Obviously this is little consolation to those have the problem but I wanted to report it just the same. Sorry guys..
Regards,

Ralph,

I didn't experience any audio dropouts on my BDP-103 (bitstreming) unless they were so brief I didn't notice. I haven't tried it on my Sony BDP-S790 yet.

my 103 in bitstream gave me 3-4 dropouts, as well as loss of audio sync (correctable with quick rewind).

Vincent,

Was this theatrical or extended version? Also, do you have the time stamp?

I like both of those movies. The flares in 2009 Trek only bothered me a couple of times and they never bothered me once in Super 8. That clip for 2012 Total Recall was, for me, unwatchable.

There was alot of stupid lens flair flare in Total Recall.
None of it made any sense at all.

Unfortunately, Wiseman has developed a case of ALFS (Abrams Lens Flare Syndrome).

Nobody else commented on the different video encode issue so for, but after getting a hold of more versions and performing a careful analysis, here's an update on a previous post of mine:

The UK/Irish/French/Dutch/Norwegian, the Czech/Polish/Hungarian/Turkish/Portuguese and the Brazilian/South America release have the video encoded at 13994kbps (DC) 14005kbps (TC) while the Russian/Chinese/Korean/Thai/Indonesia edition features the video at 19777kbps (DC) and 19404 kbps(TC). The main audio bitrate and movie lengh are the same across all these releases.

Strangely enough, the branching segments are also different on the higher bitrate release (starting and finishing at different points), but I haven't noticed any differences on the content of the movie itself. I checked most of these different branching segments, specially the ones that could have been edited due to a more graphic nature (ie, sex or violence).

Regarding the PQ difference, I spot checked and made screencap comparisons and it's minimal, but compression is certainly improved, specially on fast motion scenes, for the higher bitrate version.

The only versions that are still unaccounted for are the US/North America release and the Japanese/German/Turkish, but i'm working on that. If anybody has any info on those, I'd appreciate it very much.

So I rented this bluray from Redbox, watched the first half on a fat PS3 to a Pioneer 01 receiver. Watched the second half on a PS3 slim, bitstreaming to a Pioneer 03 receiver. Dropouts with the slim of course, and loss of a/v sync. Pausing/unpausing would not fix this issue, so I had to endure the last parts with the lip sync issue. Just posting this for info's sake.

I've seen people blame DD TrueHD, but I'm watching Ghost Protocol now and it has no audio dropouts or loss of a/v sync. And I'm sure I've watched other TrueHD soundtracks through bitsteaming and never had an issue. Other recent movies seem to also suffer this problem, so the question has to be....what has changed recently? Or is it just a case of the 5.1 soundtrack being somehow at the root of this?

I wonder if that 'audio watermark' rubbish may have been used and is causing issues? As I recall it seemed that there have been more audio issues with bitstreamed DTSMA rather than DTHD; however it may have more to do with copy protection causing hiccups than technical issues in the audio streams themselves. Would be nice to know for certain though.

There does seem to be an increase of people having issues with discs recently. Personally have not had any issues but that is likely due to my player is set to do the decoding and pass it as PCM to my receiver.

Best Regards

We'll see if he can get a response from Sony.

Your only audio option for a fat 80gig PS3 is pcm, no bitstream for multi-channel.
And mine had no issues at all decoding any of the new BD's audio tracks
(sending pcm to my Yamaha RX-V3900 via HDMI)

Just wanted to chime in and say that I also had audio dropout/sync issues near the end of the film. I rented the Redbox version which appeared to be a retail (non-"Rental") disc with TrueHD. I flipped around between AC-3 and TrueHD, but it didn't seem to make too much of a difference.

Panasonic TC-P55ST30
Denon AVR-2112CI (latest firmware as of last week)
Oppo BDP-103 (latest firmware) - configured for bitstream

I had many many audio dropouts on my rental disc from Blockbuster. Never had this problem with any other disc. Have a Sony 580 Blu-ray player and Yamaha 663 receiver.
This just made a bad movie (IMO) even worse.

Never signs up for anything

I had audio dropouts on the rental disc from RedBox... also, when the sound came back it was always out of sync too. I little rewind and it would resync however.

I, too, had many audio dropouts on Total Recall 2012 when bitstreaming the TrueHD audio from my HTPC. After 5 minutes, I switched to PCM output (software decoded from the TrueHD), and everything was fine. I know that both DTS-HDMA and Dolby TrueHD are both lossless codecs, but with compatibility problems like this, is this a reason to prefer DTS-HDMA over Dolby TrueHD?

Bazinga!

I have this coming from Netflix today. Sounds like I should just set my Oppo 93 to PCM and not risk bitstreaming it?

I also rented this from Redbox and notice that the audio was drifting out of sync over about 20-30 minutes on my Sony BDP-480. Quickly cycling through the audio streams would correct it.

Finally, we’ve learned from industry sources that the audio issue on Sony’s Total Recall Blu-ray is likely a problem with the discs. We’re waiting to hear back from the studio on the matter directly and will let you know when we do.

I hope that if there is a Recall.....that it will make it into Canada.

Drop outs are outrageous on this disc.
