Just because Jennifer Lawrence is a hottie, by any chance?

The film, by its trailer alone, looked ludicrous to me.
TazExprez likes this.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

Nah she does not really do it for me, it was genuinely a fantastically entertaining movie.

Even if you're not wild about the plot I can tell you that that soundtrack was incredible. The ambient effects were mesmerizing.

The lead actress is beautiful, but probably much too young for anyone on this forum. And yes, this is an entertaining movie (IMO); would be even better without

You know, after a thorough reflection, I can say this with all certainty: no she's not, not at all!

No to being beautiful, or being too young? I'm no senior citizen, but she's "jail-bait" to myself; even if she's 21.

Her face is not the prettiest I've seen, but she has a smokin hot body! ...and well, she's 21, so everything's legal and fine lol

So for those who have seen both this and Battle Royale, how does this compare?

No. I mean yes. But no. Yes she's a hottie in it but not it was not good just because of that. I had never read the books before and didn't even know what they were about but I have to say it was pretty darn good and the books too. Not at all what you might expect when you see YA on something. Actually some of the YA, some definitely not all, is actually arguably better than most of the AF stuff these days as I've recently discovered.

I'll be honest, I really didn't like this movie, mainly due to the constant tv-style hand held "wiggly-cam" shtick. I can't say which director/photographer gimmick I despise more in recent movies, this or fake lense flares.

I agree, the shaky cam bugs me too.

Wasn't overwhelmed by it and read the 1st book.

Having said that I will pick it up for the right price. It's a good flick.

I was really looking forward to watching this movie and now the shaky camera style has me hating it already. Oh well the three books, IMHO, were not that well written either, even if they were considered Teen books. Reading the three books, it felt like a rehash of ideas from Battle Royale to a bunch of reality shows like Lost and Project Runway. I considered the books had set a very low bar where a film could easily surpassed, which is usually not the the case, but with this shaky camera business, I am now not too optimistic.

I will still give it a try and see how long I can sit through the shaky camera before getting nauseous.

Still Learning

I disliked this movie for the perception that death was nothing of consequence to the majority: it sends a bad message to youth that is already anaesthetised to suffering from video games.

Despite it's length, it seemed like only half a movie: the ending had revenge-sequel written all over it.

I think that's because it's the first part of a trilogy.
  • The Hunger Games
  • Catching Fire
  • Mockingjay

Like it or not, Hunger Games is the new Harry Potter.

The shakey-cam was manditory. It's a story of teens murdering one another from a series of books for young adults. Therefore it had to be PG13. And to be PG13 the violence had to be stylized and incoherent. There's no better way to do that than to shoot it in that manner. They'll have to do the next two in the trilogy in the same way (and did I hear they were going to tease this out into four films?)

It's a good film, exciting enough; Jennifer Lawrence is beautiful and charismatic, but it's execution is not particularly stylish. It's a Chris Columbus Harry Potter version instead of an Alfonso Cuarón Harry Potter version.

Quadrology?

Maybe, maybe not.

Yes, four films total. Everyone has signed on for the next three sequels. MockingJay will be split into two parts scheduled for release in 2014 and 2015.
