I received a message today (July 5, 2012)-this movie has been shipped! I will post more information as soon as it arrives.

NOTE: I am aware that there is a "mass" Twilight Time/Screen Archives topic, but anyone who does not read that may have no idea this or other titles are being released. I only found it by "stumbling on" it in a new-release list on another Web site.

This disc release is limited to 3000 copies, available only from the distributor, Screen Archives. A quick Web search should give you the details.

I was disappointed in the Blu-ray master that Fox provided to Twilight Time for the release of Journey to the Center of the Earth so I had some concerns since this is another Fox title. It's good to hear that the TMMITFM Blu-ray is a quality pressing. I haven't seen this movie in ages so I don't know if it will hold up to repeat viewings for me. I see that VUDU has this title in HDX format (the same master?) so I may go that route first before deciding to order.

EDIT: I did rent and watch the HDX version of this film on VUDU and quality-wise it was closer to DVD than it was to Blu-ray. So if you just want to revisit this film then VUDU is okay but if you want the best quality available get the Blu-ray.

The Blu-ray disc arrived today (July 7, three days early-thank you, Screen Archives!). It is in a full (not "eco") disc case and includes an eight-page booklet with an essay by Julie Kirgo and credits for the movie's Blu-ray mastering, production, and manufacturing. The booklet has a reproduction of an original poster on its back cover.

Video quality: In a word, EXCELLENT! This transfer is razor-sharp, with high detail and the visible very-fine grain of the original Todd-AO 70mm film. The print is almost flawless, and definitely cleaner than the 2003 Fox DVD release of this movie. Colors look strong and consistent throughout the movie, and black levels are quite good-the scenes with Sir Percy's plane on the English Channel are much better than any previous home video release of "Those Magnificent Men". The disc is a huge improvement over the DVD, no doubt whatsoever.

Sound quality: Very good. Voices are clear, sound effects are good, and the music has decent range and very good stereo spread across the front speakers. Surround speakers are rarely used, but this was a stereo movie originally (unless the six-track version had surround).

Extras: Director's commentary, isolated music score (new to this release), two theatrical trailers, and two TV trailers (new to this release).

Missing extras that were on previous releases but are not on this disc: "Making Of" short film(s), still photo galleries.

Bottom line: Log off AVS Forum NOW and buy it! smile.gif Yes, I have loved this movie since I was five years old when it was released so I am biased, but it is a fun comedy-adventure movie in the grand 1960s style and it will probably never look better until a 4K release and displays are available. Keep your DVD or Laser Disc as well for the missing extras, though-they are very much worth having. I was hesitant to pay "retail price" for a movie after getting used to bargain releases and sales, but this is honestly the best $35 I have spent on a Blu-ray movie yet.

Thanks ChrisW6ATV for the review - just what I was wanting to hear! This is one I have been waiting on for a long time. A shame it is only limited to 3000 copies but I ordered mine about a week ago! Don't think it has shipped yet though (to Australia! :P)

Did you pay the extra 15.00 they advise for insurance?

No I didn't, but I just checked their site and it looks like mine actually was shipped on the 5th July. Just didn't get an email confirmation.

Thanks for the heads up! Just ordered.
One of my favorites from the 60's!

Maybe "The Great Race (1965)" will get the Twilight Time treatment soon?

Being a Warner title, probably not. Warner's pretty good about their catalog titles so I'd imagine they'd get around to it sometime.

Think I like the DVD cover better than the BD cover art.... I just can't help giggling when I see the gap toothed Terry-Thomas with that handle-bar mustache...

The cover art of the Blu-Ray thankfully is for once close to movie posters of the movie.
A nice departure from the horrible cover art for Demetrius and the Gladiators, that is right up there with the tasteless covers of King of Kings and The Greatest Story Ever Told.

I've never seen the movie but there is a 70mm screening of it next year, just a 3h drive from my home. Anyone seen it on the big screen? Is the movie worth the trip?
