I hope that's true. I doubt I would ever notice the quality loss from scaling. Cropping seems like the greater of two evils.

In the examples I saw (this was a couple years ago) the quality loss was about as obvious as going from 1080p to 720p -- obvious on some material on some displays at some distance. But hard to see when further away or looking at something that wasn't sharp and detailed to begin with.
