The Digital Bits is reporting Altered States for July 10, same day as Outland and some others:

Quote:
Here's awesome news: Warner Home Video has announced MORE new WHV and New Line catalog Blu-ray titles for release on 7/10, including Altered States, The Astronauts Wife, Brainstorm, Coma, Frequency, the Spawn: Director's Cut and (wait for it...) Outland!

I've been wanting to see Altered States again for a while, but the DVD is so pathetic I didn't have the heart.

Outland already has a thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1401194

I've always been interested in seeing this movie. I saw it a loooong time ago and was probably too young to appreciate it. I'll be checking this out for sure.

Good to hear, was on my wishlist along with Outland. I purchased a used DVD of Altered States several months ago to revisit this film and was glad to see that it still held up. A real time capsule when one compares the young Blair Brown with her current role in the Fringe TV series.

For some of us, ALTERED STATES is nearly autobiographical.

I'm on it Day One. They BETTER NOT screw up the video with DNR or other crap or failure to pristine-ize the print as much as possible. Lossless audio should be awesome.

Altered States, Brainstorm, Coma? Nice. I found Outland (1981) mediocre at best however.

Whoopee!!!
Can't even count how many times I've watched this on VHS & DVD.
The ten buck WB anamorphic silver disc from the last century was my fave value flick for at least a decade.
If the upgrade is near "Dangerous Liaisons" on Blu I'll go into a psychedelic frenzy!!!

LOSSLESS! LOSSLESS!! LOSSLESS!!!

Man, I've loved this movie from the first time I saw it (Blair Brown is amazing cute) and the 10 or 12 times since. This is great news since the DVD is so mediocre. ("This guy is a f***ing gorilla!)

Yes! Yeeeeeeeesssss!

Been hoping they'd do Altered States soon. I've loved it ever since seeing it many times when it came out on one of Toronto's massive theaters (The University, as I remember). The picture and sound experience were incredible back then.

I've watched the DVD over the years, but have recently held off hoping for Blu-Ray to come through, so whoo-hoo!

Hmmm...

Pretty terse review. Seems to give it a general thumps up, including for detail and clarity. Though the screenshots appear to me to be somewhat red in tone, somewhat blurry and DNR'd.
I guess I'll have to see for myself when I get the Blu-Ray.

I'll never forget seeing this at a sneak preview in Seattle, it came after a showing of Neil Diamond's The Jazz Singer and people were allowed to stay and watch if they wanted. You never seen so many people BOLT for the exits once Altered States started ramping up into the weirdness! It was hilarious! Guess Neil Diamond fans couldn't take Ken Russell. biggrin.gif I'll be buying this one on Blu, for sure.

Wow, epic scrub-fest. Very disappointing. Warner's transfers have definitely been on the up and up lately, but that's just a mess. I'll definitely stick with my HDNet Movie capture.

Yeah, the DVD Beaver screencaps look like most of the grain is gone. Disappointing, if they're accurate.

...and when has dvdbeaver completely removed film grain? Oh yeah... never, despite a few conspiracy posts this has always been disproved. Explain why Coma has film grain in dvdbeaver's caps posted an hour later, oh yeah I forgot it's a strangely random conspiracy.

Que the 'nobody here knows dvdbeaver jpeg compression setting is too low' post. Everybody here knows it.

Are you guys taking into consideration the fact that the movie has a ton of optical composites?

I'll display my ignorance by asking what that means for grain and any negative impact on the Blu-Ray image quality.

So far no one but DVDBeaver has reviewed the BD.

I'll probably buy it anyway if it's noticeably better than the DVD. Luvthismovie!

No one knows "everything"! smile.gif

When overlaying optics you double the grain.
It's EZ too see this effect w/optical title effects. The pic will have a standard grain structure & when a title appears the grain gets heavier. You'll all so be able too track print damage on the title optic as its 'frozen', while the camera optics may be panning.
Then the title optics grain/defects goes away till the next title optic comes up (which may have different print damage marks; if any).

You'll see people posting bout how grainy a catalog film is... cause when their watching the opening there's tons of grain... rolleyes.gif
you don't want too be one of "those" posters... biggrin.gif.

It increases film grain which Lowry states in License to Restore which of course they hate. Their solution? Wipe it out. Sure in the Lowry example detail took a hit and became blurry but thats the price you gotta pay to get rid of 'annoying' film grain.

Opticals may increase grain by nature of the fact that you're taking each composited element a further generation away from the source. However, they may also soften grain (and detail) in each of those individual layers for much the same reason.

I have not seen the Altered States Blu-ray, but I have to wonder if some people are confusing optical compositing issues for DNR.

Maybe if you gave an example of the Bev's screen caps (what we're all gong by/for now) were optical effects are effecting (P.I.) the perceived transfer quality?
