So with zero fanfare, a new version of The French Connection has landed on Best Buy shelves. Visibly looks like the DVD image (in terms of colors), no color de-saturation issues, no reds bleeding all over the place, etc.

Some pesky BD+ issues preventing full confirmation...

Excellent news indeed, and just wanted to add that there is also a newly remastered Best Buy-exclusive edition of Wall Street as well, this time sporting Oliver Stone approval.

The site manager of blu-ray.com has posted a quick screencap comparison between the old/new French Connection in the thread for the re-release:

Unfortunately for supplement collectors it's a one disc affair.

So to have all the extras you need both versions.

They moved the features to disc 1, and dropped the "Color timing" (understandably) and BBC Poughkeepsie Shuffle documentary.

...Or maybe you knew that. I guess I read your post as under the impression all extras were dropped.

That's terrific news! I've held off buying both FRENCH CONNECTION and WALL STREET in hopes better transfers would eventually be released. Patience pays off!

... now back to holding my breath for PATTON...

I'll hold on to my 2-disc DVD version for the extras, but I will finally be able to own this on Blu-ray with the proper transfer.

So this should be on the shelves now?

BTW, something I find baffling about this:

Why bother going to the effort of re-mastering a movie, making a special "signature" series, and releasing them without a peep? Do they just want to make sure they make as little money for as much effort as possible?

Yes, but if you want *all* extras you need both discs.

Saw these at the store on Tuesday and I figured that they were the same transfer. I'm going to snag Wall Street and French Connection after work today to get the sale price. They look like nice packages. Too bad the other 2 currently in the series are snoozers.

Just went to my local Best Buy and they didn't have any in stock, even though website showed them as having it. Safer just to order it off their website.

Order site to store, then you don't have to pay for shipping. It puts the onus on them to store it behind customer service until you arrive to pick it up.

Not only that, but they made it a frickin' store exclusive to boot. Madness.

to me... it looks like there should be a happy medium between the two prints... the over saturated version is not good, but the new master, as good as it looks, needs better color control.

I know for a fact those car colors are not correct.

Don't know about other BB's, but mine consistently screws up on site-to-store orders. Thankfully, standard shipping is free on this one.

Because if they made a big deal about this, all the folks that settled for the "crushed levels" release would inundate them with requests for a replacement program...

I just got them. On sale $14.99. French Connection looks WONDERFUL now. Grain intact, colors not mucked around with. Very pleased.

Wall Street also looked very good (I don't have the previous version so can't tell you the amount of upgrade the new master is), but I've just skipped around to sample some scenes on each disk and plan to watch them both fully this weekend.

Slip covers were actually nice, except for the dreaded BB price stickers on the front. Had to use goo gone or whatever it's called to remove the residue.

Also was surprised to see rather elegant 20+ page booklets for each release. I like this "Director's Series" from Fox and hope Patton follows very soon.

Does the new French Connection disc still have the isolated score?

I would not judge the transfer on the BR.com shot just yet, it looks amazing compared to the vile old version even based on that shot!

Also I love the cover art, that is really nice.

Has anyone in Canada figured out how to get one of these new releases?

I don't see them mentioned on bestbuy.ca and my local bestbuy did not have any.

I don't even see them listed on the USA bestbuy web site. But I presume even if I could find one there they wouldn't ship to Canada (?).

Thanks,

How can you be sure about the car colors? Back in the late 1960's and early 1970's lots of stolen cars were repainted and abandoned in front of the Capital Building!

Seriously, if you look at how intense the shadows are on the sidewalk this scene was shot in brilliant sunshine. The remaster looks much closer to what one would expect to see in those lighting conditions. While I haven't see my copy, I picked it up this am, if the color is oversaturated a bit one can always turn it down a click or two.
