Looks like a repackage

Paramount and Warner really need to sort out this lossy nonsense

Every time one of these is announced, another little chip breaks off of my soul. Each repackaging of obsolete materials just means that much longer before a worthy release will arrive.

I don't feel special...

It's not like it's an important anniversary or anything

I don't think anyone outside of the studios actually cares about whatever anniversary they plaster all over the box- we just want a quality release and every time they repackage the old crap, we just have to suck up a couple more years before we can hope to see any improvement.

I don't feel special...

Same transfer, but now in a digibook?

I like digibook versions more, but why didn't they release it in a digibook in the first place?

Very disappointing...

The proper setting for sharpness is always0.
Also my Oppo BDP-103D is region free.
That makes me awesome.

come on warner, give this one a new transfer. you seem to like this film. it must have sold well to warrant another release on home video.

you got away with making the first release pretty sh*tty. old dated master, lossy audio etc.

give it a new scan and all us suckers will buy it again. you know we will.

but what incentive is there currently ? a repackage job isn't exactly hitting the bulls-eye for me.

A digibook blu-ray with a lossy soundtrack. Would this be the first?

Enjoy your halfway-HD packaged media in a premium package, you poor sap consumer.

I think we need to pay Warner Home Video a visit and choke some bitches. It would seem that no matter how much progress they make going forward, they just keep rolling on back. This film deserves a fresh transfer and re-master for archival purposes and loss-less audio. Ya dig?

They did the same with Goodfellas and Bonnie & Clyde.

Bought this on VHS, widescreen VHS, DVD, special edition DVD and finally Blu-Ray, and it was an upgrade every time. Since this is not an upgrade in quality compared to the last release, I guess I'll pass on this one.

PETER JACKSON: The theatrical versions are the definitive versions.

Yes, this lazy repackaging is infuriating. Next year is the 20th anniversary, it was a Best Picture winner, it's on the AFI Top 100 list, and it's a very popular film among many people. And they still didn't bother to invest any money in an audio/video upgrade.

I guess George Feltenstein doesn't consider this a classic, but I sure as hell do.

Someone on blu-ray.com noticed that the back of the digibook says "newly restored" for its 20th anniversary...
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Unforgiven-Blu-ray/33582/

Has WB said anything like that about their other repackages?

I dunno but with the audio specs still saying dolby digital I'd say the odds of a new transfer (or even reencoding) aren't looking very good.

If the transfer is done well and I notice the difference I'll rebuy it regardless of lossless audio or not. I can get around that. The image quality is what disappoints me more than anything. If they do just re-release the same disc as before but charge more for it because of packaging, well lol, I feel for the fool that falls for it. I'd rather them focus on giving us a new transfer than a fancy digibook packaging.

I can't believe they would do a new transfer and not put lossless audio on there, so probably one of them is wrong. Most likely the part about the restoration.

I watched the original version last night and there is definitely noticeable DNR and edge enhancement. Source material seems good. Does anyone know for sure if this re-release is the same encode?

I have the HD DVD and the Blu-ray R2B upgrade, so this release would have to get everything right to earn a triple dip.
