It's ironic because many assume the simple equation that more visible grain on the Blu-ray's transfer necessarily equals a more film-like transfer. The closer one gets to the OCN, there should be less visible grain from most film stock. Too many reviewers have given passes to a lot of the inferior MGM transfers, simply because they were sourced from secondary film elements and were unprocessed, producing heavy grain on the Blu-rays.
When it seems like every other release is slathered in DNR and EE, I've been more than willing to give passes to some otherwise questionable transfers simply because they were unprocessed.
Keep in mind Phantom Stranger is a major driving force behind those stupid "tier" threads. So grain of salt and all that.
As witnessed by this very thread, it was a practical impossibility to build a consensus over what constitutes a filmic transfer for each movie. That wasn't the case for overall picture quality and pure eye candy, which by its nature was a different creature. The Tiers serve their intended purpose very well if you understand the basis behind them. This forum had a list solely devoted to faithful transfers, but it never generated much interest beyond a few participants and was abandoned by another member.
