A guilty pleasure is something one enjoys and considers pleasurable despite feeling guilt for enjoying it. The "guilt" involved is sometimes simply fear of others discovering one's lowbrow or otherwise embarrassing tastes. Fashion, video games, music,[1] movies[2], and junk food can be examples of guilty pleasures.

The Naked Gun was a hugely successful mainstream film. It did fantastic box office grossing about 80 million dollars on a 12 million dollar budget. Critics loved it. Fans love it. It rates 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. It regularly shows up in list of all time best comedies and spawned three successful sequels over the next 6 years.

It is the very epitome of a big, popular, comedy franchise.

NOBODY has ever worried about the "fear of others discovering" that they love THE NAKED GUN. Pretty much everybody does. It's a great shared experience.

The term "guilty pleasure" is not used to used to describe successful, acclaimed, popular, blockbusters.

I see that Naked Gun has a decent transfer and the others are only "eh." PT&A sounds like it came down with a case of the DNR blues.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

Exactly.

There's no reason to feel guilty about liking "The Naked Gun".

Now, "Hercules in New York" would be a guilty pleasure. I watch that movie purely for the scene where Arnold fights a guy in a bear suit.

Just because something is popular doesn't exclude it from being a guilty pleasure. The feeling of guilt is a personal experience and is therefore completely subjective per individual. If someone was accustomed to watching only "high brow" dark comedies, for example, he might see the slapstick of Naked Gun as "low brow" and feel guilty for enjoying something outside his comfort zone.

It all depends on where you set your bar.

I find videos of cats talking like humans on YouTube hilarious, so I find Naked Gun to be genious.

Exactly right Dex, that's why I asked him why he called it a "guilty" pleasure. I guess it can mean different things to different people, but when someone posts that in a discussion about film, relating it to a movie that was both a commercial and critical success isn't going to make sense to 99.9% of people reading it.
