I noticed a copy of Downfall at Wallyworld Canada today. Has anyone given it a spin? If so, how is the quality of the transfer?

Thanks

PS It's an alliance release, so suspect about quality

the DVD is actually pretty good as a DVD transfer.... either way, the movie itself is excellent...

If it's not a BIG screen, it's not a theater...

The Blu-ray is much better than the DVD video and sound wise. The video provides really deep blacks that add a more realistic feel as most of the movie takes place indoors inside the bunker. Because of the added detail with Blu-ray the movie displays much more depth than the DVD as background objects are more visible. The sound is overwhelming with great bass when artillery shells explode in the city streets. A truly classic movie with an academy performance by Bruno Ganz as Hitler that is most enjoyed when watching on Blu-ray.

I have the UK copy, didn't know there is a Canadian version.

What a great movie form start to finish. Of course that "youtube" scene looks better than ever on BD too. biggrin.gif

Does the Canadian BD have a lossless audio track? The big failing on the UK version is the lack of a lossless option.

According to blu-ray.com:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Downfall-Blu-ray/41806/

It DOES have two lossless tracks.

Yes, agreed the Canadian version did have the lossless track listed on the packaging. I'll have to check the running time of the Alliance version, my region 2 DVD indicates 150min, which I assume was an extended version... I forget, it's been a while :-)

Wasn't this released on Blu-ray for like, twenty minutes, and then it disappeared?

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
amoungst several other parts, the scene where magda goebbels poisons her children is physically painful to watch, no matter how many times i've seen it...

To your knowledge, does it have all the same extras as the UK BD?

I see that it has a director's commentary which the UK BD lacks.

I think my favorite of Hitler vids from YouTube was the Hddvd versus bluray one.

FYI I ended up buying the discount and about halfway through watching it. Let me know if you have any questions.

I just received this on blu-ray and must admit that this is still one of the most powerful dramas I have ever seen... The transfer is excellent, notably more detailed than the standard DVD. It appears the sub-titles may be fixed on screen (when I FF the disc, the subtitles remained on screen, did not verify it on the setup menus).

If it's not a BIG screen, it's not a theater...
