I've waited a long time but perhaps my favorite film of all time appears to be on it's way, a 6K restoration bodes well.

It's nice, but I'll wait for an edition (maybe UK) without the "big box of stuff".

Perhaps like The Ten Commandments they'll have the "movie only" simple box.

This is one of my all time favorite movies and I have been waiting for the Blu-ray to come along. I am really looking forward to this one.

PETER JACKSON: The theatrical versions are the definitive versions.

But unlike "The ten commandments", they'll probably include the same disc content in the regular release (like they did on with Oz and GwtW). Paramount is just using dirty tricks.

"Next fall..." meaning 2012? Hopefully we get Lawrence next year too (since it's the 50th anniversary anyway). I really wish the movie was split across two BD50s, but I suppose Warner proved themselves capable of a quality encode on Gone With the Wind

WOOT! Let's just hope they don't wreck it. A lot more Ten Commandments and a lot less Spartacus, please!

The current post on Digital Bits says this fall. It's supposedly a 50th Anniversary release, although that was last year. I can see releases being announced 1 year out (see also: Star Wars), but not almost two years. So, I'm guessing 2011.

Agreed, that makes me mad. I don't want the 10C box set of trinkets but I would want all of the disc content, not just some. I can see Warner having maybe an exclusive single disc like they did with those two titles along with the box, and a little later having all the disc content available in the smaller package, except in the UK where everything will be available in a small package from the start. This is just speculation basing on Warner's previous patterns.

What a great experience this will be for those of you who have a dedicated home theater!

Use your light dimmers during the overture...your large curtains slowly opening at the main title appears...And, all your resources that will recreate the experience of a first night premiere...(and, have an audience!)

Alas, nothing will ever quite replicate seeing this film in 70mm in a 60's roadshow house SPECIFICALLY BUILT for Ben-hur. People actually called it the "Ben-hur theatre" until The Sound of Music ran there several years later.

People who did not experience this sort of presentation really don't know what they are missing.

No, Blu-ray (with all its quality) doesn't make it.

I generally do not purchase these extreme editions but with this film, I may make an exception. Can't wait until this fall.

...true...I saw it when it first opened in LA at the Egyptian Theater...I never saw such a large screen!...however, it is still better than seeing it on a 10" black and white set...

I wish I could have been part of that but even if my age had made it possible I'd never have seen it.

I'd actually have liked to have experienced a Saturn V liftoff too.

The Blu-ray release of Ben-Hur should be wonderful, but the film deserves at least a limited theatrical run in 70mm or 4k.

However wonder the Blu-ray might be, it will still be akin to a black & white Xerox of an illuminated manuscript, or possibly a paperback edition of a beautifully produced tome, when compared to the real thing.

Nothing against the concept of Blu-ray, which is wonderful, but it is not a replacement for the real thing, and the real thing can be made available. No need for time travel.

Especially if it can be shown in the full AR. I was too young to be aware of such things when I first saw it in London at the Empire in 1960. All the 70mm reissues since then have been 2.20:1

According to IMDB the ratio is 2.76:1 (wider than Cinerama.)

And 2.50:1 is "recommended." According to Widescreen Museum "The chariot race as seen in the full 2.76:1 70mm aspect ratio. Ben-Hur's spectacular photography was matched with its extremely vivid 6 channel stereophonic sound. For practical reasons, the film was shown with an aspect ratio of about 2.5:1 in most roadshow houses."

Still, the Blu-ray will probably be 2.76:1.

Movies must be OAR, sports and movies must also have 5.1 audio, No EE or NO SALE!
