Should we start kvetching about screencaps and filtering yet? AFAIK there aren't any shots yet, but it's never too early to start. rolleyes.gif

Sadly, I don't have anything in my collection from Shout!Factory. Do they stay pretty true to the source material or do they scrub it clean? ... or are they just a distributor?

If they're producing new extras, they'll be lucky to make the November deadline.

I've had a 1080p version of "They Live" for some time, that I was sure was sourced from a Bluray. Hasn't a version of this Bluray been available in Europe for a while (admittedly not a Collector's Edition)?

How does your "copy" look? I've seen a couple of those out in the wild... It's probably an upscaled, deinterlaced 1080i broadcast.

After about 45 seconds of searching, it would appear that a Blu-ray was produced and review copies were sent out back in 2008. However, the results were horrid and it never was actually sold?

Just tried watching the Italian disc tonight. Says "region B"

I could have SWORN in the other thread for that release there was a trick with the remote that got it to play on a Region A player. Can't find the thread now

Anyone? Thanks

http://www.dvdactive.com/reviews/dvd/they-live2.html

It was identified as an Italian Bluray source with DTS-HD MA 2.0 from around late 2010.

I found the quality acceptable for its age, especially since this was the only way to see the movie in 1080p, but then I don't have any other version to compare it to: I just wanted to see the movie in HD.

IMO, there is a hunger out there in consumer land to watch favourite movies that take advantage of HDTV and the studios do themselves no favours in dragging their feet and witholding access: why are they so surprised that the consumer finds a way to watch the material?

I enjoyed They Live so much in my "preview" that I will definitely be considering buying the official Special Edition release, assuming it is a quality product.

You may be thinking of Return of the Living Dead. You can push the top menu bottom when the wrong region message is displayed and that will take you to the main menu.
Don't remember that being the case with They Live. I could be wrong. Try it and let us know if it works.

Yes, they do. Just like Criterion. Pretty sure one of their producers has given the "we only have the license for North America" excuse on their forums, even though it obviously doesn't apply to other small studios who don't lock everything.

A couple of comments from John Carpenter in this new interview on aintitcool: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/57456
Quote:
Capone: They have a nice new digital print of it (The Thing) to play on the first night of the convention. But before I dive into that, I just heard yesterday that THEY LIVE is finally coming out on Blu-ray in November?

JC: Yep.

Capone: Have you done anything new for that release?

JC: Yeah, I did a little on-camera stuff, but it’s not very extensive. I think everybody did something.

Capone: All of the people in the film?

JC: I think so. I’m not really sure, but yeah.

Capone: Okay, but we actually can say there is new material on the Blu-ray.

JC: Yeah, there’s new stuff. It’s no ****ing good, but it’s new.

[Both Laugh]

Capone: At the end of the day, maybe there’s no difference. Did they do anything in terms of restoring it at all?

JC: Dude, you’re asking me a question I have no answer for. So it’s high def now, okay. I don’t know what else they have done.

Capone: I just took a shot in the dark that you might know.

JC: Hey, that’s okay. You would think the director might know, but no. [Laughs]

Capone: I have a feeling a lot of my questions are going to be shots in the dark here.

JC: Hey, go ahead. No problem.

Capone: Whenever I talk to George Romero, I always love digging into the social messages of his films. I don’t think he would make a film unless he could insert a message or two about what was pissing him off at the time. When you were making some of your earlier work, did you attempt to pepper into your films an expression of what you saw as society’s ills or other things that were on your mind?

JC: Not quite as much as George. He really worked that. I was a little bit less than that. I mean, THEY LIVE is an obvious example of something that I considered society’s ill. I was angry about the Reagan Revolution, so it was a scream in the dark, but not so much some of the early ones. They were pretty much straight-forward, take the drama as it is, take the story as it is.

Carpenter seems a little cranky in that interview. Perhaps one too many Gimlets at the bar the previous night.

What I take away from it is that he knows no more about the transfer than we do. My guess that it's most likely an existing transfer

He's like that in other interviews too. I think he gets annoyed about the constant fannish questions about his work. Once he's finished with a film, I don't think he likes to go back to revisit it ad nauseum.
