On of my all time favourite films is finally coming to Blu-Ray. Please, please let the transfer not be a DNR tragedy.

French releases as tricky, they love forced French subtitles.
Spizz's Avatar Spizz 03:03 PM 01-20-2012
Thats why I'm also hoping it gets a US announcement for around the same time.
Geoff D's Avatar Geoff D 03:41 PM 01-20-2012
Hmmm. I wouldn't worry about forced subs because this is a Fox release, so this disc will be destined for more than one country, I'm sure. Could be expensive to import from France though, so I'll wait for the UK/US version which shouldn't be too long in coming.

Great news nonetheless, I love this movie.

Is this the remake currently being filmed off the Tuscany coast?

The Euro is at a low, so it's actually cheaper to import than before. Try to order when they have one of their rebate sales and order enough titles to amortise the high shipping cost, then it's not so bad.

Forced subs and region locking just encourage rips: don't the studios understand that yet?

If it's indeed a Fox/Pathe release, there will be no forced subtitles, even of the title is produced for France only.

Hackman's disowned the film, so he deserves whatever's coming to him re: the cover.

This was the first PG movie I ever saw in the theaters. Will pick this up, if the reviews are good.

The tweak to the gamma may offend some people, but taken on its own merits the Euro Blu-ray looks really nice. There is a little bit of compression noise here and there, but that could well be the jpg caps.

Me wantee!

Since the more boosted shots are supposed to be outdoors in bright sunlight, not too bad. The interior shots on the DVD looked flat and washed out. Better on the Blu it seems.

Looks promising pq wise.

"There's almost no visible film grain on this Blu-ray"

I see film grain in every cap. Another reviewer that needs glasses.

Fox is notorious for cover spoilers.

Two others off the top of my head were "Planet of the Apes" and "The Other".

Watching it now. Looks fine, save for some servings of teal...
Geoff D's Avatar Geoff D 01:31 PM 04-16-2012
This does look good for the most part, with excellent blacks and a spotless image. But facial textures are strangely soft looking, and there's some smearing on the steps right at the start as the kid tries to make his way up to the bridge. Grain is finely textured, perhaps a bit too fine for something of this vintage.

Add all that up and it doesn't mean a great deal, but factor in the Lowry process (see page 4 here: http://www.lowrydigital.com/EPK.pdf) and it all becomes clear: I reckon it's been degrained and had the grain put back over the top, as per Lowry's usual MO. Thankfully there's none of the frozen grain nastiness that plagues the Bond films and the Star Wars OT, with the only stumble being that aforementioned shot of the smearing steps.

Don't get me wrongo, it really does look good. But there's something ever so slightly off about it which I found distracting. YMMV.

any problems finding this in walmart stores? it's been showing either as "unavailable at this time" or "out of stock" on their web site for past 2 weeks

have an exclusive and not have it in stock....pretty good retailing

that's what I suspected

why these studios think exclusive arrangements will gain them a particular advantage is a mystery to me. think how many they might have sold on amazon & other places by now.

stupid to give any retailer an exclusive who won't carry it in stock the very week it's released

o well, as much as I'd like to have this on BD, there are plenty of other titles to buy. I'm not wasting my time driving around Atlanta to try to find it. I can wait until these idiots decide to carry something they were given.

I never have liked walmart...for anything! just reinforces why I don't shop there.

as much as I don't like shopping BB, I have to give them credit...all the stores in my area have the 2 BD exclusives that came out about the same time as PA - The Ring & French Connection remaster. They at least honor their exclusive by actually trying to have them for people to buy....a novel idea!

maybe within a few months the studio will get tired of seeing poor sales & cancel walmart's exclusive so they can actually sell some

Thing is there are two Poseidon Adventure remakes so the one on the pdf list may not be the original.

One of them is just titled "Poseidon", and of the three only the 1972 film is distributed by Fox.

Yup. The Warners attempt was simply called Poseidon. So that leaves the classic 1972 movie or the TV version starring Steve Guttenberg. Wuther, do you really think that the TV version is the one on Lowry's list?
