Anybody still think that Warner's spliting LOTRs onto two discs was to optimize PQ? I hope they at least are taking advantage of the apparently unnecessary disc space by upping the bitrates as much as space allows, but I really don't think Warner cares about such trivial things (typed sarcastically), at least not more than their production costs.

I do feel that Warner is doing an overall better job with their BD product than they were a few years ago, and I'm grateful that they're supporting the format more aggressively than any other studio with catalog and television, but it's still somewhat astonishing that they actually bothered to remaster Fellowship, assuming the term "remaster" isn't being used loosely to refer to something much faster and cheaper.

I'm a little confused here or maybe I missed something. Are you saying that the EE of Fellowship is for a fact going to be a remaster and may possibly look better than the TE of this film?

I haven't followed any recent trends regarding deficiencies with Warners Blu-Rays.

I remember the caveats with Dark Knight and the IMAX compromise.

What are seen as reference Warner Blu-Rays? Harry Potter? Inception? Watchman?

Surely spreading each film across 2 50gb discs, Warners will go to town with the bitrate / encode?

Are there any precedents to support this? Or should we expect LOTR to be no different from other recent Warners discs?

Can you imagine Warner using two BD's and the leaving 20GB off the disc each time? LOL. I don't want to give people heart problems including myself but I hope they do these right.

WB sort of did that with Alexander The Final Cut. The movie was split onto two 25GB Blu-ray discs. It was done because HD DVD version was on two 30GB discs.

I agree

I was about to rip out my standard edition as I wanted to watch them again but know I will patiently await the month before I will watch the EE.

i think i'm going to have to wait for some sales on this. I don't need to see it day 1, and $85 for three moves is a bit much for me.

+1. Especially considering the numerous home video releases the movies have already seen (from VHS over DVD to Blu-ray).

I've had an urge to watch them lately too, but I'll just have to be patient and wait for the blu's as well.

My wife's been asking me if we could watch them. I told her that we need to wait.

It's getting close. I'm getting nervous.

They were shooting to film, which i'm sure was at least 16mm even for the extras. It was probably just cut and mastered in SD though.

I had a Mini-DV camcorder from Sony (model is HC42) that shot in 16:9 SD. Not letterboxed widescreen, but full 480p with wide pixels. I am sure the technology did exist in the Pro area before that.

Now, whether they shot in film or SD that's a question. But the equipment WAS available at the time.

Would it be too much to hope that these also include theatrical cuts using seamless branching?
