I received review copies of these yesterday and took a quick glance at both.

54 is one of the worst transfers I've ever seen on Blu. I'm not one to throw around the "looks like a standard def upconvert" line but this really DOES look like a standard def upconvert, with a heaping of DNR thrown on top of it. In one scene near the beginning there are even SD "jaggies" around an establishing shot of Ryan Philippe's neighborhood!

REINDEER GAMES sadly does not fare much better. There's not as much DNR but the image is nearly as painful to look at. It's framed at 2.35, thankfully, but the image may be derived from an SD source as well. If it's not, there's so little HD detail in it, it's hard to see. I'll take a longer look at it, but my first reaction was that it was terrible, and inferior to the Canadian release (vastly inferior) visually, even with the aspect ratio/director's cut here being correct.

Just a word of warning...I would wait until the inevitable $5 price drop if you're a REINDEER GAMES fan.

Ugh. 54 has always been non-anamorphic. Can it really be that bad?

It's awful. I kid you not Digitalfreak. It's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (European version), OUT OF AFRICA, SPARTACUS bad. The soundtrack is great...but that's about it.

Studio Canal is releasing their version soon. Should we wait for a comparison? Or will it be the same encode?

Is it a case of the DC only being mastered at SD?

That thought ran through my mind. Either way, I'm glad you guys are starting to see the screenshots now so I'm not alone on an island lol.

54 is even worse...and they have no excuse on that one!

Not disagreeing with most of the comments on Reindeer Games. Almost certainly the same transfer struck for the DVD. Even though a 1080p upscale and AVC encode will certainly look better than the DVD minted from the same transfer, it's still a shoddy excuse of a Blu-ray. BUT...

I can sum up in two words why I'll get this anyway...

Charlize Theron.

So, there.

Possibly, but my player doesn't add those ugly interlacing-like doubled lines when it upscales.

Then why are the ones outside the US all saying Extended and Theatrical?

I wouldn't be so sure. It's atrocious.

Like I said, I'm wondering if it's the same transfer. I might hold off.

Looks like the SC version is just as horrible.

The last hope is the Warner version coming out next month in japan. Unfortunately, I'm sure that will cost $50.

Looks like Japan got a different encode.
