Watched this one tonight. There's a lot wrong with this movie from the ground up - nonsensical plot, mediocre acting from just about everyone involved, most of which look like they're waiting for their paycheck to clear so they can bail out on the production, cribbed ideas from other similar flicks and of course, the whole awkwardly shoehorned "Battleship" game thing into some sort of plot gimmick for the movie to justify the franchise it's representing.
What holds this flick together and in fact makes for one of the very best looking and sounding Blu-ray releases of 2012 at least on a technical level is the fetishistic (did I just make up a word?) level of special effects that focus on cool super detailed space gizmos chomping up and blowing up naval ships and cities. It's like there was so much thought and craft involved in making the hardware look good with beautifully composed and executed shots, it reveals how stupid and lazily conceived the (space) hardware actually is. I mean, you have the main alien battleships leap frogging across the ocean like handicapped dolphins. And the aliens themselves are basically unimaginative rip-offs of the Halo game fighters. While it really seem like Michael Bay light, It's very much like the Transformer movies - the Blu-ray presentation looks and sounds fabulous but the actual movie could quite possibly subliminally kill braincells.
