PAL JOEY is in the mail as we speak. I hope to get it next week (I'm in Canada so it takes awhile).

I have to say I was a bit shocked and disappointed to see JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH as a Twilight Time release. Every two-bit, low budget adaptation and remake seems to get a release. I'm surprised that Fox passed on releasing their classic.

Amen. ISLAND looked great (and still probably more entertaining than the current JOURNEY 2). Boy would I love an HD disc of THE TIME MACHINE or WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM. Probably be hard to get the rights from hamfisted MGM/Warners though.

Wow, thanks for posting the upcoming Twilight Time BR releases. Will definitely order Bell, Book, and Candle as well as Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959). The Twilight Time BR releases are expensive, but there are no other options because the major studios are not willing to re-master them and convert them into BR. I am one to pick and choose, especially at this higher price level, but if one wants The Egyptian, Picnic, or Pal Joey there are no other options for BR. It is a pleasure to watch these high grade transfers onto BR.

Mysterious Island is a stunning disc. It deserves so much more than a limited release.

Why? Has it sold out yet? No. Is it near selling out? No. So, it's not really a limited release until it sells out. Right now everyone who wanted it has it - maybe that tells you just a little something about catalog titles.

To be fair... How many people outside of this forum know about this movie or Twilight Time?

Forums like this are only a small sampling of potential customers... so I'd wager there are a lot of people who might want this movie that have no idea it is available to be ordered.

It's a lot different having it listed at Amazon and Best Buy as opposed to a small site few people know of outside of the community. With that remake "thing" in theaters now, people might have an interest in it. With a print run of only 3,000 copies, it's certainly not common.

Fourteen.

The idea that "everyone who wanted it has it" is preposterous.

I recently posted an informal review of FRIGHT NIGHT on a horror movie forum. This generated excitement from a lot of people who said it was one of their favorite movies and they wanted to know how to buy it.

The answer was greeted with, "Huh? Are you kidding...?"

We can argue all we want about whether or not these limited Twilight Time releases are a good idea. I don't think so...and my copy of PAL JOEY arrived this afternoon.

But let's not pretend that sales figures from Twilight Time even remotely reflect anything resembling a reasonable market. Twilight Time occupies a tiny corner of the internet with a tiny presence known to a tiny collection of movie geeks (guys like me) who have enough time on their hands to ferret out these releases.

Outside of a handful of hobbiest forums, Twilight Time has ZERO presence. ZEE-RO!

I'm not saying this to beat up on Twilight Time...I've bought THREE of their Blu-rays in three months and I'll be buying more.

But I am beating up on the nonsense that we can learn ANYTHING about a title's popularity based on Twilight Time sales. Numbers from Twilight Time tell us NOTHING.

I am sure that a lot more people visit:

http://www.blu-ray.com/

than there are AVS members. The above link is how I found out about The Egyptian BR and if you are really dedicated one would eventually come across:

http://www.screenarchives.com/index.cfm

You can check the members of AVSForum and Blu-ray... and check the daily traffic (though that won't necessarily tell you how many new users since guests who visit multiple times might appear as if they are different guests).

The point still sticks that as cool as we all think AVSForum, Blu-ray.com, DBSTalk, MacRumors.com (just to spread the love around a few of my favorite forums) are... there just aren't that many of us visiting on a daily basis and keeping track of these sorts of things.

Compound that... how many times do you read a thread on here where one of us regulars misses knowing something? I've almost missed a new episode of a show I look forward to watching because I didn't know it was coming on again until reading a post from another user on the forum...

I'm not knocking Twilight Time either... but it is really hard to extrapolate larger sales numbers from their business model because they are relatively secluded.

It would be like if you went to a local flea market in your area and found a dealer with a table full of stuff... and every time you went back you saw the same items not selling... and then you concluded that no one anywhere in the country must want those items because surely people who visit flea markets talk to each other and would know about that one obscure place that was selling those antiques.

Heck, I've been on this forum for years and the first time I heard of Twilight Time was when the Fright Night thread started... and clearly that wasn't Twilight Time's first release nor was it their first release of something that might have interested me... and yet somehow I missed seeing any previous discussion of Twilight Time.

TT has been in existence for less than a year, and they released only 1 other Blu-Ray before Fright Night (The Egyptian), so it's not as if you'd see much talk about them on a Blu-Ray board or forum previously. There was a thread about The Egyptian on here that was fairly well read I believe.

They don't need huge sales numbers to make their model work. What they need to make it work are 3000 sellable copies. When doing something new and different like this, it takes time to get the word out. A title that sells out like FRIGHT NIGHT helps to do that and increase awareness. Nobody knew what TT was a year ago. A year later, and people are starting to understand it.

Who's "us"? I mean no offense by this, but I'm not sure you speak for the average active buyer of Blu-Rays. How else do you think BD buyers mostly find about news involving this format? The web is the main place to go for Blu-Rays in terms of announcements and news. TT has been very proactive about getting the word out here, Blu-Ray.com, HTF, even newspapers and other mainstream outlets have covered their titles. Not sure really what else they can do that you think they haven't done in that respect.

Beyond that, how do you "keep track of these sorts of things"? When do you find out about a new release from any label these days? If I didn't read the new release announcements at BD.com daily I'd almost certainly miss something. The days of going down to the video store to see what just came in are long over.

Look at the total number of members here or at Blu-ray.com. That's a very small number compared to the number of people out there with Blu-ray players that buy/rent Blu-rays on an active basis.

The "us" I'm talking about are the relatively few people who are on here every day checking for this kind of stuff. I know lots of people who love movies, but they don't check the web every day to see when something is coming out.

Most people I know (even those with computers) still depend mainly on walking into a retail store OR looking to see what is in stock at Amazon. They would never see a Twilight Time release until long after it sells out OR if it isn't "hot" like Fright Night to generate buzz, they wouldn't find out about it even if copies are still available.

Like I said... I'm on the internet all the time and I didn't know Twilight Time existed until Fright Night and only then because of threads here and Blu-ray.com. I know they are a fairly new company, but if the people who most might want to buy your stuff don't know you exist, that seems like a potential problem.

I knew about TT, only because I buy a lot of sound tracks from Screen Archives. We can only hope that they get more successful and more people are aware of them. It's unfortunate, that some people missed out.

Can only hope that SAE can sell enough copies to stay in a profitable business. Those copies can be very pricey, but if you want it, then you have to spring for it, because some of their stuff is not available anywhere else. And some stuff, aside from Fright Night BR, actually does sell out like the 45th Anniversary 2 disc CD set for the complete 1967 Casino Royale sound track, which was limited to 1500 copies and seemed to disappear very fast. Still available but at a much higher price from vendors on Amazon.
