On the one hand, I'm optimistic due to the overwhelmingly negative reviews of the first Blu-ray release. It makes me think that maybe the studio will try a little harder to ensure that the EEs get a proper transfer and encode. On the other hand, when priced at $7/film, I'm sure they sold tons of them, justifying that perhaps the extra work isn't worth it because they made their money anyway.

In this case I would rather be pessimistic and wrong than be optimistic and wrong. With that said, I'm guessing these will have identical transfers, but different encodes. The studios will say something like, "See, check out the higher bit rate! Bit rate = better!" but then it will still be disappointing. Either that or we'll have a Gladiator (first release) situation where the extended scenes are razor sharp and unprocessed and the theatrical portions will be garbage.

Wait and see, I know, I know...

We're talking about Warner here. I think you're being too optimistic with the increased bit rate speculation.

My prediction is a remaster with lossless track and no DNR without color timing changes but no seamless branching on a 50 Gig disk for each film. I also predict the same extras included with the DVD's and some HD extras (expected promo) also.

My point was that even if they did increase the bit rate, it would only be a PR move since the underlying transfer is really what needs help, and that they would try to make it a selling point in "some circles".

I would think they would need to start with a new transfer than the TE anyway since it is a different cut of the movie entirely. Who knows if they will avoid the same mistakes twice. Even if they released the specs today of an all new transfer we would have to wait to actually see it to know if they still managed to screw it up again!

Sounds great. Do you think on one disc or will they split it?

Hmmmm, my prediction is the triple dip. They will release a relatively crappy version (or equavalent to the TE relaease) of the EE trilogy to "satisfy the demads of the LOTR fans", then in a year or two release a decent transfer as "remastered" and charge an arm and a leg for it. I could also see a quadruple dip, remastered version with seamless branching.

I bet someone from the studio is reading this and stealing all my ideas...

I think your spot on there. Maybe the third will have the movie on separate discs if there not separate on this upcoming release

Welp.. I've held out even watching them on BR because of all the terrible reviews. I'll watch EE regardless but I hope that either with this release or somewhere down the road they remaster these and give us the PQ that LOTR deserves.

Shoveled it out the door they did. Unfortunately, audio-/video-philes don't buy the bulk of the Blu-rays, nor do we move the marketplace that much. Even more unfortunately is that the reviewers seem to be, in large part, either asleep or ... continuing the metaphor ... in bed with the studios.

Updated from amazon listing:

15 Discs Total: Films are on Blu-ray, with Special Features on DVDs

so what are the other 3 discs? the ony thing added here is the Costa Botes special feature. That still leaves 2 discs since the digital copies are downloaded.

I don't give a rat's patootie about the extras; I only care about the PQ and SQ of the movies.

Jeff

Why would there be 4 discs per movie? The DVD version was split into 2 per movie.

On the EE DVDs, you had four discs per title: two discs for the film and two discs of extras.

That's right he said "So what are the other 3 discs. " I'm only suggesting that those extra discs could be blu ray which could mean the movies are split into 2 discs.

For a total of 12 discs (3 movies x 4 discs).

It's a 15 disc set.

So what are the other three discs?

No worries, I know how it is... Sometimes I look at a word like "separate" 12 times, and even when it's spelled right, it looks wrong...

It could be the DVD extras and HD extra content on the three disk.
  1. Special Gollum Collectors disk
  2. National geographic special
  3. HD extras disk (expected promotion)
