The last Hunger Games was lossy DD.

I rented it and remember distinctly being disappointed. Soundtrack was still good, but not quite....there, if you know what I mean.

Any confirmation of an Atmos track on Redbox release?

None of the Lionsgate big blockbuster rentals are lossless.

Mike,

This looks like a RB rental, correct?
How did it sound?

Is there (still) any hope that NF would be lossless?

Just for the record, my neighbor rented "Mockingjay" BD at the local Family Video and it was lossy DD 5.1 .. it's the first I've heard of a B&M getting a stripped version of a film .. he paid $3.75 for the rental ..

NetFlix RedBox BD's Without DTS-HD Master Audio / DD 5.1 Instead

Axel, how you been!
Was looking fwd to seeing you at the March HEMI gtg but seems that fell thru, maybe May at Jeff's?

As you know I'm running NeoX 100%, so it was up converted to 11.2, sure the sound was "good", but how can I say if some LFE passage was less, or without the rears via the 7.1 lossless mix some 3D effect was less....

After watching the movie I give it a solid B overall, but not enough that id buy it....

Mgk- that sucks a B&M is charging that for bluray lossy version.
Not world peace, just a sign of cheapness on lionsgate...

Same here.

I have not quite given up - it's still early in March.
On the other hand the track record for this meet has not been that great.

ALso depends on the soundbar. My secondary setup has a soundbar that decodes the advanced audio codecs. You can still hear the difference between the Lossless audio versions and the lossy audio versions.

I believe the last info I saw was NF was down to about 6 million disk subscribers, most of which, are, of course, going for new release material in their Q and most of which take the DVD plan .. so let's just say, for comparison sake, NF buys 500,000 BD's of a new release from Lions Gate, and saves a buck per disk because they take bulk spindle packaging and downgrade audio .. that's half a million in savings ..

Lions Gate allows them to release the same day as retail .. there is an additional monetary benefit to that as well ..
I would think the average renter is more concerned about being able to rent it on the same day the title is released than the type of encoding used for the audio. Your average renter has no clue about it.

Warning to everyone. Walmart exclusive blu-ray version of Mockingjay that is available for purchase is lossy dd 5.1 only. I didn't notice until unwrapping the disk and redeeming the voodoo code, wish I could light it on fire and shoot it back into the Walmart from which it came!

John Wick's lossy DD 5.1 mix wasn't terrible for DD, but I did feel like it was missing something...the movie was good enough that I'm definitely putting it on my list for purchase.

My FV has had "Rental" versions for months, if not longer. I don't know how prevalent it is, I don't rent much besides games and 3D Blu-rays there much.

I don't know if by "stripped" you mean movie-only, lossy audio, or both. That's why I posted in a thread where somebody said they got actual retail versions at Hastings that they might not expect that to last forever.

When I was a regular at Family Video, some years ago, they had Rental Only disks .. I just don't ever recall BD's that had downgrade audio .. most all were movie-only, which has been pretty common for a while now, yet still had the lossless audio .. my comment on "Mockingjay" was regarding downgrade audio at DD 5.1 .. Family Video had the retail boxes on display, which would lead one to believe it would be the full BD version .. I just felt it was odd that a B&M was in the same boat as NF and RB ..

I guess they bought their copies at Walmart ..

I found this thread a bit late. I had contacted Redbox about this issue just last weekend after renting John Wick and seeing that the retail version had lossless tracks while the rental did not. Their response placed the blame on the studio and confirmed that they do not inform customers of the audio track information on their website or at the rental station. They promised that they "...have gathered your thoughts and feedback about the audio quality and forwarded this up to have this looked into."

Maybe someday they'll understand that their value as a provider lies in the quality of the material presented, and if that's not there then I don't have as much reason to go to a grocery store to get a movie.

You'd be better served by contacting the Studio .. although NF may be the provider, they are simply abiding by Studio demands ..

I agree most renters are probably listening to the movie thru the flat panel speakers or sound bars. I have a dedicated ht with an 11.2 set up and only rent since I rarely ever watch a movie twice, but I can hear the sound quality improvement on my system of lossless vs dd. Before I knew NF was getting only DD from LG, I was rather disappointed in expendables only being in DD, I thought my oppo 103 or denon 4520 was malfunctioning, not so as I later discovered about this rental disc issue. I believe that 3D Bluray Rental rents the discs with the lossless tracks, so I'll be renting all future LG productions from them instead of NF.

I don't think we will ever know for sure, but I would think paying extra every month for Blu-ray reduces the percentage of people watching on a setup that is less than optimal. Aren't these the same people that want everything for free and wouldn't pay the extra money every month?

DVD still outsells BD .. I don't know if it's a matter of "I want it for free" as much as it is "DVD is plenty good enough for me" .. and most people, given the option, Free or Pay, will choose Free ..

Are there any places that one can rent a LG disc with lossless audio without paying a monthly subscription? I checked out 3D BluRay Rentals but the cheapest plan is $15.99. Since I only watch a small number of LG movies from Netflix containing lossy audio, it does not seem to make sense to pay for a full month at another rental company. And my family will not let me switch out of Netflix because some of them stream shows on their bedroom TV's. Too bad all my local video stores have gone bust, so I have to depend upon options like Netflix and 3D BluRay Rentals for renting movies.

I have a fairly good blu ray player and AVR so I do appreciate the better audio that can be available. I , also, have a pretty good bd player/burner in my computer i can play or stream to where ever i like and use my AVR to pass through better (lossless) audio or use the few options that the Dolby IIz , or DTX Neo6/DSX , etc for 2 channel surround expansion.
I use a 7.1 with the height but mess around with a wide with or with out rear instead of side channels. I have not really found good channel re mapping through the computer to get the height channels to function properly all the time
So, I do appreciate the lossless 7.1 when it is available but it isnt always , though that is probably due to my niche target favorites. I am sure there are many more great audio blu ray movies i just would not be interested in.
I have not gotten any red box movies in a very long time and put my Netflix subscription on hold, for 10months now. I had discontinued my 4 at a time DVD through the mail rental over the course of 2yrs scaling back to finally only one at a time last year and then moved only to on line. the quality of disks i got had deteriorated, even before considering the reduced audio tracks. I got more and more broken blu rays and damaged ones, Netflix as a company was fine and prompt in fixing what they could but I gave it up and did not suffer any of the expected withdrawal i planned for.
I may go back, I no longer have any children to deal with so the number of titles I am interested in has gone down. I keep getting the free first month invitation every month in the email....to come back. I may check out the depth of the current library but toyed with Acorn at half the cost or WB archive if it is still called that but those costs were even higher. then these audio controversies would become moot.
I still watch this thread now and then, so
thanks to those who take the time to post

Too bad all my local video stores have gone bust, so I have to depend upon options like Netflix and 3D BluRay Rentals for renting movies.
The only Lionsgate lossy BD's are the big blockbusters like Hunger Games and The Expendables. These titles are so few and far between it's not an issue for me. IMO, you're probably better off just sticking with Netflix.
