The blu-ray.com review is up: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Raid-Redemption-Blu-ray/47087/#Review I agree with the reviewer's take on the film itself, but I look forward to seeing it again in HD.

I think that if the lead had had a bit more charisma or personality, this would be a genre flick for the ages. You need someone who can connect with an audience on facial expressions alone, like Chow Yun Fat or Choi Min-Sik, even Jet Li. Iko Uwais is great movie martial artist, but if he's not kicking someone's ass, you'd forget he was there. Still, it's a good one to watch with some drinks and some friends. I'm going to check out Merantau also.

This was made for worldwide audiences I don't think an hour of subtitled exposition would have made it better, hell American audiences barely turned up as it was!
And it is a genre flick for the ages, just watch.

Hard for American audiences to show up when it only goes on a limited tour of theaters.

Glad I made a point of going out to see it though, and I can't wait for the BD to arrive.

Moonrise kingdom had less screens and broke records, also not all chains had it over here and only for one week in most.

Relentless action is cool to watch for 10 mn but how can they make you care for any of the story arcs, if any, or characters on an entire movie like this? I don't care for subtitles I hate dubbed movies regardless of their original language. Sometimes with these kind of films you just watch like a cool video game trailer but there's nothing. I'll rent it out of curiosity, I'm open to this kind of flicks so I'm not saying I'll hate it but I'm not sure it's my cup of tea either. Still, curious.

It's broken up by scenes of absolute tension that move you from being knocked back into your seat to the very edge of it.

I finally watched it over the weekend and absolutely loved it. I haven't seen such well choreographed martial art sequences in 'any' movie till date. I will definitely look forward to adding this to my collection once the price drops a bit. Really good stuff!

It is very, very well done.cool.gif

However, there is some stupidity in the movie too.
1. Running out of guns in an entire building full of guns, just so we could see some hand-to-hand stuff.
2. Our hero doesn't even bother to pick up guns from the bodies when he steps over.

I agree, I had a rolleyes.gif moment when that happened as well(when he steps into the corridor). But in lieu of the awesomeness of the hand to hand combat I'm willing to give it a pass biggrin.gif The main henchman was really something to behold, i believe he was the actual fight choreographer for the movie as well.

And that is one of the main problems with this film. The other even bigger problem is that the fights get absurdly monotonous very, very quickly. There is none of the inventiveness of something like Ong-Bak or the sheer fun of old school HK kung fu flicks. I almost fell asleep halfway. If you've seen the bone crunching fight at the end of Tom Yum Goong then you'll know what you're in for. That fight lasted a couple of minutes, so just imagine it stretched to 100. Zzzzzzzzz...

I had the same experience and I'm jealous of those who got more out of it. To me it's the movie equivalent of a two hour drum solo. Gets old. It didn't help that I really didn't care about any of the characters.

The North American soundtrack was pretty interesting, though I don't why someone thought an alternate soundtrack was needed.

Just to add more spice to the debate, I think The Raid stinks, and Battleship stinks too. So there. But The Raid stinks just a little more imho, I never expected Citizen Kane either, far from it, I just thought it was bad and boring.

Didn't see Battleship, but there is a fundamental difference in "goofy fun factor" when you compare The Raid that contains a lot of humorless stuff like multiple repetitive knife fights and spurting blood to the joy of giant robots smacking each other around.

Watched about 1/2 so far.
One thing I was really impressed by was the CGI (I assume) violence.
That is usually easy to pick out.
Every violent scene in a movie like The Mechanic, was so obviously CGI it took away from it.
In Raid, every gun shot and knife stab looked gruesomely realistic to me.

It's an ok movie, it seems like the director wanted to make an 80 minute homage to the hammer/hallway scene from Oldboy.
