This maybe the biggest waste of star studded cast in history of cinema. Great premise and story but the trailer looked exactly something from Hallmark or Lifetime channel...pass!

Saw this one free courtesy of gofobo.
Bigtime made for cable feel. I'm not sure if I'd even call it a rental.

More info on this. I tried this disc in another player (toshiba) and the disc loads and plays. The Oppo BD-80 has the latest firmware 12-24-11 and will not play the disc. I'll email Oppo.

I popped my copy in my Oppo 83, and it played, at least it got past the menu and to the WB symbol. Didn't watch it, since I'm saving it for Saturday.

For both the BDP-80 and -83, try this procedure: What do I do if a Blu-ray disc will not load or play, or if it freezes the player?

Resetting Factory Defaults is optional; a last resport. Turning off BD-Live, clearing Persistent Storage, and rebooting is important.

If the complete procedure doesn't work, contact OPPO.

7th year of the format: BD-Java is ever young.

Thanks for the info - I'll give this a shot. I actually didn't like the movie enough to keep it so I'll have to try it tonight before I ship it out.

As an FYI this disc hosed my box to the point I had to hold the power button in until the machine powered down. Hitting any buttons and trying to eject had no effect.

Performed factory reset on my Oppo 83 SE and turned off BD Live, cleared Persistent Memory and the unit would not play Contagion. Just "Locked Up" and I had to hold the power off button then ejected the disc.

Played the same disc in my PS3 with NO issues. Called Oppo and they said they are aware of the issue.

Why pay a premium for this deck if it's not going to be able to play newly released discs.

See the FAQ for background: Why does the player need firmware updates before it will play certain Blu-ray discs?

This was from early in the life of the player but it is still generally applicable. OPPO has been rather good with disc compatibility updates but the studios don't make it easy.

According to the DVDFab forum this is new BD+ protection http://forum.dvdfab.com/showthread.php?t=16009. They are getting out beta software now.

Confusingly, the title exists in several versions which apparently have different protection schemes.

It played fine in my 83SE with the latest firmware. If you recently updated or will update the firmware, be sure to do a factory reset. I also had to turn BD Live on for this disk. If you have a multi-region mod, be sure to make sure you start up in Region A, even though I am pretty sure the disc is region-free.

It played without issue on my OPPO 83. Our family really liked this movie. Terrific use of the Red Camera and still looked very film-like.

It played fine in my two year old Samsung. I, who like very few movies these days, thought this one was terrific. Everything about it worked. Hallmark? I don't think so. Captain America? No, and that's a good thing. Well done drama with suspense? Absolutely. Could it happen just like the film posits? Absolutely. Would the public behave as the people in the film do? Absolutely and worse. And since no one ever actually seems to discuss quality in these threads, which is what they should really be about, the disc is stellar in both transfer and audio.

It's a decent movie, but so paint-by-numbers. It introduces some great ideas that go absolutely nowhere:

The Jude Law blogger character is useless. He's not uncovering anything and is just an extension of the general human population going berserk. The woman captured by the Chinese for the cure is left open, because how is she going to get the vaccine to help anybody when she goes back? Matt Damon is immune for plot convenience just so he can freely wander the streets.

Once they've found a cure, the whole movie becomes as generic as these killer virus movies can be. Why not let it run rampant and kill us? That's fear. Why not show it sourced by a government agency? Why not do something that hasn't been seen before? It's well done as far as these movies go, but does nothing special.

I thought this movie was pretty good - if you want ensemble fail, go see New Years Eve, that's a bowel movement on film.

Its not the player's fault if the studios make a flakey disc.
I haven't updated my Oppo 83's firmware in ages, and I'm probably 2 upgrades behind, and haven't had any problems whatsoever.
J

PS Watched the movie last night-mediocre. We watched it mainly to see if they got the technical aspects right as apposed to to earlier epidemic movies.

A bit disappointed after watching this weekend. Many of the characters and subplots go nowhere. However, it is very realistic in so much as the world reaction, etc.

Right, but he's clearly going to get caught in the future, so paying bond doesn't do him any good. Plus, he's going to have people after him after family members took it and it didn't work. Surely some of them will sue him too. There's no real finality with the character.

Is there anybody out there who wants to talk about the 5 dollar difference between the "1 disc movie only" version and the 2 disc version that has "Special features"....

Like most of the new warner discs that have this do this! WTF! So far they did this on "the Hangover" and a few other ones...... And i'm a sucker for the extra features and can care less for the "Ultraviolet" and the digital copy.....
