A new German release of TPW came out a few months ago - supposed to be a big improvement over the prior DNR'd version. It comes with an English DTS-HD MA track. I ordered today and will report back after it arrives and I view it.

Go Duke !

If the original elements are still missing, then it too will be an upconvert from PAL video masters. I have a hunch they just don't want to have to re-do the visual effects for HD, so any other excuse will do.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

I am sure you're right - but the Amazon version of Season 4 looks quite nice at 1080p on my Samsung E7000 - I assume this new release will be even better.

TPW was shot and done in digital HD. Panavision Genesis, if I remember correctly.

But were the visual effects rendered at HD level? Firefly, a more recent TV show than Farscape, used SD grade effects. They had to go back and upscale those elements for HD discs and syndicated broadcasts. Not an expense studios are always willing to pay for.

Based on what I read in the VFX mags, they apparently did everything in HD. They had eight months to do the work and a feature-level budget to work with, so I doubt they did it in SD. I don't know how the German Blu-Ray of the mini-series looks, so I can't say anything more.

Mine arrived from Germany but a friend wants to watch it with me and we can't get together until weekend after this one, so it will be a bit before I can report on quality. That will give me time to watch the last episode of Season 4 this weekend and re-orient.

Go Duke !

I watched Part 1 of the new German release of TPW - CGI scenes are definitely SD and looked worse than Amazon streaming. On the other hand, the film portions are quite good, with some variance, but generally show considerable detail and contrast. All in all, it's a good transfer.

Sound was very good for a TV show with decent bass extension.

How so, could you provide some more details? Does the blurriness of the stream help the FX not stand out as much? Does the clarity of the transfer exacerbate the faults? Too much aliasing on the Blu-ray? If the filmed parts look better, but the FX look worse, then that makes me think the transfer is doing its job.

I was watching with a friend just to enjoy the content, so I didn't have a real eye for video details. That said, the film parts are definitely superior - the CGI scenes look blurry, and lack color saturation. But the film stuff was sometimes razor sharp and very colorful - like a close up of Chianna with her new eyes. Some film scenes were less impressive, esp. the darker ones, but still pretty good. I didn't notice aliasing, which suggests it's minimal. Generally, I was quite satisfied with the transfer. Equipment was a Panny BDP 220 and a Pio 151.

All in all, it sounds like an improvement over TPW DVD, thanks!

Trackman,

Did you order your version off of Amazon Germany? How long did it take? I ordered mine ( off Amazon Germ.) back on the 1/5/15, but nothing yet. I just got an e-mail with my invoice, and it stated that they couldn't provide tracking.

Well, I finally got my Blu Ray. I only watched 5 minutes, but it is definitely an improvement over the DVD. I would agree with the previous comments on the picture quality. For right now, I need to watch the whole thing, the Blu Ray was worth the $23 that it cost me.

No - I ordered it straight from the German store via Ebay. Shipping was fast - it arrived in only a week!
