It's funny how these movies change studios. That was a Warner dvd. One of the 1st released non-anamorphic. This should be a pretty massive jump in PQ compared to the 98 letterbox dvd.

Maybe Warners for the US market and Fox had the International rights as they co-financed it? Just taking a guess here.

Correct.

Well, I guess I'll put off streaming this one on Netflix and hope they pick up the BD should a US version appear. When it was just out on a crappy DVD version, streaming didn't seem like a bad option. However, if Netflix is nice enough to pick up the BD, that's definitely the way to go.

I've never seen it, so I'm not sure if it's something I would want to own.

I have a brief review here, with DVD thumbnails: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...5#post18992065

The PAL anamorphic DVD is a good upgrade over the old North American disc. Looking forward to reviews of the BR.

Fox's international DVD looks real good of LADYHAWKE...I hope this is the start of them releasing other titles they control in foreign markets, including CONAN THE BARBARIAN. Would love to see them handle that as opposed to Universal!

Hong Kong is Region A but I believe the last few Warners releases i.e Demolition Man, Cobra were Region A,B,C. But being this is coming from Fox in Hong Kong I don't know yet.

Time will tell other than it will be Region A for sure.

The film is pretty good, but the musical score is controversial, to say the least. I don't think I could watch it again.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
The film's score was composed by Andrew Powell and produced by Alan Parsons. Richard Donner stated that he was listening to The Alan Parsons Project (on which Powell collaborated) while scouting for locations, and became unable to separate his visual ideas from the music. Powell combined traditional orchestral music and Gregorian chants with contemporary progressive rock-infused material, to controversial effect. It has been cited as the most memorable example of the growing trend among 1980s fantasy films of abandoning the lush orchestral scores of composers such as John Williams and James Horner in favour of a modern pop/rock sound. The soundtrack album was released in 1985 and re-released with additional tracks in 1995.

A lot of people don't care for the modern pop/synth character of the soundtrack in a movie with a medieval setting. Personally, I like the soundtrack, but I'm an Alan Parsons fan. If you don't have an issue with a medieval setting backed by something that sounds like Alan Parsons, there's a good chance you'll like it. However, it bugs the hell out of some people.

I love the soundtrack and own the CD which is OOP and very expensive (I paid $50.00 for it). I was a kid when we went to see the film at the theater and I was like "who is that woman?" I was in love with her at first sight and it was one of Michelle Pfeiffer's earliest movie roles.

Slightly! On amazon, ebay and everywhere else $50.00 is a steal as the unopened cd can fetch $80.00-$150.00! Oh, and I mean obtaining it legally just in case he found it "another way" If he got the legitimate CD then he scored bigtime.

Yeah, one would assume like POLTERGEIST II and a lot of MGM titles it's going to be the same everywhere...though since WB owns the title in North America it'll be a different release altogether (different encode too I would imagine) if it ever comes out here.

Looking forward to importing. Does anyone have it up for pre-order yet?

If you don't mind waiting a month you can probably save some cash by ordering the German version from Grooves-inc -- free shipping and pretty low prices. I ordered Babe Pig in the City for $15 shipped and Flight of the Navigator for $20 shipped. Ladyhawke isn't up there yet but I'm going to keep an eye out for it.

I love this movie, and I liked the soundtrack a lot too, but I'm a big Alan Parsons fan. I actually think they should re-score it though, it'd be a great example of how the score can affect a movie in different ways. It would still be a great movie, but it would feel differently I think.

I've never ordered overseas. Is there anything I should know about doing so? Should I just wait?

Thanks!

It's funny, a lot of people think the score is incredibly dated. I think only some of it is -- a lot of it is orchestral and has a really strong theme. There are only a few places (the main titles in particular) where the music is jarringly "pop" and could have been arranged a little less "contemporary" so to speak.

I honestly never could figure out why some people have such a problem with the score...? For those looking for a strict period piece, it is not appropriate, I agree. But for a fun mixture of old-school and contemporary, it works quite well. Then again, most of the people I know who dislike the mix also dislike the same kind of thing in "A Knight's Tale" (which also worked IMO). It was always Donner's intent to go for something different, as opposed to, say, "Legend", where Goldsmith's score was replaced domestically by a pop score to appeal more to a younger audience (completely against Scott's wishes). In the case of Ladyhawke, the "contemporary" score is precisely what sets it apart from every other vanilla fantasy movie out there with a traditional orchestral one.

Peace... Vader
