awesome to see the 4-minute trailer for The Two Towers in full 1080p with lossless audio!

You're right; it's in fact my favorite trailer from the whole trilogy.

Looks like official details are emerging - films WILL be split over two Blu-ray discs. This from blu-ray.com:

Confirming earlier reports (see Blu-ray.com, January 14, March 7 and March 16), Warner Home Video has officially announced the Blu-ray release of the extended version of The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy for June 28. Expectations in many were such that them upping their game surprises. I care mostly about PQ and SQ, so this now officially puts me in the "delighted" column.

Not liking the word "remastered." Were the orig 2k digital files a raw scan of the negative, no cleanup, etc.?

I imagine they're referring to the fully finished DI portion of the film.
Wonder what they're doing with the part that isn't DI.

There's an interview with DoP Andrew Lesnie (link's somewhere in this very thread IIRC) where he says that they finished the remainder of Fellowship once they were happy with the process. Lesnie doesn't say exactly when they finished it though.

The theatrical BD of Fellowship just doesn't have the snap of the other two movies, and it has a few 'analogue' looking artefacts, like the colour fringing on the titles. That one may be a straight HD telecine rather than a downconvert of the DI, whereas the EE could've given them the impetus needed to finish the whole thing in 2K back in the day. That work obviously didn't filter down to the theatrical version of Fellowship, at least not when the video masters were made.

If Warners can keep away from the DNR, Fellowship: Extended could well surprise a few folks.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let the audio be discrete 6.1!

Is there any likely or reasonable way that this FOTR EE Blu-ray will NOT look better than its TE Blu-ray counterpart?

(Not a rhetorical question.)

Any supported, thoughtful answers appreciated.

Sounds from the press release like they're just bringing the 1st movie in line with the other two, not doing any sort of complete overhaul.

Since there will probably be new AVC-encoded transfers (from the existing masters) for TTT and ROTK - it might be possible Warner will lay off the DNR this time.

The DNR in TTT was on par with FOTR, if not messier.

Why didn't they go back to the original 2k files for all three films? I doubt the older TTT EE and ROTK EE HD masters from 2004 for the DVD's (which I bet they are using for this release) were sourced from the original 2k files either.

It still remains to be seen if they are the 6.1 discrete remixes created for the boxed set of the EE's, but this time presented in lossless form. They also called the Ultimate Editions of Harry Potter 1 & 2 6.1 DTS Master Audio, but they were 5.1 matrixed, not 6.1 discrete.

As others have noted in this thread, don't expect a balls-to-the-wall ultimate remastering effort of the Trilogy until Peter Jackson tinkers with them after The Hobbit. He has stated he wanted to bring them in line with the prequel, fix a few CGI effects and add even more footage for a final, polished product.

Count me in as wanting just the 6 discs of the EE Trilogy without all the DVD extras and fancy packaging at a much lower price. If not, I'll have to wait for a Black Friday sale or other deal.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!
