When it first listed on Amazon it was $41.99. Maybe it will come down from what it is now.

Indeed, I am absolutely fuming at Animeigo, if this early report is true.

This collection of films will probably never look any better than it will on this upcoming release. So it is up to the buyer to decide whether or not to purchase it. I won't know about the DNR until I actually watch the BRs, but I maybe less sensitive to DNR than others.

Guys, I called AnimEigo moments ago. I must say, the individual I spoke to was open, honest and respectful of my viewpoint.

My viewpoint was that the DNR is beyond excessive from what I am seeing in the screen captures and that I was canceling my pre-order.

It was explained to me that the transfers are the original ANALOG transfers created over a decade ago for the DVD releases. They are the only transfer that are available. Most likely, no other transfers exist. The analog HD masters had video noise inherent to that old fashioned type of a technology. DNR was applied to try and reduce that noise and a balance was attempted.

Now I think they made a mistake. I expressed that, but thanked the gentleman for his candor and willingness to hear me out.

We won't see these films released anywhere else. It is what it is.

I'll stick with my DVD's, which are outstanding anyway (especially as they have so little edge enhancement compared to 99% of the DVD's out there).

So discuss. But please just be respectful to AnimEigo. I think they were trying hard to deliver a good product.

I personally think that's complete BS, as there isn't a whiff of DNR on the Shogun Assassin set.

They allegedly had to re-contruct the original Shogun Assassin from scratch and the rest are pretty much just dubbed versions of the existing movies, so clearly, better source materials do exist.

Which makes this release all the more frustrating. The Shogun Assassin set, while not perfect in the A/V department, looks a lot better than those captures. I haven't cancelled my pre-order yet just in case the grabs were captured wrong (Little chance, I know) There's still a few weeks left, so hopefully more reviews will pop up by then.

Assuming the shots are accurate, Animeigo really dropped the ball here.

Shogun Assassin is a lone film, likely transferred from a single print for Blu-Ray. I know it is said they did a "reconstruction" of Shogun Assassin (for DVD) from all of their transfers, but perhaps they were able to afford a new transfer for the Blu-Ray.

No idea.

Just email them and let them know how you feel. Respectfully. Otherwise the email will just be ignored and deleted.

I'm not happy about any of this, believe me. I told him point blank I had cancelled my pre-order.

The Shogun Assassin BD was also billed as a reconstruction, from "our pristine masters of the original two Lone Wolf and Cub films." So either their pristine masters were somehow not available for the Lone Wolf set, or the masters previously described as "pristine" are actually ancient analog masters that they've DNRed for this release. (Would analog masters even be 1080p? The only analog HD system I've heard of that made it past the experimental stage was Hi-Vision/MUSE, and that was 1035i.)

Very disappointing. I'd like to see some direct screen capture comparisons.

Okay, so I got my set today.

My biggest issue isn't the PQ, it the quite frankly awful excuse for audio.

Hollow, tiny and artificial sound. An odd metallic echo to them, or a boxed in feel.

Talk about screwing a release up, AnimEigo.

There's no way in hell I'm keeping this rubbish!
