Well, at 24 fps, there is going to be motion blur, period, regardless of the year of release. At best a tv will not create additional problems, only accurately render what was originally shot. Of course, there are some tv's with frame interpolation, but I'm not talking about that here.

I'm not even sure if I want frame interpolation, although I've spent very little time watching any programming or films using this feature. I'd rather see films shot at a higher frame rate, rather than having my tv guess what those additional images would look like.

Could someone who knows, list the special features available on the standard version for USA and UK in detail?

The reviewers seem to have been given the Best Buy version and its skewing the results, making it impossible to tell what actual extra benefit is derived from BB. Being an international enthusiast, it will cost a lot to obtain the BB version, so I want to make sure it will be worthwhile.

Motion blur?!

Motion blur is not gate weave. I was responding to your comment about gate weave- a very different thing.

That is where I first noticed it and after re-watching the entire movie looking for other instances, this was by far the most noticeable to me.

I am seeing macro blocking at other points in the movie, but I feel as if I really have to look for it. Not so with the scene mentioned above. I actually said WTF, and had to reverse and watch it again it was so noticeable.

Watched the BB Edition on an Oppo BDP93 at 110" using an Anthem LTX300V LCOS projector.

that exact fade-up is where i saw the most macroblocking on my new Sony 590. Overall I also felt i had to look for other instances of macroblocking and when i saw any they were minor, but that particular fade definitely was blocky.

Well I hosted my screening over the weekend and in short, top grade stuff! I saw none of the video issues that have been previously discussed by others nor any of my own. I thought sure I'd get something during the sandstorm but I'm glad to report, I didn't. As far as audio is concerned, all I can say is 'car wreck after flipping over Ethan'! Very aggressive!

Thanks for that: I should have thought of blu-ray.com.

Can't seem to find any mention of how the UK version might differ though.

For anyone interested, it seems that the CEE (Central European Edition) Disc 2 has the Best Buy exclusives that are missing from the standard Disc 1.

Is that the Limited Edition Steelbook or the standard Triple Play Edition?

The online retailers suggest the standard Triple Play is only 2 discs, but then they say the AR = 1.85:1 with DTS-HD MA audio.

It's all so confusing with the different variants floating around: surely it isn't good marketing practice.

I own the SteelBook though it's my understanding that the standard release contains the same discs: 2 BDs, 1 DVD and a downloadable digital copy. As for the specs, it's 2.40:1 AR and TrueHD 7.1 audio.

If you were checking JB Hi-Fi for specs don't even bother with them. They're worse than Amazon.

A+

This soundtrack is one of the rare recent blockbuster tracks that had superlative, powerful dynamics and monsterous bass! The 7.1 track was just rock solid with great spatial effects. Great movie if you have great subs AND Burrkickers! Awesome and loud! This track is reference all the way!

Picture quality very good as well. I didn't see any of the macroblocking or crushed blacks... but though it may've been present, it did not call attention to itself on my 14' wide scope screen (SIM2 3 Chip DLP).

It's damned annoying that retailers don't list accurate specs for products online.

The ebay offerings suggest only 2 discs for the standard Triple Play, but the Steelbook definitely has 3 discs and even a sticker advertising the "2 hours of extra content". Won't really know for sure unless I purchase a copy, but not at the prices asked.

The Aussie version is a ripoff at $39 compared to the $20 Best Buy equivalent (as usual).

I was wondering if you guys can help me, my copy of ghost protocol is not crisp and clear like my other blurays. Is this the way the movie was transferred or do I have a bad copy?

Not knowing your viewing preference or display chain no one can really say if your disc is defective.

My experience with the disc has been stellar, overall no DNR or EE except for perhaps one or two instances, otherwise it appears as a proper transfer should look.

The only issues that have been reported by folks have been compression artifacts, and those maybe due to particular display chains having problems with the disc or there may indeed be a defective encode floating out there.

It seems unlikely that you have a version that is overly soft, the simplest explanations would be something in your display chain has been changed, you are accustomed to DNRed and EE releases, or you have mistaken the DVD for the BR.

Hope you can find a resolution to the problem.

Best Regards

I have an oppo 93 connected to a 70" sharp, any other bluray I put looks phenomenal except this one. I guess I'll check both discs one last time and return it for a new one if need be. Thank you for the fast response.

For added support, like other BD's there will be no question that you're watching BD quality when you see it. Very high grade quality at that! I'm not sure if it's the same for everyone but it kind of baffles me why you would buy a BD and they cover that disc with all the marketing paraphernalia.

if you read this whole thread, i think you're the 4th person to complain about this. there are apparantly some copies of the bd that, for whatever reason, are poor transfers. some were bought and other rental copies.

i would suggest an exchange as you likely will not have this issue with another copy.

I watched the Blu-ray version and I indeed saw some ugly macroblocking, especially in the subtle gradation of dark shadows. My Panasonic 110 doesn't have a bitrate meter so I don't know if it was due to a low bitrate or bad 10 bit pro HD master to 8 bit consumer conversion, etc.

Watched it on a calibrated Infocus projector and 100" screen.

Just a so-so action/suspense flick with only a passable storyline. Better than most of the 2011 summer fare, but that's not saying much. Transformers and Marvel superhero flicks up the wazoo... blech!

Paula Patton was the only reason to watch this... wow! what a woman!

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

Too bad Paula isn't in more stuff.

I watched this again with a full theater at a party last night. I did not see blocking at any point and no driop outs in the audio either.

Can I get some time points to look for the blocking ?

31:30 to 31:36. This is the worst instance of macro blocking that I saw. It is the fade up from black to a closeup of Hunt's face in the hospital after the Kremlin bombing.

Please let me know if you see it on your copy. Mine is the Best Buy exclusive.

I am using an Oppo BDP93 and an Anthem LTX300V LCOS projector at 110".

That right there is probably the best advertisement blu-ray can get. You're so used to a great picture, going back to standard def is immediately an issue. :-)
