I know, I know...it's impossible to narrow it down to just 5. But I did, and so can you! Here we go, in order:

1. BladeRunner

2. Children of Men

3. Aliens

4. Terminator 2

5. Dark City

1 Terminator 2
2 Terminator 2
3 Terminator 2
4 Terminator 2
5 Inception

Seriously, T2 has aged really really well. Look at other sci fi movies from the early 90's, they mostly look really dated. T2's cold colour pallette, Camera angles, well lit night shots etc have resulted in a movie that could be aired today and look modern. Also, T2 represents a movie making era where directors and producers did the hard work in live action scenes. Thats a real helicopter flying under the overpass. Thats a real harley with a real rider jumping down into the L.A. Riverbed.

Today it seems like anything that would be tough or take awhile to plan is just done in CG.

There are so many good ones out there, and only a top 5 list?

Planet of the Apes (1968)
2001 A Space Odyssey
Alien
Gattaca
Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan

And a huge number of honorable mentions. Obviously these don't have the eye and ear candy of more recent releases, but their stories are fabulous and have stood the test of time. Now that I'm looking at my list, maybe I have too much of a fascination with life, DNA, and evolution.

The Matrix
Star Trek (2009)

Terminator 2
Star Wars

Side note about Khan:

I like Khan but if you think about it there are so many things that make no sense in it I cannot watch it anymore. Why did they not KNOW which planet they were on when they bumped into Khan? They had computers to keep track of things and I would think that if something exploded in that part of space that somebody would have noticed it. Also with Khan being such a threat it would seem that at the least Chekov & Star Fleet would have remembered where Kirk had dropped Khan off and it wouldn't have been such a surprise. Why did they not just beam up from inside the containers, you do not have to go outside to beam up...also, when you do go outside and see those figures why would you not beam up then? Why did the earwigs make the captain and Chekov only take orders from Khan? They should have been susceptible to suggestions from anyone, which means they would not just turn "bad" and do Khan's bidding.

Is The Abyss out on Blu yet?

I'm gonna cheat and list multiple movies as one listing where applicable.

1) Blade Runner
2) Star Wars ( all 6 movies )
3) The Matrix Trilogy
4) Tron/Tron Legacy
5) Alien Anthology ( 4 movies )

HD-DVD = 94
Blu-Ray = 120 ( 24 Warner red2blu )

The Day The Earth Stood Still (original)
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
2001: A Space Odyssey
Blade Runner
Akira

If the original "War Of The Worlds" was available on Blu-ray, I'd be tempted to bump Akira for it.

Even though I had Khan in my list, yes, there are some stupid things about it as you pointed out. And Chekov never met Khan because Space Seed was in season 1 of TOS, and Chekov arrived in season 2.
But I still love it because of its history in eugenics, and the genesis device being able to rearrange matter into new life, and it is a good kick-ass revenge story all wrapped up into Trek.

Yeah, Back to the Future is one that I forget about when it comes to sci-fi... in that case, I would have that on my list for sure.

My only complaint with WoK is the very ending. Two seconds would have made all the difference.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Khan should have died KNOWING that Kirk got away. As it stands, he died thinking he beat Kirk with the Genesis explosion. It should have gone like this: "I spit my last breath at thee..." and then he sees Enterprise warp away and dies with an expression of rage/disbelief. I would have been more satisfied with that ending.

Almost my entire collection is Sci-Fiction and Sci-Fantasy. I can't possibly narrow down the list. Rather, I won't. wink.gif
