Couldn't find a peep about this outside of Cinefacts. Warner released it to Germany and Spain in early May.

Theatrical cut ONLY. 30Mbps(!) AVC. Same 7.1 English track. I thought maybe the reason for the new encode was that they don't have dubs for the Director's Cut, but then I remembered the US disc used two separate encodes instead of branching anyhow. Could they have wised up?

Extras are the two TC commentaries, the two documentaries, and the trailer. Missing the DC-specific extras including its commentary, plus some other text extras.

New Line US BD (TC) vs 2012 Warner DE BD ... (vs Netflix Canada)

Still some dirt/scratch removal. Also what appears to be temporal DNR in some scenes (as I previously noted on the Netflix stream).

Grooves-Inc has it for cheaper than Amazon.de unless you're buying a bunch of discs: $21.51 + $2.55 = $24.06. Can also be had for a couple bucks less on eBay.

Perhaps not worth the importing cost considering the compromises, but nice to see a decent release after all these years.

It's the pathetic Theatrical Cut so it doesn't matter how good it looks.
Thanks anyway for the comparison...it's nice to see how it's supposed to look.

Alex Proyas (director of Dark City):
Quote:
I really do believe that Dark City happened before it’s time, or at least before a wider audience was ready to accept it. Because it was so forward thinking, there were a bunch of compromises I had to make, theoretically making it more accessible to a wider audience. Like most directors, compromise is just not something that sits well in the belly. I never felt comfortable “dumbing it down” to reach a broader audience.
So when the opportunity came around to re-cut the film for a HD release on Blu Ray, I jumped at the chance. It was a real labor of love, being able to go through all the old reels and pick out some elements I believed should have been in there from the start.
One thing I never liked about the original version was the voice-over in the beginning. I felt it gave away too many of the plot twists. The studio, however, pushed for the voice-over, urging that the movie may be too confusing for some otherwise. Well, that quickly went out the window on the new cut.
There were many more additions – little things, lines of dialogue here, extending a moment there. All the changes almost invisible, but resulting in a much better film I believe – a film which is far truer to my original vision.
Now there are people discovering the movie for the first time and watching the CORRECT version – so that’s a feeling of great satisfaction.
Though there are some loyalists out there who are so familiar with the theatrical version they prefer it and I respect that. Though whatever you hear about the original theatrical version, please do yourselves a favor – if you have never seen the movie before please watch the Director’s Cut first.

According to the Cinema Squid website there is a Japanese DC version scheduled for July 11, 2012.

*sigh* So annoying. Honestly, can't they just get it right the first time? I love some of the DC but dislike some of it. I would give a left finger to be able to make my own hybrid. biggrin.gif

Well, next year is the 15th anniversary, and we all know how the studios love to take these non-special anniversaries and use them as an excuse to trot out a new edition of their movies. That's what got us a proper transfer of Stargate.

Dark City is one of the more notoriously bad-looking blu-ray transfers out there. It would seem that whoever was in charge of remastering the New Line catalog for blu-ray just loves waxing the picture, because we've seen this exact same kind of thing on Pan's Labyrinth and Harold and Kumar go to White Castle. I would hope Warner realizes this and rectifies it eventually.

The voice-over at the beginning of the theatrical cut is what ruined the shorter version. When I saw the film theatrically, I walked in two minutes late and missed that entire voice-over. Only when I saw it on DVD months later did I realize the studio spoiled the whole story and "dumbed it down" with that ridiculous narration, totally unnecessary and wrecked how the story was supposed to function. As far as the DC goes, I don't love all the additional footage, but I'll watch it anytime over the theatrical cut....of course, you could also just skip the first minute or two, and open the Theatrical Cut with Rufus in the tub, which is how the film worked for me on first viewing.

In the WB cap I can see the female's mustache. The blue sky caps show the most dramatic difference even though I suspect they all came from the same master since the color and framing is identical.

That sure seems the case (with a tiny few exceptions). My Pan's Labyrinth is quite the wax fest.

This is a great thread, because it shows texbook A/B screenshots of what DNR looks like on blu-ray, and how much digital noise is created by sharpening.

I prefer the leaner/tighter theatrical cut (minus the opening voice over) so I'm happy about the existence of a non-oil painting version of DC out there. Gives me hope that other titles that were ruined by DNR will appear unfiltered someday.

Here is Warner JP's page for their new disc.

I find it hard to believe this is going to have the Director's Cut, despite the description. Why include Japanese audio, subs, and menus on this German/etc. TC-only disc and then not release it in Japan? Guess we'll find out soon when the Amazon.jp reviews start coming in.

The director's cut isn't mentioned on the back cover. The description on the website (which does mention the DC) is exactly the same as what was used for the Japanese release of the previous disc. Someone at Warner Japan got sloppy or confused.

As predicted, a bunch of negative reviews lamenting the lack of director's cut on the JP disc, noting false advertising. Too bad our Japanese friends don't browse here.

Amazon.co.jp reviews / Google translation

The Warner page that I linked earlier has been changed from Dark City: DC to just Dark City, but it can still be seen in its previous form via Google's cache.

I've never had a problem with the original BD unlike everyone else it seems. Looking at the comparisons I can barely see much of a difference. Slightly less DNR but nothing to write home about.

As others have said the theatrical version is garbage compared to the DC. Hope they do a full rerelease next year.

That is a bit much, so all the fans of the film only saw it on home video?

A shame this is the Theatrical cut, but those screenshots are some of the best proof yet (along with the unmodified BTTF screenshots) of the travesty that studios are unleashing by using EE and DNR on their titles.

So I guess Dark City was just a terrible film from 1998 to 2008 and no one liked it. This would include Roger Ebert who gave it 4 stars and put it on his greatest movies list before he even saw the "director's cut". tongue.gif

BTW, I loved Dark City in 1998 and I still love it, in it's lean tightly paced 100 min theatrical version. The only thing off about it was the opening narration and that could be fixed by muting the center channel for the first minute. IMO, It didn't need to be re-edited with redundant scenes put back in, Trevor Jones' fantastic score chopped up, badly done vfx laid over the original, etc.

Yeah, pretty much. wink.gif The movie gained its following on DVD (though in its theatrical cut).

Aside from the opening narration, I honestly can't tell the difference between the two cuts but I never really sat down to compare the two.

Quite a few differences, including Melissa George's hooker having a daughter, some altered audio cues, more shots of spirals, etc. etc. I would never consider the theatrical version "garbage" but I much prefer the superior DC and will probably never watch the TC version again.

Hi all, just here to says a big thank-you to msgohan for those screen shots, I bought Dark city back when I first got into bluray thinking that they were all an upgrade from DVD, I was a bit disgusted when I saw the waxy DNR mess they had released(not the worst I have seen, but still unnecessary) , I not too worried about loosing the DC as I'd rather have the TC the way it was in Cinemas, I will probably keep my DC version as it was very cheap when I bought it.

Cheers
