'Courageous' Rises to the Occasion, Tops Sales Chart

25 Jan, 2012
By: Thomas K. Arnold

Sony Pictures dominated the home video charts the week ended Jan. 22, scoring the top two slots on all three charts.

On the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, the studio’s home entertainment division snapped the No. 1 spot with Courageous and the No. 2 spot with The Ides of March, both new releases. Courageous is a police drama with a domestic box office gross of $34.5 million; Ides of March is a political drama starring Ryan Gosling and George Clooney that earned just less than $41 million in U.S. theaters.

A third new release, Lionsgate’s Abduction ($28 million), debuted at No. 3 on First Alert. Sony’s Moneyball, the top seller the prior week, slipped to No. 4.

On Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Ides of March debuted at No. 1 while Courageous bowed at No. 4 — not surprising, given that Ides generated 39% of its sales from the high-definition disc, as opposed to just 16% for Courageous. Moneyball, the previous week’s top Blu-ray seller, slipped to No. 2, while Abduction bowed at No. 3.

Sony also has the week’s two top rentals, with Moneyball remaining at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine’s weekly rental chart for the second consecutive week and Ides of March bowing at No. 2. Abduction debuted at No. 4, and Courageous entered the chart at No. 8.

Blu-ray Sales: Ides of January

January is typically a really bad month for the home market, and it is usually even worse for Blu-ray.

Not only are there not many hits coming out, but those that are being released tend to be films that are better suited to DVD than Blu-ray (middling hits, dramas, etc.). This is certainly the cast with this week's new releases.

Leading the way on the Blu-ray sales chart was Ides of March, a political drama, with 116,000 units / $2.08 million. Its opening Blu-ray share was 39%, which is better than expected for the genre.

Moneyball was in second place in terms of units with 109,000 units, but led the way in terms of dollars with $2.50 million. After two weeks of release, the film has sold 576,000 units and generated $12.24 million in total.

Abduction was next with 83,000 units / $1.65 million, giving it an opening week Blu-ray average of just under 30%. Action films should do better, so this suggests the film's main audience was Twilight fangirls.

Courageous opened in first place on DVD, but only managed fourth place on Blu-ray with 72,000 units / $1.48 million. An opening Blu-ray share of just 16% is bad, even for the genre.

The Killer Elite remained in the top five with 54,000 units / $1.27 million for the week, lifting its totals to 297,000 units / $6.12 million after two.

No other new releases charted.

The overall Blu-ray market slumped when compared to last week and last year.

Compared to last week, it was down 57% in terms of units and 53% in terms of dollars.

Its decline compared to last year was not as strong, but it still fell a distressing 15% in terms of units and 5% in terms of dollars.

DVD sales held on better than Blu-ray compared to last week, but worse compared to last year.

The overall Blu-ray share slipped to hit 29% in terms of units and 35% in terms of dollars, which is barely better than last year's numbers.

Next week should be better with the release of Paranormal Activity 3 and Real Steel, among others. However, Red led last year's DVD sales chart with more than 1 million units and the Blu-ray sales chart with 660,000 units. I don't think any of this year's releases will match that.

DVD Sales: New Releases have the Courage to Stand up to Holdovers

It was a mixed week on the home market as far as new releases were concerned. On the one hand, four of the top five spots on the DVD sales chart were new releases. On the other hand, they were the only new releases to reach the top 30.

Courageous was the best of the bunch selling 381,000 units and generating $6.47 million in opening week sales. Abduction was well back in second place with 195,000 units sold and $2.93 million in sales. The film had horrible reviews, weak box office numbers, and now a poor showing on the home market.

Ides of March opened in third place with 180,000 units / $3.06 million during its opening week. It was an inexpensive movie to make, while it is doing relatively better on Blu-ray, so I think the studio will be happy with its home market debut
.

Moneyball fell from first to fourth with 175,000 units / $3.16 million during the week giving it totals of 627,000 units / $10.84 million after two. Kevin Hart: Laugh at My Pain rounded out the top five with 118,000 units / $1.54 million, which is fantastic for this type of release. Then again, most stand-up concert films don't have a theatrical run, so it might be an unfair comparison.

Here is the The-Numbers charts for the matching weeks in 2012 and 2011 and 2010.

Blu-ray chart for last year not available.

January 2011 clearly had better residual sales of recent 4Q December releases than 2012 or even 2010.

Releases matter even beyond the current weeks TBO.

Real Deals for ‘Real Steel’

24 Jan, 2012
By: John Latchem

RealSteel.jpg
Shoppers looking to pick up Disney’s new robot boxing flick, Real Steel, had a few options once it hit shelves Jan. 24.

Best Buy advertised a $5 coupon that could be used on the three-disc Blu-ray/DVD/digital copy combo pack, bringing the price down the $22.99. The coupon was available at RealSteelCoupon.com/BestBuy through Jan. 29.

Target had a different kind of Real Steel deal, offering a $5 discount off the joint purchase of any Real Steel Blu-ray and a $7.49 Real Steel action figure.

Other promotions focused on Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 3. Best Buy offered the first two films on DVD for $4.99 each and on Blu-ray for $9.99 each.

Target offered a $5 instant savings with the joint purchase of Paranormal Activity 3 with either of the first two films.

Projections: 'Real Steel' Looks to Take the Prize

30 Jan, 2012
By: John Latchem

RealSteel.jpg

Among the slew of Jan. 24 new releases, Real Steel is looking to outshine the rest. The film, from DreamWorks and distributed by Disney, grossed $85.3 million domestically, putting it prime position to top the sales and rental charts for the week ending Jan. 29.

It will have to hold off some strong competition. Summit's 50/50 earned just $35 million, but earned a lot of buzz during awards season. Paramount's Paranormal Activity 3 earned the most among new releases, at $104 million, but this isn't the prime season for horror, and the title is being released only as a Blu-ray combo pack initially, which may hold down its overall sales total. It should perform relatively better on the Blu-ray chart.

'Real Steel' Punches Its Way to Top of Sales, Rental Charts

Real Steel

Walt Disney Studios’ Real Steel, a sci-fi actioner with Hugh Jackman and Evangeline Lilly, scored a rare triple-play victory on the national home video charts the week ended Jan. 29, riding its $85.4 million domestic theatrical gross to a No. 1 debut on the overall sales and rental charts as well as the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

On the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, Real Steel was followed at No. 2 by another new release, Summit Entertainment’s 50/50, a comedy with a $35 million box office gross. Real Steel, however, outsold 50/50 by a 5-to-1 margin.

On Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Real Steel — which generated 54% of its first-week sales from the high-definition disc edition — was followed at No. 2 by a third new release, Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 3, which earned $104 million in U.S. theaters and is available only as a Blu-ray combo pack until Feb. 14, when the DVD-only version is released.

Even so, Paranormal managed to debut at No. 5 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 3 on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, underscoring the growing clout of Blu-ray. To further Blu-ray sales, several studios are toying with tiered release schedules, putting the Blu-ray in stores weeks before the DVD becomes available.

50/50 debuted at No. 2 on the rental chart and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, generating 45% of its total unit sales from the high-definition format.

Blu-ray Sales: Steel Grabs the Loot

There was no competition on the Blu-ray sales chart, as Real Steel topped all new releases and holdovers by a healthy margin. It sold 799,000 units and generated $22.36 million in sales giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 54%. Hopefully we will see a lot more films crack 50% as the winter blockbusters start to come out.

Paranormal Activity 3 opened in a distant second place with 202,000 units / $4.03 million. It hasn't been released on DVD yet, so obviously it has a 100% Blu-ray share.

50/50 opened in third place, just as it did on DVD, as it sold 133,000 units earning $2.40 million. The film's opening week Blu-ray share was 45%, which is incredibly strong for a non-action film. If its share was 10 percentage points lower it would have still been a good start.

Moneyball fell from second to fourth with 81,000 units / $1.97 million. After three weeks of release, it has sold 665,000 units and generated $14.40 million in Blu-ray sales, which is strong for this genre.

The Lion King returned to the chart in fifth place with 48,000 units / $1.09 million for the week. After four months of release, the film has sold 3.7 million units and generated $98 million in sales. It's very rare for a catalog title to reach $100 million in total Blu-ray sales, so this is fantastic.

The only other new release to chart was Transformers Trilogy Box Set with 24,000 units / $949,000.

The overall Blu-ray market rocketed back to life this week growing week-over-week by 97% in terms of units and 102% in terms of dollars.

It also grew compared to last year, albeit by smaller margins of 9% in terms of units and 26% in terms of dollars. DVD sales were not as fortunate falling a little bit from last week and substantially compared to last year. This helped the overall Blu-ray share climb to 44% in terms of units and 53% in terms of dollars, which is a huge improvement over last week and last year.

Next week there are a number of Blu-ray releases, but mostly for films that disappointed at the box office.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon does have a 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack, but I'm unsure how well that will sell. Last year's best selling DVD was Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2, but the best selling Blu-ray was Red, which repeated on top with just 172,000 units. Hopefully we can beat that.

DVD Sales: Real as Tough as Steel

This was not a deep week for new releases, as only two of them cracked the top 30. (One major new release was only released as a Blu-ray / DVD combo pack, so we will get to those numbers shortly.)

We did have a new number one on the DVD sales chart, as Real Steel sold 691,000 units and generated $12.03 million in revenue. This is not a great start, but it performed better on Blu-ray.

Courageous was pushed to second place with 188,000 units / $3.20 million for the week for totals of 599,000 units / $10.18 million after two. It was an inexpensive movie to make, so this is a great result so far.

50/50 placed third with 165,000 units / $2.47 million. This is not a huge number, but the film only cost $8 million to make, so the studio should be happy.

Moneyball held strong and remained in fourth place with 132,000 units / $2.41 million for the week for totals of 773,000 units / $13.50 million after three. Abduction fell to fifth place with 88,000 units / $1.33 million for the week and 298,000 units / $4.49 million after two. It continues to disappoint.

No other new releases made the chart.

The ‘Buddies’ Bring the Love

Walmart's 'Treasure Buddies' Gift Set
Several retailers offered the same promotion related to the new direct-to-video Treasure Buddies movie from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

Consumers who picked up the Blu-ray of Treasure Buddies along with the Blu-ray of an earlier “Buddies” movie, Snow Buddies, could save $8 off the total purchase price. The Snow Buddies Blu-ray was offered at $19.99 at both Best Buy and Target.

Walmart offered the Treasure Buddies Blu-ray combo as part of a travel journal adventure kit with a map, stickers and more.

Otherwise, promotional opportunities were relatively light. Best Buy promoted several deals in its weekly ad circular, such as a selection of Blu-rays at $19.99 each or two for $30, and a “Blu-ray on a Budget” selection at $9.99 each. Best Buy also had a selection of TV DVD season sets at $9.99 each, and 30% to 40% off TV DVD gift sets and complete series.

In time for Valentine’s Day, Best Buy offers select Disney films at $12.99 each, in pink sleeves with a special Valentine’s Day kit.

Now that the big theatrical tentpoles from last summer and fall have all been released, the studios are clearing out their vaults in preparation for the next big burst of home video sales activity, which should begin Feb. 11 with the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part I.

As a result, the sales and rental charts are full of theatrical underperformers and direct-to-video releases that are awaiting their moment in the sun on disc.

Four of the five top-selling discs for the week ended Feb. 5 are new releases. None hit the $40 million box office mark, and three sold more copies on Blu-ray Disc than they did on standard DVD.

Debuting at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart is Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Drive, a crime drama starring Ryan Gosling that earned just slightly more than $35 million in its September 2011 theatrical release. Drive generated 57% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc.

On First Alert, the No. 2 spot went to Walt Disney Studios’ Treasure Buddies, the latest installment in the successful kid-friendly film franchise about a group of mischievous pups.

On the Blu-ray Disc chart, the No. 2 spot went to 20th Century Fox’s In Time, a sci-fi thriller starring Justin Timberlake with a $37.5 million domestic theatrical take. In Time generated 54% of its sales from Blu-ray Disc.

In Time debuted at No. 3 on First Alert, just ahead of Disney’s Real Steel, the previous week’s top seller. Rounding out the top 5 is Universal Studios’ The Thing, a prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter classic of the same name, which earned just $16.9 million in theaters. The Thing generated 55% of its sales from Blu-ray Disc.

Real Steel and The Thing also finished at No. 4 and No. 5 on Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc sales chart, with the No. 3 spot going to Transformers: Dark of the Moon, recently re-released as a 3D Blu-ray.

On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, Drive debuted at No. 1, bumping the prior week’s top rental, Real Steel, to No. 2.

Warner’s Contagion, coming off its holdback from Redbox and Netflix, jumped to No. 3 from No. 57 the previous week.

Blu-ray Sales: In the Driver's Seat

New releases dominated the Blu-ray sales chart with as many as four in the top five. (Transformers: Dark of the Moon is a bit of an odd case, but more on that in a second.)

Drive led the way with 420,000 units / $8.39 million giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 57%. This is a great opening compared to the film's theatrical run.

In Time also did better on Blu-ray than it did on DVD earning second place with 306,000 units / $6.12 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 54%. This is the type of film that should thrive on Blu-ray, so it is no real surprise it cracked 50%.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon returned to the chart in third place with 190,000 units / $3.82 million for the week giving it a total of 3.19 million units / $68.03 million. It was able to get back into the top five thanks to the release of the 3D Box Set, but we don't have a breakdown between the new release and the previous Blu-ray release.

Real Steel fell from first to fourth with 187,000 units / $5.24 million for the week giving it totals of 989,000 units / $27.69 million after two.

The Thing rounded out the top five with 168,000 units / $4.03 million, which was 55% of total units sold. Its theatrical run and its home market debut is weak, but that Blu-ray share is strong.

Treasure Buddies just missed the top five with 105,000 units / $2.66 million. Its opening Blu-ray share was 22%, which is low for the format as a whole, but strong for a live action kids' movie.

Dream House managed ninth place, which is what it earn on the DVD sales chart as well. It sold 55,000 unit while generating $1.25 million in opening week sales giving it a Blu-ray share of just 38%. I was expecting more.

To Kill a Mockingbird made its Blu-ray debut in tenth place with 43,000 units / $782,000. This is excellent for a catalog title and the studio should be very happy.

Star Trek: The Next Generation also made its Blu-ray debut this week with The Next Level, which was right behind at 43,000 units / $648,000. This is excellent for a TV on DVD release, especially one that is this old and is merely a taste of future releases.

The Big Year was further back in 14th place with 38,000 units / $894,000. Its hard to spin this number in a positive fashion, but its Blu-ray share of 31% is better than average for the genre.

Finally, we get to The Double in 19th place with 26,000 units / $394,000. It also earned a Blu-ray share of 31%, but action films should perform better than that.

The overall Blu-ray was strong compared to last week and last year. It grew 16% in terms of units and 3% in terms of revenue from last week, which is actually a little weaker than DVD sales grew from last week.

However, its growth was more explosive when compared to last year up 79% in terms of units and 78% in terms of dollars.

As usual, DVD sales were lower than last year, albeit by a more modest margin than we've seen in the recent past. The overall Blu-ray share was mostly steady compared to last week sitting at 44% in terms of units and 49% in terms of revenue. If it can maintain that level while we wait for the winter blockbusters to come out, I will be very happy.

Next week we have good news / bad news. The good news is The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 comes out. The bad news is, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 comes out. While the film should sell a lot of DVDs, I don't think its Blu-ray share will be great. Plus, it doesn't come out till Saturday, so only the first two days will count towards this week.

On a more positive note, last year's new releases were terrible, both on DVD and on Blu-ray. In fact, the number one selling Blu-ray was Paranormal Activity 2 at just over 100,000 units. Breaking Dawn, Part 1 should top that. Hell, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas could top that.

DVD Sales: Searching for Treasure on the Home Market

While there were a lot of new releases on this week's DVD sales chart, it was clearly a case of quantity over quality as even the best selling release was merely mediocre.

Treasure Buddies was top dog with sales of 381,000 units / $6.47 million during its opening week. This is roughly in line with the previous installment, but below average for the franchise.

Drive was relatively close behind with 313,000 units / $4.87 million. Hopefully it performed better on Blu-ray, as this was not a great start on DVD.

Real Steel fell to third place with 265,000 units / $5.30 million for the week giving it totals of 962,000 units / $17.43 million after two. It wasn't that long ago that even a second-tier release would sell more than 1 million units in the opening week, but the market has really atrophied in recent years.

In Time opened in fourth place with 263,000 units / $3.94 million, which is weak, even compared to its theatrical run. The Thing barely managed a spot in the top five during its opening week with 136,000 units / $2.37 million. It was a non-factor for it theatrical run and now it's struggling on the home market.

There were three more new releases to chart, but they were barely worth mentioning. Dream House placed ninth, but with just 90,000 units / $1.62 million while The Big Year was right behind with 82,000 units / $1.23 million. The final new release to chart was The Double, which only managed 12th place with 58,000 units / $609,000 units. This is not terrible, for a limited release that barely avoided the Mendoza Line during its opening weekend; however, the studio was obviously hoping for a lot more when it gave the film the greenlight.

A 'Twilight' and a 'Tramp'

7 Feb, 2012

Walmart's 'Lady and the Tramp' with dish set

Ordinarily, Disney’s Blu-ray re-release of Lady and the Tramp would have attracted the vast majority of retail attention its first week out.

Indeed, Target offered an $8 discount with purchase of the new Blu-ray and one of several previous Disney Blu-rays. Best Buy offered a Lady plush, as well as a $5 discount if customers turned in an old Disney DVD. And Walmart offered the Blu-ray packaged with a dinner bowl, fork and spoon.

Then there’s the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn —Part 1 on disc.

Target went the most all-out with its in-store displays and advertising. The chain’s weekly ad circular included a four-page insert of “Twilight” merchandise, including tie-in books, CDs, T-shirts, jewelry, cellphone accessories and more. Target also promoted a contest to stay at the island resort featured in the film, at http://www.avsforum.com/forum/www.IsleEsmeSweepstakes.com.

Target has a special limited-edition two-DVD set that includes prop flowers from the film’s wedding scene, and endcap displays in the electronics department displayed most of the tie-in products as video screens played invitations from the cast to attend Target’s midnight sale to see a preview of Breaking Dawn — Part II.

Best Buy’s “Twilight” exclusives include a Valentine’s Day sleeve for the new DVD and a steelbook case for the Blu-ray.

Projections: 'Twilight' Set to Again Rule Sales

Two notorious trends will come to a head the week ending Feb. 12 in a battle of past and present for the top spot.

Disney’s re-releases of its classic animated films as Blu-ray “Diamond Editions” usually take the top spot their first week in stores.

This week, however, Lady and the Tramp will have a lot of competition from the Saturday disc release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1. All “Twilight” films have debuted on disc on a Saturday, and all have topped the sales chart their first week in stores despite the short lead time.

Projected Top 3 Sellers for Week Ending 2/12/2012

2 Lady and the Tramp: Diamond Edition Disney New

The Twilgiht Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1

Summit Entertainment is going out with a bang. The company, which last month announced it is being acquired by Lionsgate for $412.5 million in cash and stock, scored the top-selling home entertainment release of the week — and, so far, the year — with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1.

Released on a Saturday instead of the traditional Tuesday, the latest installment in the hugely successful vampire-movie franchise was in stores for only two days during the week-long tracking period. Even so, Summit said it sold 3.2 million discs, 50,000 downloads and 80,000 VOD transactions on those two days.

Not surprisingly, Breaking Dawn easily bowed at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert overall disc sales chart the week ended Feb. 12.

Breaking Dawn was followed in the No. 2 spot by fellow newcomer Lady and the Tramp, from Walt Disney Studios, making its Blu-ray Disc debut. The No. 3 spot went to a third new release, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, the third installment in Warner’s edgy, stoner-buddy comedy franchise, which grossed $35 million in theaters.

On Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Lady and the Tramp narrowly edged out Breaking Dawn as the week’s top seller. A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas bowed at No. 3.

Just 25% of Breaking Dawn’s overall sales came from the Blu-ray Disc edition, compared to 38% for Harold and Kumar.

On Home Media Magazine’s weekly video rental chart, Breaking Dawn debuted at No. 3, behind holdovers Drive, from Sony (repeating at No. 1) and Disney’s Real Steel (repeating at No. 2).
