I'm going to say it's going to be similar to Avatar and Transformers 3. Release a bare-bones version out first to make people happy, and then a special edition with a full disc of bonus features ~6 months later.

I'm very pleased with this release coming so soon after the movie hit theatres. Unless there's a rumoured Director's Cut Edition like Zodiac I'll pick it up day one.

Only a commentary? tssss... I'd prefer not buying it twice. Let's hope a more 'complete' edition is on the way.

Modus operandi seems to tell me a SE will be released to tie into part 2's theatrical release in a couple years.

Watched this one last night on Blu-ray. Had seen the original movie/trilogy and this remake compares favorably although I still think it was a completely unnecessary remake. I much prefer Noomi Rapace in the role over Rooney Mara but I will say Rooney was excellent in the role, I just preferred Noomi. I though Daniel Craig was a lot better than I expected as Blomkvist. I will say I almost had my hopes dashed this would be a decent redo with the opening James Bond-like credits sequence w/Trent Reznor's (who I otherwise really like) awful cover of Led Zep's Immigrant Song, fortunately the rest of the movie wasn't nearly so cheesy. I do give Reznor (or whoever chose the song) props for including long-forgotten 80's band Belfegore's song "All That I Wanted" early in the film.

The presentation of the film on blu-ray is excellent although the photography doesn't seem to be up to Fincher's typical level seen on most of his previous films.

All the extras except Fincher's commentary are on the 2nd disc.

I am shocked that there are a ton of different disc labels in each set!
Anyone know how many versions there are?

I've seen all versions of all the various movies currently available and do generally agree with you. There were some things that I liked better about the US version of the film and with Mara's portrayal of Lisbeth, but there were other things I liked better in the Swedish version, and with Lisbeth being portrayed by Rapace.

If I were forced to give up one version or the other, I'd probably let go of the US version first, as I'm quite proud of the extended Swedish version.

Watched it. Enjoyed it. Did not see originals.

Like Mara and Craig.

What a great soundtrack though some dialog got a bit hidden in the background.
Picture was well above e average but unnecessarily dark in some scenes. Gorgeous colors, blacks.

Thought this movie rocked, it ain't perfect but I enjoyed it far more than the Swedish version. The AV quality of the Blu-ray release is about as good as it gets. It's not primo demo material, but it's an entirely faithful rendition of Fincher's film. Superb roster of extras too, not to mention the kooky packaging.

Different strokes. I liked the US version better all the way around myself. And I loved the Reznor Immigrant song . Having watched TGWTDT on Friday night, I found myself putting on, er, queuing up LZ III last night as I was cooking dinner to hear the Zep version. And then after hearing the song Tangerine there, I had to pull up the Big Head Todd version of it just for the heck of it. Vive la difference!

I liked it and would say it equaled the original except Craig was flat compared to Michael Nyqvist. He dropped the ball and if I were to give the original Swedish a 10/10, I would give Fincher's version a 9/10... due to Craig. Then again I think CLive Owen would blow Craig out of the water as Bond given the chance and possibly in the Blomkvist role. It seemed to me the Fincher "Americanized" version took the violence/sex a step further and I thought the original was shocking. The rest of it seemed to be as captivating as the original SWedish.

yes, his straight up British accent...I wonder if Fincher/they thought the accent sounded like an accent for the sake of having one, so it would fly, but it contrasted at times.

I agree, I don't think Craig is the right guy for this role. Nyqvist made the character much more human and believable. He also had the benefit of coming first, which sort of "cemented" who the character was for me. Ditto for Noomi Rapace.

here's an odd question. rented this in br format from redbox.

come home and start watching it and minutes after the film started i notice the pq was quite soft and lacked the punch i usually see on a br transfer.

the prior posts indicate, i believe, the u.s. br release is a quality transfer, but what i saw on the screen was very low tier in terms of pq.

i pulled the disc out and there was no br logo anywhere. started the film up from the beginning again and nothing in the opening credits indicates it is a br.

i don't have the equip to test the disc, but to my eyes, this was either or poor br transfer or someone swapped a br copy out with an sd dvd.

am i missing something here?

The DVD copy is intentionally designed to look like a DVD-R with the title written in Sharpie, so unless that's the case with what you got, you're watching the BD.

is that on the case that comes with the disc or on the disc itself. redbox only gives you the disc so all that i could read was that little sticker they put at the very middle of the disc. usually there's a br logo on those stickers but the one i received definitely did not have one.

already returned to redbox and they gave me a credit so really no harm done,
