Definitely in. I had the Gettysburg director's cut on laserdisc, which developed laser rot. Dunno if I'm as jazzed about the G & G double dip. Maybe the extra footage will make it a better film.

Maybe this time when I try to watch G&G I'll just skip the the turgid and soul-draining dialog and just go from one battle scene to the next. I've never made it to the end of this movie before.

Gettysburg, on the other hand, I've seen a number of times, and already have triple-dipped (VHS, LD, DVD), so what's one more?

Wide Awake

on the Edge

of the World

I may tip dad to picking up Gettysberg. While no Glory, it was an entertaining adaptation of an awesome novel.

Gods and Generals, on the other hand, is a turgid mess that is utterly frustrating and embarrassing for an amateur Civil War historian like myself to watch more than once in a lifetime. The only reason I survived it in theatres was thanks to another enthusiast just as appalled as I, and she'd read the book.

if you want to READ what else is in G&G, there's a screenplay at the back of this book:

Gods and Generals: The Illustrated Story of the Epic Civil War Film (Newmarket Pictorial Moviebook)

paid like $5.17 from Amazon delivered for mine

a few of the deleted scenes were included on a DVD included with the Soundtrack back in 2003

just 1 more pair of KLIPSCH Classic speakers...

These historical war movies are like Science Fiction movies to me. I always appreciate seeing everything that was shot on film to see a little bit more of the world and events they portray. The length is not a problem to me, thats why the tech gods invented the pause and or fast forward buttons on the remote if you are so inclined.

That's exactly how I feel. Even when I don't think the film is that great as a whole (Like G&G) I still can't wait to finally see the extended cut. For such long movies like this or Gone With The Wind for example, I tend to treat the films as if reading a book. I don't need to read a whole book in just one sitting. Nor do I have to watch a 4+ hour film in just one sitting. These type of films remind me of the various and wonderful mini series that TV used to produce. It's like watching a novel, if that makes sense.

I saw Gods... theatrically - first film with an intermission that I'd been to in as long as I can remember - with my uncle, who's a Civil War buff; his commentary greatly enhanced my appreciation of the film. I can't imagine that they cut an hour of footage, but, with some trepidation, I already sold my theatrical BD in anticipation. Like others have said, it's not a film ideally suited for one setting - approach it more like a mini-series, like North & South. Though there are plenty of battles, it's anything but an action film - more of a docu-drama. Looking forward to Gettysburg too, as I don't recall ever seeing it in its entirety.

That said, I thought I saw some promotional material for the collector's set a while back that indicated the second disc is a dvd. If so, that doesn't bode well, especially for Gods...; hope it was innaccurate, as early info so often is.

Have to remember that GETTYSBURG was a TV mini-series -- conceived and shot as a mini-series for TNT -- and then Ted Turner decided to release it theatrically first. So this "Director's Cut" is a bit of an inaccurate statement -- it's more like the version it was always going to be before Turner decided to do a theatrical release, which meant bringing down the running time in the process.

Thanks for posting those clips! The Lincoln and Booth stuff surprised me. I wonder if the footage was stuff they had been saving for The Last Final Measure sequel that might never get made?

I watched Gods And Generals. I liked the added footage. I listened to the intro with the director and Ted Turner, the producer. The added footage was removed because cinemas demanded a 4 hour or less run-time, including the intermission. I usually hate it when moves are made longer but when you go from 3:40 to 4:40, what the hell's the difference? You go from a short mini-series to medium length mini-series... This a fact-based film and it has so many facts and battles to squeeze in.

Now, the down-side of the added footage, the BD looks bit-starved in a great many scenes. The extra hour squeezed onto a BD50 was a bad idea. This film should of been presented on 2 BD50's. It doesn't take long after the opening credits to start noticing the problems. When Thomas Jackson is teaching his artillery class there are artifacts on the blackboard behind him that look like cigar smoke. Is teacher smoking in class, no! There are many scenes that look soft and/or devoid of detail along the way to 4 hours and 40 minutes crushed into a single disc. The theatrical cut of the original BD looks better.

In real life I am Dot Mongur champion of the International Pacman Federation. I don't play the game, I operate it.....no dot is safe from me....

It got worse....the bit-rate is much too low. Gods And Generals isn't as well shot as Gettysburg. Losing any PQ is a big deal.

I got part way through Gettysburg today. It looks purr-dy good compared to Gods And Generals. I have an hour to go and will be finishing it later this evening.
