I always assumed the Blu-ray release would be timed alongside the release of the remake/reboot, but now that the remake/reboot is officially moving forward as an original story about "Captain Nemo", I have my doubts.

If you're desperate, you could always buy the iTunes version in 1080p.

Spoiler!

Thanks for the heads-up, I previously only knew of the Bryan Singer remake project.

I think we'll get it as a Disney Movie Club exclusive like the other classics, unless the new films move forward, which would likely bring us a wide release. Either way, I want it!

my hope, but I'm not betting on it, would be an ideal UHD release title since the restoration was done in 4K.

The problem with this movie is that every version that I have seen has horrible colors and detail, even the online streaming versions. This movie deserves a remaster before it is released in high def. Every Disney color movie released in the 1950s and 60s had terrible video transfers.

If it's not a BIG screen, it's not a theater...

The 2012 restoration was 4K and the original sound elements were also remastered to make them fresher and clearer, while retaining the original theatrical sound that hadn't ever been heard on home video. The previous restoration used for the DVD release was 2K.

Do you have a link-able source for this? FWIW, the Disney gent who managed the restoration describes it as "4K" in his linkedin resume.

Not without a source, I'm afraid. If you were involved in the restoration and you are the source, then yes. Also, I thought most 4K scans were done at 12-bit or higher.

The people who did the work say it was 4K, as do all of Disney's press releases regarding the matter. The matter is settled, unless you can provide evidence to the contrary.
