the HDTV rips floating around the internet are of roughly Back to the Future-ish caliber, and I'm guessing BHC isn't the kind of movie Paramount is going to give a shiny new transfer.

Apparently they're doing some special screenings of it in digital 4K projection. Maybe it's possible they made a new transfer.

From AMC's site:
"Fans of the film and newcomers alike can take in the digitally remastered classic for two shows only."

Sadly I'm not sure the two are connected (although I don't know why not). Since I saw the Sixteen Candles AMC showing in February and yet the blu-ray for that hasn't even had a hint of an announcement upcoming.

I do plan to check out Top Gun next weekend. It's cool to see this stuff on the big screen again (and cool that my local theater happens to have their digital link on their second largest screen, only their dMAX screen is a little larger).

That cover for Le Mans is bad ass. I already have a Bullitt poster up, now I have to look for an official movie poster for Le Mans that is similar to that cover.

Nasty, that is some bad DNR that makes the grain look like mush. Why is this stuff still going on? I don't understand why studios continue to filter their masters :/

I thought they just did a 2k for the new theatrical Top Gun release?

Looks like it did well enough to start that they have decided to extended to 7PM all week long now.

It was awesome seeing it on a huge screen.

Based on those screenshots at the BD forum, Beverly Hills Cops looks better than I expected given this is Paramount we're talking about. I'm not saying it looks great, just that it looks better than I expected as my expectations of a Paramount and Universal catalog title are typically at the bottom portion of your local sewer.

This looks like the sewer to me :/ This is 2011 and a lot of companies are rescanning everything including sony
which is rescanning everything in 4K. Even if they were going work with an old master why in the world would
anyone think that dnr would look good.

Example:

There is a scratch at some one place in the film, or some scene had soft focus. Can it be "fixed"? Is it a problem with the DVD that are "distracting" artifacts or is it MPEG2 noise or actual grain? Was thought to this given when they made the master? A master can contain post-processing also before it is sent off to be encoded to the format. The film maker may have no idea what the Master looks like and the place that might encode the bu-ray may be even more confused. That can't be fixeed so can there be a re-master? The answer is almost always no, then something is assumed, processed, and then released, with DNR.

Well yes if the DNR is baked into the master then that master screwed yes. Warner does this to every movie, they do all of their post processing to their masters :/ Maybe this is an old Master Paramount did this to:/ does the dvd look this way if so then you are probably right.

I never said that, ever. It is safer to not assume that if the DVD looking like that means that the master is ruined. It is safest to assume that the DNR is a result of confusion between film maker and the studio, or between other parties.

well all I was saying was that some Studios and its hard to believe this but they actually do their post processing to their masters so that once they do the post processing its permanent. Warner does this but I don't know if Paramount does I was just saying if this were true than the Blu-ray would obviously look this way if they were using the same master.

Why they would do that has been a mystery to me since the first year of laser disk.

A lot of studios are NOT rescanning everything. Some are depending on the title, but I am willing to bet most Blu-ray catalog titles that have been released in the last couple of years are not rescanned and just existing HD masters which is why most Blu-ray catalogs, while looking better than on other formats, are still far from perfect.

Where did you hear that? I guarantee you that Godzilla wasn't rescanned or remastered. If I took a few minutes, I could probably list a couple dozen other Sony BDs just from my own collection.

Ugh. BHC looks absolutely horrid, but, as with Scream, most 'reviewers' are gonna see an image filled with grain/noise and give it a pass, with the usual lazy caveat of 'this film isn't supposed to look like Avatar'. But the thing is, it's not supposed to look like someone's gone crazy with photoshop's watercolour filter either.

I know people around here LOVE to rag on Warners, and while their stuff isn't spectacular it's solid enough for me, while Paramount (and Universal) continue to vomit up outrageously awful platters like BHC. Sony are putting everyone to shame at the moment.

After reading all the posts in this thread about how terrible BHC looks, I was expecting PredatorUHE, but BHC does not look bad in those few screenshots. I don't have a membership, so I'm only seeing the compressed 720p shots, but it looks about how I expected it to look. I mean, for an 80s buddy-action-comedy, I'm not sure what people are expecting? It looks soft, not smudged; coarse, not fine. I'll withhold judgement until I see A) better screenshots or B) Netflix rental, whichever comes first. In either case, it sure looks like a big step up from the DVD!

EDIT: I just checked out the 1080p screenshots. Something is wrong here. I'm going to have to rent it to know for sure. I suspect that the capture method may even be the culprit as there is strange distortion along the edges of some of the screenshots themselves that usually aren't visible in most screenshots. Perhaps someone forgot to turn off his GPU "enhancement" settings...?

EDIT#2: See next post.
